    Notes: Four samples of Ba-exchanged zeolite A, bearing 0.27, 0.43, 0.58 and 0.74 meq/g Na residualamounts, were thermally treated in the temperature range 200-1500 °C for times up to 28 hours.The same samples were pressed at 30 and 60 MPa to manufacture cylindrical pellets, which werethermally treated at 1300 °C for 5 hours. Thermally treated materials were characterized by roomtemperature XRD. The sequence of thermal transformations that Ba-exchanged zeolite A undergoes(zeolite ® amorphous phase ® hexacelsian ® monoclinic celsian) and the strong mineralizingaction developed by Na are confirmed. Pressing the Ba-exchanged zeolite A powder-like samples toobtain cylindrical pellets is found to expedite the sluggish final phase transition hexacelsian ®monoclinic celsian. The optimum residual Na content of Ba-exchanged zeolite A to be transformedinto monoclinic celsian is assessed to range between 0.27 and 0.43 meq/g

The genetic variation of the endangered freshwater fish Ladigesocypris ghigii, endemic to the island of Rhodes (Greece), was investigated for nine populations, originating from seven different stream systems and a reservoir, both at the mtDNA and nuclear level, in order to suggest conservation actions.2. Both restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of five segments of mitochondrial DNA (ND-5/6, COI and 12S-16S rRNA) amplified by polymerase chain reaction, and random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis, revealed extremely low levels of intra-population polymorphism. It is highly likely that the low intra-population variability is the result of successive bottleneck events evident in shrinkage and expansion of the populations year after year, which may have led to a complete loss of several genotypes and haplotypes, and an increased degree of inbreeding.3. Inter-population genetic structuring was high, with fixation of haplotypes within six of the nine populations and fixation of alleles within populations originating from different waterbodies. It is probable that all haplotypes and/or alleles found were initially represented in all populations. However, because of the long time of isolation coupled with successive bottleneck and subsequent genetic drift, common mtDNA haplotypes and alleles among the populations may have become rare or extinct through stochastic lineage loss.4. Although nucleotide divergence among haplotypes was very shallow, half of the haplotypes recorded (three of six), resulted from nucleotide changes on the 12S–16S rRNA segments, which are the most conserved part of the mitochondrial genome. This fact may indicate that the observed genetic variation did not necessarily result only from the retention of ancestral polymorphism, but may have arisen through mutation and complete lineage sorting over a relatively small number of generations, once the populations had become isolated from one another.5. Our data suggest that two of the L. ghigii populations may be on independent evolutionary trajectories. Considering that each population appears so far well adapted within each site, all populations should be managed and conserved separately.

    Notes: The crystallization behavior of 10 binary glasses belonging to the CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 quaternary system and two glasses corresponding to anorthite and diopside composition was investigated by X-ray diffraction, thermal, and thermomechanical analyses, and scanning electron microscopy. Particular emphasis is laid on the quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis by the Rietveld–reference intensity ratio combined procedure, which seems to be a useful tool to obtain time–temperature–transformation diagrams. Results showed that to obtain glass–ceramics with a significant crystalline phase presence, it is necessary to treat samples at 1000°C for 4 h or at 1100°C for 1 h.

    Notes: Sintering with simultaneous crystallization of powdered glass represents an interesting processing route for glass–ceramics, especially originating from wastes. Highly dense glass–ceramic samples may be obtained from a simple and short treatment at a relatively low temperature. In addition, glass–ceramic matrix composites may be obtained by mixing glass with suitable reinforcements. In this work sintered nepheline glass–ceramics, based on panel glass from cathode ray tubes, are illustrated. A limited addition of Al2O3 platelets caused a significant improvement in the mechanical properties (elastic modulus, bending strength, microhardness, fracture toughness), already remarkable for the un-reinforced glass–ceramic, compared with traditional nepheline glass–ceramics.

