    Description: We report on results of an all-sky search for high-energy neutrino events interacting within the IceCube neutrino detector conducted between May 2010 and May 2012. The search follows up on the previous detection of two PeV neutrino events, with improved sensitivity and extended energy coverage down to about 30 TeV. Twenty-six additional events were observed, substantially more than expected from atmospheric backgrounds. Combined, both searches reject a purely atmospheric origin for the 28 events at the 4sigma level. These 28 events, which include the highest energy neutrinos ever observed, have flavors, directions, and energies inconsistent with those expected from the atmospheric muon and neutrino backgrounds. These properties are, however, consistent with generic predictions for an additional component of extraterrestrial origin.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉IceCube Collaboration -- Aartsen, M G -- Abbasi, R -- Abdou, Y -- Ackermann, M -- Adams, J -- Aguilar, J A -- Ahlers, M -- Altmann, D -- Auffenberg, J -- Bai, X -- Baker, M -- Barwick, S W -- Baum, V -- Bay, R -- Beatty, J J -- Bechet, S -- Becker Tjus, J -- Becker, K-H -- Benabderrahmane, M L -- BenZvi, S -- Berghaus, P -- Berley, D -- Bernardini, E -- Bernhard, A -- Bertrand, D -- Besson, D Z -- Binder, G -- Bindig, D -- Bissok, M -- Blaufuss, E -- Blumenthal, J -- Boersma, D J -- Bohaichuk, S -- Bohm, C -- Bose, D -- Boser, S -- Botner, O -- Brayeur, L -- Bretz, H-P -- Brown, A M -- Bruijn, R -- Brunner, J -- Carson, M -- Casey, J -- Casier, M -- Chirkin, D -- Christov, A -- Christy, B -- Clark, K -- Clevermann, F -- Coenders, S -- Cohen, S -- Cowen, D F -- Cruz Silva, A H -- Danninger, M -- Daughhetee, J -- Davis, J C -- Day, M -- De Clercq, C -- De Ridder, S -- Desiati, P -- de Vries, K D -- de With, M -- DeYoung, T -- Diaz-Velez, J C -- Dunkman, M -- Eagan, R -- Eberhardt, B -- Eichmann, B -- Eisch, J -- Ellsworth, R W -- Euler, S -- Evenson, P A -- Fadiran, O -- Fazely, A R -- Fedynitch, A -- Feintzeig, J -- Feusels, T -- Filimonov, K -- Finley, C -- Fischer-Wasels, T -- Flis, S -- Franckowiak, A -- Frantzen, K -- Fuchs, T -- Gaisser, T K -- Gallagher, J -- Gerhardt, L -- Gladstone, L -- Glusenkamp, T -- Goldschmidt, A -- Golup, G -- Gonzalez, J G -- Goodman, J A -- Gora, D -- Grandmont, D T -- Grant, D -- Gross, A -- Ha, C -- Haj Ismail, A -- Hallen, P -- Hallgren, A -- Halzen, F -- Hanson, K -- Heereman, D -- Heinen, D -- Helbing, K -- Hellauer, R -- Hickford, S -- Hill, G C -- Hoffman, K D -- Hoffmann, R -- Homeier, A -- Hoshina, K -- Huelsnitz, W -- Hulth, P O -- Hultqvist, K -- Hussain, S -- Ishihara, A -- Jacobi, E -- Jacobsen, J -- Jagielski, K -- Japaridze, G S -- Jero, K -- Jlelati, O -- Kaminsky, B -- Kappes, A -- Karg, T -- Karle, A -- Kelley, J L -- Kiryluk, J -- Klas, J -- Klein, S R -- Kohne, J-H -- Kohnen, G -- Kolanoski, H -- Kopke, L -- Kopper, C -- Kopper, S -- Koskinen, D J -- Kowalski, M -- Krasberg, M -- Krings, K -- Kroll, G -- Kunnen, J -- Kurahashi, N -- Kuwabara, T -- Labare, M -- Landsman, H -- Larson, M J -- Lesiak-Bzdak, M -- Leuermann, M -- Leute, J -- Lunemann, J -- Madsen, J -- Maggi, G -- Maruyama, R -- Mase, K -- Matis, H S -- McNally, F -- Meagher, K -- Merck, M -- Meures, T -- Miarecki, S -- Middell, E -- Milke, N -- Miller, J -- Mohrmann, L -- Montaruli, T -- Morse, R -- Nahnhauer, R -- Naumann, U -- Niederhausen, H -- Nowicki, S C -- Nygren, D R -- Obertacke, A -- Odrowski, S -- Olivas, A -- O'Murchadha, A -- Paul, L -- Pepper, J A -- Perez de los Heros, C -- Pfendner, C -- Pieloth, D -- Pinat, E -- Posselt, J -- Price, P B -- Przybylski, G T -- Radel, L -- Rameez, M -- Rawlins, K -- Redl, P -- Reimann, R -- Resconi, E -- Rhode, W -- Ribordy, M -- Richman, M -- Riedel, B -- Rodrigues, J P -- Rott, C -- Ruhe, T -- Ruzybayev, B -- Ryckbosch, D -- Saba, S M -- Salameh, T -- Sander, H-G -- Santander, M -- Sarkar, S -- Schatto, K -- Scheriau, F -- Schmidt, T -- Schmitz, M -- Schoenen, S -- Schoneberg, S -- Schonwald, A -- Schukraft, A -- Schulte, L -- Schulz, O -- Seckel, D -- Sestayo, Y -- Seunarine, S -- Shanidze, R -- Sheremata, C -- Smith, M W E -- Soldin, D -- Spiczak, G M -- Spiering, C -- Stamatikos, M -- Stanev, T -- Stasik, A -- Stezelberger, T -- Stokstad, R G -- Stossl, A -- Strahler, E A -- Strom, R -- Sullivan, G W -- Taavola, H -- Taboada, I -- Tamburro, A -- Tepe, A -- Ter-Antonyan, S -- Tesic, G -- Tilav, S -- Toale, P A -- Toscano, S -- Unger, E -- Usner, M -- van Eijndhoven, N -- Van Overloop, A -- van Santen, J -- Vehring, M -- Voge, M -- Vraeghe, M -- Walck, C -- Waldenmaier, T -- Wallraff, M -- Weaver, Ch -- Wellons, M -- Wendt, C -- Westerhoff, S -- Whitehorn, N -- Wiebe, K -- Wiebusch, C H -- Williams, D R -- Wissing, H -- Wolf, M -- Wood, T R -- Woschnagg, K -- Xu, D L -- Xu, X W -- Yanez, J P -- Yodh, G -- Yoshida, S -- Zarzhitsky, P -- Ziemann, J -- Zierke, S -- Zoll, M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2013 Nov 22;342(6161):1242856. doi: 10.1126/science.1242856.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24264993" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: Pulsars emit from low-frequency radio waves up to high-energy gamma-rays, generated anywhere from the stellar surface out to the edge of the magnetosphere. Detecting correlated mode changes across the electromagnetic spectrum is therefore key to understanding the physical relationship among the emission sites. Through simultaneous observations, we detected synchronous switching in the radio and x-ray emission properties of PSR B0943+10. When the pulsar is in a sustained radio-"bright" mode, the x-rays show only an unpulsed, nonthermal component. Conversely, when the pulsar is in a radio-"quiet" mode, the x-ray luminosity more than doubles and a 100% pulsed thermal component is observed along with the nonthermal component. This indicates rapid, global changes to the conditions in the magnetosphere, which challenge all proposed pulsar emission theories.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Hermsen, W -- Hessels, J W T -- Kuiper, L -- van Leeuwen, J -- Mitra, D -- de Plaa, J -- Rankin, J M -- Stappers, B W -- Wright, G A E -- Basu, R -- Alexov, A -- Coenen, T -- Griessmeier, J-M -- Hassall, T E -- Karastergiou, A -- Keane, E -- Kondratiev, V I -- Kramer, M -- Kuniyoshi, M -- Noutsos, A -- Serylak, M -- Pilia, M -- Sobey, C -- Weltevrede, P -- Zagkouris, K -- Asgekar, A -- Avruch, I M -- Batejat, F -- Bell, M E -- Bell, M R -- Bentum, M J -- Bernardi, G -- Best, P -- Birzan, L -- Bonafede, A -- Breitling, F -- Broderick, J -- Bruggen, M -- Butcher, H R -- Ciardi, B -- Duscha, S -- Eisloffel, J -- Falcke, H -- Fender, R -- Ferrari, C -- Frieswijk, W -- Garrett, M A -- de Gasperin, F -- de Geus, E -- Gunst, A W -- Heald, G -- Hoeft, M -- Horneffer, A -- Iacobelli, M -- Kuper, G -- Maat, P -- Macario, G -- Markoff, S -- McKean, J P -- Mevius, M -- Miller-Jones, J C A -- Morganti, R -- Munk, H -- Orru, E -- Paas, H -- Pandey-Pommier, M -- Pandey, V N -- Pizzo, R -- Polatidis, A G -- Rawlings, S -- Reich, W -- Rottgering, H -- Scaife, A M M -- Schoenmakers, A -- Shulevski, A -- Sluman, J -- Steinmetz, M -- Tagger, M -- Tang, Y -- Tasse, C -- ter Veen, S -- Vermeulen, R -- van de Brink, R H -- van Weeren, R J -- Wijers, R A M J -- Wise, M W -- Wucknitz, O -- Yatawatta, S -- Zarka, P -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2013 Jan 25;339(6118):436-9. doi: 10.1126/science.1230960.