Notes: Well-crystallized nanopolycrystalline thin films of cubic strontium titanate, SrTiO3, havebeen prepared on the TiNi-deposited Ni substrate in Sr(OH)2 aqueous solutions at temperaturesbetween 130 and 200°C under saturated vapor pressures. The microstructure and morphology of thefilms were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thephotoelectrochemical properties of SrTiO3 thin films on TiNi-deposited Ni substrate wereinvestigated on a three-electrode assembly. The grain sizes increased from 30 nm to 300 nm and therelative crystal intensity in XRD pattern increased with the reaction temperature. Its photocurrentincreasesdfirst with the grain size, then decreased. When the grain size of the film is about 200 nm,the photocurrent is highest

Notes: Fracture surface and surface of two kind of membrane of antibacterial bone china, whichincludes 3% and 5% of weight of composite phosphate containing rare earth respectively, werecharacterized by SEM and nanoindenter, respectively. Nanohardness and nanoscale frictioncoefficients were measured by nanoindenter. Friction coefficients were conducted at the maximalload being 300un,500un,1000un and scratching speed 15um/s, 0.75um/s, 0.5um/s, respectively. Thenanohardness and friction coefficients of ceramic membrane including 3% and 5% of rare earths are2.03GPa,0.18282 and 8.54GPa,0.051998, respectively. The two kind of ceramic membrane hasstable nanotribology property. Obvious plastic flow and pile-up scratch impression of ceramicmembrane including 3% rare earths is observed by AFM in situ imaging, but scratch impression of5% has no plastic flow and take on the sink-in topography. Nanohardness and friction coefficientsof this two kind of ceramic membrane have strong relationships each other but weak relations withelastic modulus

Notes: A feeding table system is set up to meet the need for high motional precision andsuper-slow speed in micro-electron discharge machining (micro-EDM). It is composed of a resonantpiezoelectric ceramics motor, a linear bearing and a linear encoder . It features high accuracy due tothe application of linear driving, closed-1oop feedback and elimination of abbe’s errors. Thecharacteristics of fine motion , slow speed and load capability are investigated. The results of theexperiments show that the stable fine motion of this system can be as little as 100 nanometer and itsspeed can be as slow as 0.5 micron per second which is proper for feeding table of micro-EDM

Notes: We present a prototype of thermal interface material (TIM) by incorporating aligned carbonnanotube arrays (CNA) into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The morphology of CNA wasmaintained by adopting in-situ injection molding method, and the nanotube-polymer composite filmwas obtained by curing the PDMS at room temperature. We applied steady-state methods to measurethe thermal conductivity of this kind of nanocomposite. Comparing to the pure PDMS, the thermalconductivity of the composite was greatly increased, which can be attributed to the thermalconducting passages formed by vertical aligned carbon nanotubes from one side of the film to theother. We also managed to improve the thermal conducting performance of the composite byevaporating a 1-μm-thick aluminum film on the top of a raw CNA, which serves as a heat currentcollector to decrease the thermal contact resistance. The experiment results suggest these kinds ofcomposites have broad application prospect for thermal management in the future

Notes: We have systemically studied the effect of the erbium on the microstructure and themechanical properties in the 5xxx series aluminum alloys by using optical microscope, transmissionelectron microscope (TEM) and by tensile testing. The results demonstrate that the tensile strengthincreased quickly at the beginning of small contents of 0.1%Er both in the hot and cold rolled states, then slowly increased with increasing the contents of Er until 0.4%, at which the best balance of thestrength and ductility (438MPa and 9.6%) were obtained. Microstructure observation in the hot rolledstate was indicated that the grain structure in the Er free Al-5Mg alloy revealed fully recrystallizedgrain structure, while in the Al-5Mg containing Er was demonstrated deformation structure, indicating the Er addition delayed the recrystallization behavior by the formation of the precipitationof the Al3Er, which confirmed by means of the X-ray diffraction analysis. Furthermore in the TEMmicrostructure observation the precipitation of Al3Er was distributed both in the grain interior andsubgrain or grain boundaries, which could be pinning the subgrain or grain boundary migration anddislocation movement as well. Consequently the beginning of the recrystallization temperature in theAl-5Mg containing Er was elevated about 50ºC than in Al-5Mg without Er. This could be explainedthat the strength increased without the deterioration of the ductility was attributed to themicrostructure refinement by the Er addition

