    Description / Table of Contents: A new map of standardized, mesoscale (tens to thousands of hectares) terrestrial ecosystems for the conterminous United States was developed by using a biophysical stratification approach. The ecosystems delineated in this top-down, deductive modeling effort are described in NatureServe's classification of terrestrial ecological systems of the United States. The ecosystems were mapped as physically distinct areas and were associated with known distributions of vegetation assemblages by using a standardized methodology first developed for South America. This approach follows the geoecosystems concept of R.J. Huggett and the ecosystem geography approach of R.G. Bailey.Unique physical environments were delineated through a geospatial combination of national data layers for biogeography, bioclimate, surficial materials lithology, land surface forms, and topographic moisture potential. Combining these layers resulted in a comprehensive biophysical stratification of the conterminous United States, which produced 13,482 unique biophysical areas. These were considered as fundamental units of ecosystem structure and were aggregated into 419 potential terrestrial ecosystems.

    Notes: It is generally considered that exfoliation corrosion is due to the build-up of corrosion products thatcreate a wedging stress that lifts up the surface grains. However, the exfoliation mechanism is stillunder discussion: possible operating mechanisms include intergranular corrosion of in plane grainboundaries accelerated by the wedging effect, or crack propagation by a “purely” stress corrosionmechanism. The sensitivity to exfoliation corrosion of AA7449 in relation to the intergranular andstress corrosion cracking sensitivity has been addressed in a program of controlled quenchesfollowed by thermal treatments. Our observations demonstrate that the quench rate has a strongeffect on intergranular corrosion and exfoliation corrosion sensitivity and in a lesser extent on stresscorrosion cracking. In the first moments of the EXCO test, the initiation of corrosion follows thesame trends as those revealed by the ASTM G110 test. We observe intergranular initiation for theslow quench rate (~5°C/s) and pitting initiation for samples quenched between 50 to 500°C/s.On the contrary, the final EXCO corrosion quotations do not seem to correlate with theintergranular resistance but rather with SCC resistance

    Notes: RRA treatment was applied to a high-Zn, 7XXX alloy under development for aerospaceapplications. Microstructure of the alloy is studied at different stages of the 3-step ageing process,by Transmission Electron Microscopy, in order to understand the corresponding evolution ofmechanical and corrosion properties. The Compression Yield Strength at the end of the hightemperature step was found higher than at the end of the 1st step, contrary to the conventional RRAtreatment. After re-ageing, the final CYS turned out significantly higher than at the T6 temper of thealloy, while the material remained sensitive to exfoliation corrosion

    Notes: Two principal approaches are available to materials’ engineers to improve the overallcost-weight balance of metallic airframe structures: improving alloy performance and optimisingmaterials’ utilisation. Although both approaches have been successful in the past, they are mosteffective when applied concomitantly. The Aluminium industry has a long record of improvingaerospace alloys’ performance. Nevertheless, even in apparently well-explored alloy systems suchas the 7xxx family, products with improved damage tolerance-strength balances have recently beendeveloped, thanks to an improved understanding of the optimum Zn-Mg-Cu combinations for therequired property balances but also to developments in casting capability. Novel dispersoids anddispersoid combinations have enabled further improvements of the performance of existing alloyfamilies. For example, appropriate Sc and Zr additions have a significant impact on the grainstructure of 2xxx alloys and thus on performance. Another high potential approach for alloyperformance improvements is the optimisation of Al-Cu-Li-(Mg-Ag-Zn) alloys. These so-called“third generation Al-Li alloys” were principally developed for military and space applications; inorder to meet the demands of future commercial airframes, more damage tolerant variants are beingdeveloped. AA2198 and AA2050 are used to illustrate the potential of these higher damagetolerance Al-Cu-Li alloys. However, materials performance improvements are only part of thepotential developments of metallic solutions for airframes. Further gains of a similar magnitude incomponent weight and cost can be achieved by applying new technologies and new designsolutions to metallic structures. The future of metallic airframes will depend on the concomitantapplication of both these approaches

    Notes: The human pathogenic fungus Candida albicans, which can reside as a benign commensal of the gut, possesses a large family of lipase encoding genes whose extracellular activity may be important for colonization and subsequent infection. The expression of the C. albicans lipase gene family (LIP1–10) was investigated using a mouse model of mucosal candidiasis during alimentary tract colonization (cecum contents) and orogastric infection. LIPs4–8 were expressed in nearly every sample prepared from the cecum contents and infected mucosal tissues (stomach, hard palate, esophagus and tongue) suggesting a maintenance function for these gene products. In contrast, LIPs1, 3, and 9, which were detected consistently in infected gastric tissues, were essentially undetectable in infected oral tissues. In addition, LIP2 was expressed consistently in cecum contents but was undetectable in infected oral tissues suggesting LIP2 may be important for alimentary tract colonization, but not oral infection. The host responded to a C. albicans infection by significantly increasing expression of the chemokines MIP-2 and KC at the site of infection. Therefore, differential LIP gene expression was observed during colonization, infection and at different infected mucosal sites.

    Notes: Purpose - This paper examines the challenges facing China's employment relations after its WTO accession and consequently, the implications for further reform. Design/methodology/approach - Theoretical questions are considered in relation to the debate on globalization vs the nation-state over political, economic and social issues. By examining the challenges from both internal and external sources, the paper investigates the impact on the employment relations system at both macro- and micro-levels. Findings - The major finding of this paper is that the current system of employment relations system in China is in the process of transformation towards a "hybrid" model combining authoritarianism and neo-corporatism. Originality/value - This paper provides the most recent analysis on the impact of WTO accession on the changing pattern of employment relations in China. It helps people who are interested in transitional economy in general and in China in particular to have a better understanding about the transformation of employment relations system under the influence of different forces.

    Notes: : Controlling agricultural nonpoint source pollution from livestock grazing is a necessary step to improving the water quality of the nation's streams. The goal of enhanced stream water quality will most likely result from the implementation of an integrated system of best management practices (BMPs) linked with stream hydraulic and geomorphic characteristics. However, a grazing BMP system is often developed with the concept that BMPs will function independently from interactions among controls, climatic regions, and the multifaceted functions exhibited by streams. This paper examines the peer reviewed literature pertaining to grazing BMPs commonly implemented in the southern humid region of the United States to ascertain effects of BMPs on stream water quality. Results indicate that the most extensive BMP research efforts occurred in the western and midwestern U.S. While numerous studies documented the negative impacts of grazing on stream health, few actually examined the success of BMPs for mitigating these effects. Even fewer studies provided the necessary information to enable the reader to determine the efficacy of a comprehensive systems approach integrating multiple BMPs with pre-BMP and post-BMP geomorphic conditions. Perhaps grazing BMP research should begin incorporating geomorphic information about the streams with the goal of achieving sustainable stream water quality.

    Notes: Aminobacter lissarensis CC495 is an aerobic facultative methylotroph capable of growth on glucose, glycerol, pyruvate and methylamine as well as the methyl halides methyl chloride and methyl bromide. Previously, cells grown on methyl chloride have been shown to express two polypeptides with apparent molecular masses of 67 and 29 kDa. The 67 kDa protein was purified and identified as a halomethane:bisulfide/halide ion methyltransferase. This study describes a single gene cluster in A. lissarensis CC495 containing the methyl halide utilisation genes cmuB, cmuA, cmuC, orf 188, paaE and hutI. The genes correspond to the same order and have a high similarity to a gene cluster found in Aminobacter ciceronei IMB-1 and Hyphomicrobium chloromethanicum strain CM2 indicating that genes encoding methyl halide degradation are highly conserved in these strains.