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉SRON, Netherlands Institute for Space Research, Sorbonnelaan 2, 3584 CA Utrecht, Netherlands. w.hermsen@sron.nl〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23349288" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: A genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment was conducted in a discovery sample of 101,069 individuals and a replication sample of 25,490. Three independent single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are genome-wide significant (rs9320913, rs11584700, rs4851266), and all three replicate. Estimated effects sizes are small (coefficient of determination R(2) approximately 0.02%), approximately 1 month of schooling per allele. A linear polygenic score from all measured SNPs accounts for approximately 2% of the variance in both educational attainment and cognitive function. Genes in the region of the loci have previously been associated with health, cognitive, and central nervous system phenotypes, and bioinformatics analyses suggest the involvement of the anterior caudate nucleus. These findings provide promising candidate SNPs for follow-up work, and our effect size estimates can anchor power analyses in social-science genetics.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a Description: Supermassive black holes with masses of millions to billions of solar masses are commonly found in the centers of galaxies. Astronomers seek to image jet formation using radio interferometry but still suffer from insufficient angular resolution. An alternative method to resolve small structures is to measure the time variability of their emission. Here we report on gamma-ray observations of the radio galaxy IC 310 obtained with the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes, revealing variability with doubling time scales faster than 4.8 min. Causality constrains the size of the emission region to be smaller than 20% of the gravitational radius of its central black hole. We suggest that the emission is associated with pulsar-like particle acceleration by the electric field across a magnetospheric gap at the base of the radio jet.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Aleksic, J -- Ansoldi, S -- Antonelli, L A -- Antoranz, P -- Babic, A -- Bangale, P -- Barrio, J A -- Becerra Gonzalez, J -- Bednarek, W -- Bernardini, E -- Biasuzzi, B -- Biland, A -- Blanch, O -- Bonnefoy, S -- Bonnoli, G -- Borracci, F -- Bretz, T -- Carmona, E -- Carosi, A -- Colin, P -- Colombo, E -- Contreras, J L -- Cortina, J -- Covino, S -- Da Vela, P -- Dazzi, F -- De Angelis, A -- De Caneva, G -- De Lotto, B -- de Ona Wilhelmi, E -- Delgado Mendez, C -- Dominis Prester, D -- Dorner, D -- Doro, M -- Einecke, S -- Eisenacher, D -- Elsaesser, D -- Fonseca, M V -- Font, L -- Frantzen, K -- Fruck, C -- Galindo, D -- Garcia Lopez, R J -- Garczarczyk, M -- Garrido Terrats, D -- Gaug, M -- Godinovic, N -- Gonzalez Munoz, A -- Gozzini, S R -- Hadasch, D -- Hanabata, Y -- Hayashida, M -- Herrera, J -- Hildebrand, D -- Hose, J -- Hrupec, D -- Idec, W -- Kadenius, V -- Kellermann, H -- Kodani, K -- Konno, Y -- Krause, J -- Kubo, H -- Kushida, J -- La Barbera, A -- Lelas, D -- Lewandowska, N -- Lindfors, E -- Lombardi, S -- Longo, F -- Lopez, M -- Lopez-Coto, R -- Lopez-Oramas, A -- Lorenz, E -- Lozano, I -- Makariev, M -- Mallot, K -- Maneva, G -- Mankuzhiyil, N -- Mannheim, K -- Maraschi, L -- Marcote, B -- Mariotti, M -- Martinez, M -- Mazin, D -- Menzel, U -- Miranda, J M -- Mirzoyan, R -- Moralejo, A -- Munar-Adrover, P -- Nakajima, D -- Niedzwiecki, A -- Nilsson, K -- Nishijima, K -- Noda, K -- Orito, R -- Overkemping, A -- Paiano, S -- Palatiello, M -- Paneque, D -- Paoletti, R -- Paredes, J M -- Paredes-Fortuny, X -- Persic, M -- Poutanen, J -- Prada Moroni, P G -- Prandini, E -- Puljak, I -- Reinthal, R -- Rhode, W -- Ribo, M -- Rico, J -- Rodriguez Garcia, J -- Rugamer, S -- Saito, T -- Saito, K -- Satalecka, K -- Scalzotto, V -- Scapin, V -- Schultz, C -- Schweizer, T -- Shore, S N -- Sillanpaa, A -- Sitarek, J -- Snidaric, I -- Sobczynska, D -- Spanier, F -- Stamatescu, V -- Stamerra, A -- Steinbring, T -- Storz, J -- Strzys, M -- Takalo, L -- Takami, H -- Tavecchio, F -- Temnikov, P -- Terzic, T -- Tescaro, D -- Teshima, M -- Thaele, J -- Tibolla, O -- Torres, D F -- Toyama, T -- Treves, A -- Uellenbeck, M -- Vogler, P -- Zanin, R -- Kadler, M -- Schulz, R -- Ros, E -- Bach, U -- Krauss, F -- Wilms, J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2014 Nov 28;346(6213):1080-4. doi: 10.1126/science.1256183. Description: Protons and helium nuclei are the most abundant components of the cosmic radiation. Precise measurements of their fluxes are needed to understand the acceleration and subsequent propagation of cosmic rays in our Galaxy. We report precision measurements of the proton and helium spectra in the rigidity range 1 gigavolt to 1.2 teravolts performed by the satellite-borne experiment PAMELA (payload for antimatter matter exploration and light-nuclei astrophysics). We find that the spectral shapes of these two species are different and cannot be described well by a single power law. These data challenge the current paradigm of cosmic-ray acceleration in supernova remnants followed by diffusive propagation in the Galaxy. More complex processes of acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays are required to explain the spectral structures observed in our data.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Adriani, O -- Barbarino, G C -- Bazilevskaya, G A -- Bellotti, R -- Boezio, M -- Bogomolov, E A -- Bonechi, L -- Bongi, M -- Bonvicini, V -- Borisov, S -- Bottai, S -- Bruno, A -- Cafagna, F -- Campana, D -- Carbone, R -- Carlson, P -- Casolino, M -- Castellini, G -- Consiglio, L -- De Pascale, M P -- De Santis, C -- De Simone, N -- Di Felice, V -- Galper, A M -- Gillard, W -- Grishantseva, L -- Jerse, G -- Karelin, A V -- Koldashov, S V -- Krutkov, S Y -- Kvashnin, A N -- Leonov, A -- Malakhov, V -- Malvezzi, V -- Marcelli, L -- Mayorov, A G -- Menn, W -- Mikhailov, V V -- Mocchiutti, E -- Monaco, A -- Mori, N -- Nikonov, N -- Osteria, G -- Palma, F -- Papini, P -- Pearce, M -- Picozza, P -- Pizzolotto, C -- Ricci, M -- Ricciarini, S B -- Rossetto, L -- Sarkar, R -- Simon, M -- Sparvoli, R -- Spillantini, P -- Stozhkov, Y I -- Vacchi, A -- Vannuccini, E -- Vasilyev, G -- Voronov, S A -- Yurkin, Y T -- Wu, J -- Zampa, G -- Zampa, N -- Zverev, V G -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2011 Apr 1;332(6025):69-72. doi: 10.1126/science.1199172. Description: A young and energetic pulsar powers the well-known Crab Nebula. Here, we describe two separate gamma-ray (photon energy greater than 100 mega-electron volts) flares from this source detected by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The first flare occurred in February 2009 and lasted approximately 16 days. The second flare was detected in September 2010 and lasted approximately 4 days. During these outbursts, the gamma-ray flux from the nebula increased by factors of four and six, respectively. The brevity of the flares implies that the gamma rays were emitted via synchrotron radiation from peta-electron-volt (10(15) electron volts) electrons in a region smaller than 1.4 x 10(-2) parsecs. These are the highest-energy particles that can be associated with a discrete astronomical source, and they pose challenges to particle acceleration theory.