Notes: The carbon-coated Fe(C), Co(C) and Ni(C) nanocapsules were prepared by a modifiedarc-discharge method in methane atmosphere. The nanocapsule powder, 50 % by weight, was mixeduniformly with paraffin wax to form measurement samples. Their electromagnetic (EM) wavereflection loss of the composite samples was calculated using the relative complex permeability andpermittivity measured in microwave frequency range of 2-18 GHz. It is indicated that Fe(C), Co(C)and Ni(C) nanocapsules show the broadband characteristics with strong absorption from 2 to 18 GHzfor a coating thickness of about 2-3 mm. The excellent EM wave absorption properties are mainlyattributed to the proper electromagnetic match in microstructure, strong natural resonance as well asmulti-polarization mechanisms, etc. As an inspiration, we found this kind of nanocapsules with adielectric shell and a ferromagnetic core are very promising for new EM wave absorption materials

Notes: Two chemokine (C-X3-C) receptor 1 (CX3CR1) gene polymorphisms, V249I and T280M, and 10 CC chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) promoter haplotypes, P1–P10, have recently been reported to influence the progression of acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (AIDS). As these studies were performed mainly with Caucasian and African-American subjects, we determined the distribution of these alleles in Chinese people for the purpose of predicting possible clinical responses to the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV) epidemics in countries with significant Chinese populations, as well as to establish their effects on the expression of surface CCR5. Ninety-six HIV-negative Chinese individuals in Taiwan were subjected to genotyping, and we thus determined that the allelic frequencies of CX3CR1V249I and T280M changes were 2.6% and 2.1%, respectively, which were lower than found in Caucasians (25.5% and 14.0%, respectively). Unlike the previous reports, we only detected CCR5P1 and P4 haplotypes in Taiwanese people, and the P1/P1, P1/P4 and P4/P4 genotype frequencies were 21.0%, 41.1% and 37.9%, respectively. The sequencing data confirmed the results of previous studies, showing that CCR5P1 exhibited a complete linkage disequilibrium with a polymorphic allele 59029A present in the CCR5 promoter. Furthermore, fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis revealed that, in the absence of the CCR2–64I mutation, individuals carrying CCR5P1 tended to express more surface CCR5 on monocytes and CD4+ cells. Therefore, this study not only reports the frequencies for the CX3CR1 and CCR5 promoter haplotypes in a Chinese population living in Taiwan, but also identifies a statistical link between the P1/P1 haplotype and the elevated CCR5 expression levels in the study group.

Notes: The effects of the mycoparasites Coniothyrium minitans and Trichoderma atroviride on the suppression of alfalfa blossom blight caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum were evaluated under indoor and field conditions. When T. atroviride (9·0 × 104 conidia/floret) + S. sclerotiorum (6·0 × 103 ascospores/floret) or C. minitans (9·0 × 104 conidia/floret) + S. sclerotiorum (6·0 × 103 ascospores/floret) were applied to detached young alfalfa florets, T. atroviride effectively inhibited saprophytic growth of S. sclerotiorum, whereas C. minitans showed no inhibition under the same conditions. When T. atroviride (6·9 × 104 conidia/floret) + S. sclerotiorum (6·0 × 103 ascospores/floret) or C. minitans (6·9 × 104 conidia/floret) + S. sclerotiorum (6·0 × 103 ascospores/floret) was applied to young alfalfa petals in vivo just after pollination, the percentage of pod formation was higher for T. atroviride+S. sclerotiorum than that for C. minitans+S. sclerotiorum, and the percentage of pod rot was lower for T. atroviride+S. sclerotiorum than that for C. minitans+S. sclerotiorum. However, when they were applied to senescent petals attached to developing pods of alfalfa at 9·2 × 104 conidia/floret together with S. sclerotiorum at 4·5 × 103 ascospores/floret at 14 days after pollination, C. minitans was more effective than T. atroviride in suppressing sclerotinia pod rot and seed rot of alfalfa. Field experiments showed that three applications of C. minitans (5·4 × 106 conidia mL−1) or T. atroviride (5·4 × 106 conidia mL−1) at a 7-day interval to blossoms of alfalfa effectively suppressed sclerotinia pod rot in two out of three annual trials. Coniothyrium minitans effectively suppressed sclerotinia seed rot in all three years, whereas T. atroviride was not effective against seed rot in any of the trial years. The efficacy of C. minitans was not significantly different (P 〉 0·05) from benomyl (250 µg ai mL−1). This study suggests that C. minitans has potential as a biocontrol agent to control blossom blight of alfalfa caused by S. sclerotiorum.
