Notizen: The morphological instability of a growing epitaxially strained dislocation-free solid film is analyzed. An evolution equation for the film surface is derived in the dilute limit of vacancies based on surface diffusion driven by a stress-dependent chemical potential. From the time-dependent linear stability problem the conditions for which a growing film is unstable are determined. It is found that the instability is driven by the lattice mismatch between the film and the substrate; however, low temperatures as well as elastically stiff substrates are stabilizing influences. The results also reveal that the critical film thickness for instability depends on the growth rate of the film itself. Detailed comparison with experimental observations indicates that the instability described exhibits many of the observed features of the onset of the "island instability.''

Notizen: We report the results of a study of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in the I2(B→X) system. For many (v',v‘) bands, several J'→J‘ transitions contribute to the ASE in a cooperative manner. We present spectroscopic and kinetic data that contrast this cooperative stimulated emission to the emission in previously reported optically pumped lasers. Transitions that involve several cooperatively emitting levels produce efficient conversion of the pump laser to near-infrared output.

Notizen: A fixed volume of liquid is placed on a horizontal disk spinning at a constant angular speed. The liquid forms a film that thins continuously due to centrifugal drainage and evaporation or thins to a finite thickness when surface absorption counterbalances drainage. A nonlinear evolution equation describing the shape of the film interface as a function of space and time is derived, and its stability is examined using linear theory. When there is either no mass transfer or there is evaporation from the film surface, infinitesimal disturbances decay for small wave numbers and are transiently stable for larger wave numbers. When absorption is present at the free surface, the film exhibits three different domains of stability: disturbances of small wave numbers decay, disturbances of intermediate wave numbers grow transiently, and those of larger wave numbers grow exponentially.

Notizen: A thin liquid film drains radially off the surface of a horizontal, rotating substrate. Evaporation of solvent from the film increases the fluid viscosity and reduces the radial outflow. Governing equations are developed for the shape of the film interface as a function of space and time, as well as the axisymmetric solvent-concentration distribution, for both unit order and large Peclet numbers. The numerical solution of these equations elucidates how a spinning film with either a corrugated or a flat free surface evolves over time in the presence of a time-varying concentration (and viscosity) field. A correlation for the final film thickness in terms of the physical variables of the system is deduced from the governing equations, the result of which shows good agreement to published experimental results.

Notizen: A cw laser-induced fluorescence experiment is described in which state-to-state rate coefficients for rotation-to-translation energy transfer have been determined from J'=72, v'=6 in IF B 3Π(0+). Using the collision partners He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, N2, and CF4, nearly 500 individual rate coefficients have been measured. The rare-gas atoms display a characteristic behavior with the heavier collision partners more efficiently exchanging large amounts of angular momentum in a single collision.

Notizen: Abstract In the Twin Lakes area, central Sierra Nevada, California, most contact metamorphosed marbles contain calcite + dolomite + forsterite ± diopside ± phlogopite ± tremolite, and most calc-silicate hornfelses contain calcite + diopside + wollastonite + quartz ± anorthite ± K-feldspar ± grossular ± titanite. Mineral-fluid equilibria involving calcite + dolomite + tremolite + diopside + forsterite in two marble samples and wollastonite + anorthite + quartz + grossular in three hornfels samples record P± 3 kbar and T± 630° C. Various isobaric univariant assemblages record CO2-H2O fluid compositions of χCO2= 0.61–0.74 in the marbles and χCO2= 0.11 in the hornfelses. Assuming a siliceous dolomitic limestone protolith consisting of dolomite + quartz ° Calcite ± K-feldspar ± muscovite ± rutile, all plausible prograde reaction pathways were deduced for marble and hornfels on isobaric T-XCO2 diagrams in the model system K2O-CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O-CO2. Progress of the prograde reactions was estimated from measured modes and mass-balance calculations. Time-integrated fluxes of reactive fluid which infiltrated samples were computed for a temperature gradient of 150 °C/km along the fluid flow path, calculated fluid compositions, and estimated reaction progress using the mass-continuity equation. Marbles and hornfelses record values in the range 0.1–3.6 × 104 cm3/cm2 and 4.8–12.9 × 104 cm3/cm2, respectively. For an estimated duration of metamorphism of 105 years, average in situ metamorphic rock permeabilities, calculated from Darcy's Law, are 0.1–8 × 10−6 D in the marbles and 10–27 × 10−6 D in the hornfelses. Reactive metamorphic fluids flowed up-temperature, and were preferentially channellized in hornfelses relative to the marbles. These results appear to give a general characterization of hydrothermal activity during contact metamorphism of small pendants and screens (dimensions ± 1 km or less) associated with emplacement of the Sierra Nevada batholith.

Notizen: Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity within three zones (core, half-radius, and edge) of TFTR [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1986 (IAEA, Vienna, 1987), Vol. 1, p. 51] tokamak plasmas are discussed. Near the core of the plasma column, sawteeth are often observed. Two types of sawteeth are studied in detail; one with complete, and the other with incomplete, magnetic reconnection. Their characteristics are determined by the shape of the q profile. Near the half-radius the m/n=3/2 and 2/1 resistive ballooning modes are found to correlate with a beta collapse. The pressure and the pressure gradient at the mode rational surface are found to play an important role in stability. MHD activity is also studied at the plasma edge during limiter H modes. The edge localized modes (ELM's) are found to have a precursor mode with a frequency between 50–200 kHz and a mode number m/n=1/0. The mode does not show a ballooning structure. While these instabilities have been studied on many other machines, on TFTR the studies have been extended to high pressure (plasma pressure greater than 4×105 Pa) and low collisionality [vi@B|(a/2)〈0.002, ve*(a/2)〈0.01].

Notizen: Measurements of the toroidal rotation speed vφ(r) driven by neutral beam injection in tokamak plasmas and, in particular, simultaneous profile measurements of vφ, Ti, Te, and ne, have provided new insights into the nature of anomalous transport in tokamaks. Low-recycling plasmas heated with unidirectional neutral beam injection exhibit a strong correlation among the local diffusivities, χφ≈χi〉χe. Recent measurements have confirmed similar behavior in broad-density L-mode plasmas. These results are consistent with the conjecture that electrostatic turbulence is the dominant transport mechanism in the tokamak fusion test reactor tokamak (TFTR) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 58, 1004 (1987)], and are inconsistent with predictions both from test-particle models of strong magnetic turbulence and from ripple transport. Toroidal rotation speed measurements in peaked-density TFTR "supershots'' with partially unbalanced beam injection indicate that momentum transport decreases as the density profile becomes more peaked. In high-temperature, peaked-density plasmas the observed gradient scale length parameter ηtoti=d ln Ti/d ln ne correlates reasonably well with predictions of the threshold for exciting ion-temperature-gradient-driven turbulence (ITGDT), as would be expected for plasmas at marginal stability with respect to this strong transport mechanism. In L-mode plasmas where ITGDT is expected to be too weak to enforce marginal stability, ηtoti exceeds this threshold considerably. However, preliminary experiments have failed to observe a significant increase in ion heat transport when ηtoti was rapidly forced above ηc (the threshold for exciting ITGDT) using a perturbative particle source, as would have been expected for a plasma at marginal stability.

Notizen: A thin liquid layer rests on a horizontal plane that is subject to a two-dimensional spatially periodic temperature distribution. Thermocapillary forces on the free surface result in a dimpling interface and a steady viscous flow. Long-wave theory is used to study this system and to determine whether or not there is film dryout locally, and how such dimpling and/or dryout is affected by London–van der Waals forces, surface tension, and hydrostatic effects.