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Abdo, A A -- Ackermann, M -- Ajello, M -- Allafort, A -- Baldini, L -- Ballet, J -- Barbiellini, G -- Bastieri, D -- Bechtol, K -- Bellazzini, R -- Berenji, B -- Blandford, R D -- Bloom, E D -- Bonamente, E -- Borgland, A W -- Bouvier, A -- Brandt, T J -- Bregeon, J -- Brez, A -- Brigida, M -- Bruel, P -- Buehler, R -- Buson, S -- Caliandro, G A -- Cameron, R A -- Cannon, A -- Caraveo, P A -- Casandjian, J M -- Celik, O -- Charles, E -- Chekhtman, A -- Cheung, C C -- Chiang, J -- Ciprini, S -- Claus, R -- Cohen-Tanugi, J -- Costamante, L -- Cutini, S -- D'Ammando, F -- Dermer, C D -- de Angelis, A -- de Luca, A -- de Palma, F -- Digel, S W -- do Couto e Silva, E -- Drell, P S -- Drlica-Wagner, A -- Dubois, R -- Dumora, D -- Favuzzi, C -- Fegan, S J -- Ferrara, E C -- Focke, W B -- Fortin, P -- Frailis, M -- Fukazawa, Y -- Funk, S -- Fusco, P -- Gargano, F -- Gasparrini, D -- Gehrels, N -- Germani, S -- Giglietto, N -- Giordano, F -- Giroletti, M -- Glanzman, T -- Godfrey, G -- Grenier, I A -- Grondin, M-H -- Grove, J E -- Guiriec, S -- Hadasch, D -- Hanabata, Y -- Harding, A K -- Hayashi, K -- Hayashida, M -- Hays, E -- Horan, D -- Itoh, R -- Johannesson, G -- Johnson, A S -- Johnson, T J -- Khangulyan, D -- Kamae, T -- Katagiri, H -- Kataoka, J -- Kerr, M -- Knodlseder, J -- Kuss, M -- Lande, J -- Latronico, L -- Lee, S-H -- Lemoine-Goumard, M -- Longo, F -- Loparco, F -- Lubrano, P -- Madejski, G M -- Makeev, A -- Marelli, M -- Mazziotta, M N -- McEnery, J E -- Michelson, P F -- Mitthumsiri, W -- Mizuno, T -- Moiseev, A A -- Monte, C -- Monzani, M E -- Morselli, A -- Moskalenko, I V -- Murgia, S -- Nakamori, T -- Naumann-Godo, M -- Nolan, P L -- Norris, J P -- Nuss, E -- Ohsugi, T -- Okumura, A -- Omodei, N -- Ormes, J F -- Ozaki, M -- Paneque, D -- Parent, D -- Pelassa, V -- Pepe, M -- Pesce-Rollins, M -- Pierbattista, M -- Piron, F -- Porter, T A -- Raino, S -- Rando, R -- Ray, P S -- Razzano, M -- Reimer, A -- Reimer, O -- Reposeur, T -- Ritz, S -- Romani, R W -- Sadrozinski, H F-W -- Sanchez, D -- Saz Parkinson, P M -- Scargle, J D -- Schalk, T L -- Sgro, C -- Siskind, E J -- Smith, P D -- Spandre, G -- Spinelli, P -- Strickman, M S -- Suson, D J -- Takahashi, H -- Takahashi, T -- Tanaka, T -- Thayer, J B -- Thompson, D J -- Tibaldo, L -- Torres, D F -- Tosti, G -- Tramacere, A -- Troja, E -- Uchiyama, Y -- Vandenbroucke, J -- Vasileiou, V -- Vianello, G -- Vitale, V -- Wang, P -- Wood, K S -- Yang, Z -- Ziegler, M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2011 Feb 11;331(6018):739-42. doi: 10.1126/science.1199705. Description: Nuclear collisions recreate conditions in the universe microseconds after the Big Bang. Only a very small fraction of the emitted fragments are light nuclei, but these states are of fundamental interest. We report the observation of antihypertritons--comprising an antiproton, an antineutron, and an antilambda hyperon--produced by colliding gold nuclei at high energy. Our analysis yields 70 +/- 17 antihypertritons ((Lambda)(3)-H) and 157 +/- 30 hypertritons (Lambda3H). The measured yields of Lambda3H ((Lambda)(3)-H) and 3He (3He) are similar, suggesting an equilibrium in coordinate and momentum space populations of up, down, and strange quarks and antiquarks, unlike the pattern observed at lower collision energies. The production and properties of antinuclei, and of nuclei containing strange quarks, have implications spanning nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology.〈br /〉〈span
