Notes: Abstract:  Is earnings management affecting (driving) the measures of earnings conservatism?Ball et al. (2000) point out that the asymmetry in the recognition of good and bad news in earnings (faster recognition of bad news: earnings conservatism) is more pronounced in common-law than in code-law based accounting regimes. However, comparative studies on earnings conservatism in Europe have failed to identify significant differences between common-law and code-law based countries. We argue that in code-law based countries managers have incentives to reduce earnings consistently. This enhances the association between earnings and returns in bad news periods. We find that after controlling for discretionary accruals, the differential earnings response to bad news in Germany and France decreases significantly.

Notes: We studied the cytological and biochemical properties of the FtsA protein of Streptococcus pneumoniae. FtsA is a widespread bacterial cell division protein that belongs to the actin superfamily. In Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis, FtsA localizes to the septal ring after FtsZ, but its exact role in septation is not known. In S. pneumoniae, we found that, during exponential growth, the protein localizes to the nascent septa, at the equatorial zones of the dividing cells, where an average of 2200 FtsA molecules per cell are present. Likewise, FtsZ was found to localize with the same pattern and to be present at an average of 3000 molecules per cell. Consistent with the colocalization, FtsA was found to interact with FtsZ and with itself. Purified FtsA is able to bind several nucleotides, the affinity being highest for adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and lower for other triphosphates and diphosphates. The protein polymerizes in vitro, in a nucleotide-dependent manner, forming long corkscrew-like helixes, composed of 2 + 2 paired protofilaments. No nucleotide hydrolytic activity was detected. Consistent with the absence of an ATPase activity, the polymers are highly stable and not dynamic. These results suggest that the FtsA protein could also polymerize in vivo and the polymers participate in septation.

Notes: The continuous need for change in corporate real estate spaces warrants consideration of flexibilityin new space design. To help decision makers invest more effectively in physical infrastructure and its ability to evolve, a formal method of identifying and valuing flexibility is developed. A model, based on real options techniques for valuing managerial flexibility, is constructed to answer the following question: how much is it worth to invest in a space that could be renovated to office space for a specified renovation cost in the future? Decision makers can use the option valuation results to determine whether the initial design and construction costs to achieve flexibility are justifiable. The transparent model is intended to be accessible to design teams in practice. It is an improvement on net present value and first-cost based decision-making techniques in that it explicitly accounts for uncertainty and for the ability of managers to make a rational future decision (between renting and renovating). The model considers three sources of uncertainty: the market price of rent for office space (as measured by volatility); date of space need; and amount of space need. Input values and/or probability distributions are needed for these variables. The model is constructed using a binomial lattice technique and Monte Carlo simulation. Results are given in a format that allows for comparison with cost estimates of physical architectural designs. For example, in a case study where current five-year office-space leases are estimated at US$98 per square foot and 0.39 annual volatility and the mean amount of space needed in the future is 50 per cent of the total, the real options valuation suggests that it is worth up to US$40 per square foot in initial investment expenses to achieve a space that could be renovated to office space for US$25 per square foot within the next eight years. The concept of addressing risk through 'flexible design' and analysing the value of flexibility is pertinent to judicious management of any new building project that is subject to uncertain future conditions.

Notes: Purpose - The aim of this research is two-fold: to examine the effects of certain characteristics of top management teams (TMTs) on innovative performance in their companies; and to determine if this influence is direct or if it is influenced by other factors, such as the existence of strategic consensus in the team. Design/methodology/approach - The research is developed using Upper Echelon Theory. This study was conducted with a sample of 100 companies from innovative sectors. Different regression analysis were undertaken in order to test the established hypotheses. Findings - Three main conclusions can be drawn from this research. First, it cannot be stated that all types of diversity related to TMT activity or work have a positive effect on innovation in companies. In this way, diversity in TMT tenure appears to have a negative influence. Second, the incidence of diversity on innovation cannot be direct in all cases. Therefore, functional diversity has a positive effect on innovation, but always when there is a context of strategic consensus in the management team. Finally, TMT educational level exerts a positive effect on organizational innovation degree, independently on processes, which may occur within the team. Originality/value - The paper has tried to improve and clarify the contributions about the direct relationship model proposed by Upper Echelon Theory between TMT demographic characteristics and innovation. The results have confirmed, in support of the critics of the theory that it is necessary to introduce and analyze, along with demographic variables, other factors and processes which affect TMT decision making.

Notes: Recent culture-independent studies based on small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene analysis revealed the existence of completely new clades of protists. The main problems with this approach are to correlate sequences from environmental rRNA genes with the organisms they belong to and then to detect the ecological role of these organisms in the environment. In order to overcome such problems we chose an alternative approach allowing us both a molecular characterization of uncultivable organisms with a low relative abundance in environmental samples, and a morphological analysis, even if restricted. The experimental protocol consists of two steps: an initial observation and photo-taking of the single cell under the DIC (Differential Interferential Contrast) microscope and then PCR amplification and direct sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene of the same cell. The advantages of this method are the possibility to: (1) establish a precise link between morphology and gene sequence; (2) detect the possible occurrence of highly similar species within the studied population; (3) avoid the insertion of Taq-polymerase errors in the gene sequence; and (4) detect possible polymorphisms in the gene under examination. Such an approach was used to sequence the 18S rRNA gene of organisms belonging to the class Karyorelictea that comprises several uncultivable ciliates with limited distinctive features. Gene sequences analysis revealed an unexpected genetic variability in trachelocercids and, in particular, the existence of polymorphisms in the SSU rRNA gene of a group of them. Such specimens show a similar morphology and, as a result of phylogenetic analysis, they form a constant clade.

Notes: Recently, the use of invertebrate models of infection has given exciting insights into host–pathogen interaction for a number of bacteria. In particular, this has revealed important factors of the host response with remarkable parallels in higher organisms. Here, we review the advances attained in the elucidation of virulence determinants of a major human pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus, in relation to the invertebrate models thus far applied, the silkworm (Bombyx mori), the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) and the roundworm (Caenorhabditis elegans). Also, the major pathways of host defence are covered in light of the response to S. aureus and the similarities and divergences in innate immunity of vertebrates and invertebrates. Consequently, we comparatively consider pathogen recognition receptors, signal transduction pathways (including Toll, Imd and others), and the humoral and cellular antimicrobial effectors. The technically convenient and ethically acceptable invertebrates appear as a valuable first tool to discriminate molecules participating from both sides of the host–S. aureus interaction as well as a high throughput method for antimicrobial screening.

Notes: Blocking peptidoglycan synthesis in Escherichia coli with moenomycin or vancomycin led to the accumulation of UDP-MurNAc-pentapeptide and of its immediate upstream precursors, whereas with cephaloridine or penicillin G the pool of UDP-MurNAc-pentapeptide decreased. With MraY and FtsW deficiencies the decrease of UDP-MurNAc-pentapeptide was accompanied by an increase of the upstream nucleotide precursors and the appearance of UDP-MurNAc-tetrapeptide.