    Notes: The microbial community associated with ascocarps of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Tuber borchii Vittad. was studied by both cultivation and direct extraction of bacterial 16S rRNA gene (rDNA) sequence approaches. The inner part of six T. borchii ascoma collected in North-Central Italy was used to establish a bacterial culture collection and to extract the total genomic DNA to obtain a library of 16S rDNAs representative of the truffle bacterial community. Most of the isolates were affiliated to the gamma-Proteobacteria, mainly Fluorescent pseudomonads; some isolates were members of the Bacteroidetes group and Gram-positive bacteria, mostly Bacillaceae. The majority of the clones from the library were alpha-Proteobacteria showing significant similarity values, of greater than 97%, with members of the Sinorhizobium/Ensifer Group, Rhizobium and Bradyrhizobium spp. not previously identified as Tuber-associated bacteria. Only a few bacterial strains belonging to this bacterial subclass were found in the culture collection and isolated on a medium specific for Rhizobium-like organisms. A few clones were members of the beta- and gamma-Proteobacteria; as well as low and high G+C Gram-positive bacteria. Our findings clearly indicate that a dual approach increases the information obtained on the structural composition of a truffle bacterial community as compared to that derived via cultivation or direct recovery of 16S rDNA sequences alone.

    Notes: Ladigesocypris ghigii (Gianferrari, 1927), commonly called gizani, is an endangered freshwater fish endemic to the Greek island of Rhodes. The spawning behaviour of gizani was studied in aquaria, to develop an artificial breeding technique for this endangered species. Spawning in captivity was recorded over 41 spawning days between 15 February and 14 July 2001, under constant temperature (18 or 21°C) and photoperiod 14L/10D. The number of spawning acts in a day was 82 ± 28. No aggressiveness and no territoriality were developed. The mating system of the fish was polygamous, with females spawning more than once. In captivity, eggs are laid either on aquatic plants or on gravel, while in nature fish spawn mainly on algae and plants. The latter suggests that, as far as breeding substrate is concerned, gizani is an opportunistic species using different substrates when necessary.

    Description: The Vena del Gesso' (Gessoso-Solfifera Fm, Messinian) is a 227 m-thick ridge along the western Romagna Apennines (Italy) consisting of up to 16 selenite cycles separated by shales and minor carbonate. The total organic carbon values of these deposits range between 0.0870.016% (gypsum) and 3% (shales). Organic matter is dominated by black debris associated with continental debris. Algae and dynocysts are rare (〈1%). The amount of amorphous organic matter is low but it may reach up to c. 40%. The 87Sr/86Sr of gypsum and carbonate vary from 0.708890 to 0.709024, yielding non-oceanic values with several exceptions that plot within error of coeval oceanic values only in the upper part of the section (from the 6{degrees} bed). The sulphur isotope composition of gypsum range between {delta}34S =+21.8 and +23.7{per thousand} and may represent precipitation of {delta}34S-enriched gypsum due to the fractionation effect or recycling of coeval gypsum with contributions of brine-sediment redox variations. The isotope values of carbonates show a large variability (6.4〈{delta}18O〈+6.05{per thousand}; 14.68〈{delta}13C〈+2.5{per thousand}), suggesting a complex origin by mixing of marine and non-marine waters with a significant contribution of reduced organic matter. These data point to an evaporite basin dominated by continental waters which received significant phases of marine recharge in the upper part together with a marked facies change. Because seawater recharges and a similar facies change are present in other Messinian sections, it follows that we have new possible geochemical and facies markers to correlate the Lower Evaporites across the Mediterranean.

    Description: The recovery and beneficiation of solid waste residues (bottom and fly ash) produced during incineration of municipal wastes are very important goals from the environmental and economic point of view. Some technologies allow not only to reduce the volume of incinerator waste but also to generate products of economic value by vitrification, devitrification, and ceramic processes. Bottom ash is preferable compared to fly ash as a secondary raw material. Mixed with glass cullet, bottom ash can be easily transformed into homogeneous and inert glasses, which can be transformed into glass fibres or sintered glass-ceramics after controlled thermal treatments. Alternatively, bottom ash can be used to produce tiles, in particular glazed tiles containing vitrified bottom ash in the ceramic body, and possibly bricks. The results presented in this review are promising and in accordance with the waste minimization policy as well as resources conservation.
