    Description: When a droplet of liquid 1 falls through liquid 2 to eventually hit the liquid 2-liquid 1 interface, its initial impact on the interface can produce daughter droplets of liquid 1. In some cases, a partial coalescence cascade governed by self-similar capillary-inertial dynamics is observed, where the fall of the secondary droplets in turn continues to produce further daughter droplets. Results show that inertia and interfacial surface tension forces largely govern the process of partial coalescence. The partial coalescence is suppressed by the viscous force when Ohnesorge number is below a critical value and also by gravity force when Bond number exceeds a critical value. Generation of secondary drop is observed for systems of lower Ohnesorge number for liquid 1, lower and intermediate Ohnesorge number for liquid 2 and for low and intermediate values of Bond number. Whenever the horizontal momentum in the liquid column is more than the vertical momentum, secondary drop is formed. A transition regime from partial to complete coalescence is obtained when the neck radius oscillates twice. In this regime, the main body of the column can be fitted to power-law scaling model within a specific time range. We investigated the conditions and the outcome of these coalescence events based on numerical simulations using a coupled level set and volume of fluid method (CLSVOF). © 2010 Cambridge University Press.

    Description: A study was conducted on a 15×15 diallel set of tomato excluding reciprocals to find out the extent of heterosis, combining ability and nature of gene action for yield with two important quality traits: ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and total soluble solids (TSS). Significant differences among genotypes were obtained for all three traits. Positive high significant heterosis was found for yield (41·97, 157·84 and 28·94%), for ascorbic acid (16·68, 54·57 and 161·33%) and for TSS (25·97, 11·93 and 19·02) over the top, the better parent and the commercial control respectively. The magnitude of variance due to general as well as specific combining ability were highly significant indicating the importance of both additive and non-additive gene action. However degree of dominance (o−2 g/o−2 s) revealed the prevalence of a non-additive gene effect. Cross combinations Arka Vikas×Sel-12 (13·19), KS-10×Pant T-3 (1·66) and EC 818703×EC 13042 (0·88) were best specific combiners for ascorbic acid, total soluble solids and yield/plant. Predominance of non-additive gene action plays a greater role in the inheritance of ascorbic acid and total soluble solids in tomato under hill conditions.

    Description: Experiments were conducted in Bangkok clay soil to investigate the influence of planting date, tiller separation and plant density on the yield and yield attributes of parent and clone plants of two transplanted rice varieties. The 15 July transplanting of mother crop and collected vegetative tillers and retransplanting on 15 August showed significantly high grain yield (3·8 t/ha). The photoperiod-insensitive variety RD23 gave higher yield (3·8 t/ha) than the photoperiod-sensitive variety KDML105 (3·0 t/ha). Tiller separation up to 4 tillers/hill did not adversely affect the mother crop. Vegetative tillers transplanted with 2–4 tillers/hill gave a similar yield as the mother crop in both the seasons. Vegetative tillers gave a higher yield than nursery seedlings transplanted on the same date. The yield components, i.e. weight of 1000 grains, grains/panicle and per cent filled grains, showed better responses with early transplanting of KDML105 in the mother crop and vegetative tillers except for panicle number and panicle length of vegetative tillers with RD23. The results suggest that in some flood-prone lowlands, where the transplanted crop is damaged by natural hazards, vegetative propagation using tillers separated (maximum 4/hill) from the previously established transplanted crop is beneficial for higher productivity.
