Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The Arctic region is undergoing dramatic transformation. Rapid change due to climate warming is currently affecting the Arctic more than any other region in the world: the permafrost is melting, glaciers are receding, the sea ice is shrinking. With the melting of ice, the circumpolar region is subject to increasing forces of globalization, and navigation through the Northwest and the Northeast passages is rapidly emerging as a practical and commercial proposition. Moreover, the Arctic may be home to 30 per cent of the planet's undiscovered natural gas reserves and 13 per cent of its undiscovered oil. "What holds the Arctic together?" The emphasis here is on convergence, rather than divergence, the Arctic's centrality not its eccentricity. The contributions gathered together in this book all address essential questions posed by geophysicists, political scientists, jurists, geographers and historians. How can science calculate and assess the scale of change in this geographic space, in particular concerning the melting of ice? To what extent are the native populations listened to and act as active participants in decision-making concerning the Arctic? In the context of post-Cold War international and regional cooperation, what is the present state of Arctic governance? How are the Arctic States themselves cooperating in facing the challenges that lie ahead? Are existing juridical arrangements adequate? What role in the Arctic can be played by actors such as the European Union? To what extent are other powerful countries, such as the Asian giants, taking a direct interest in the development of the Arctic?

Beschreibung: The southern Hikurangi Subduction Margin is characterized by significant accretion with predicted high rates of fluid expulsion. Bottom simulating reflections (BSRs) are widespread on this margin, predominantly occurring beneath thrust ridges. We present seismic data across the Porangahau Ridge on the outer accretionary wedge. The data show high-amplitude reflections above the regional BSR level. Based on polarity and reflection strength, we interpret these reflections as being caused by free gas. We propose that the presence of gas above the regional level of BSRs indicates local upwarping of the base of gas hydrate stability caused by advective heatflow from upward migrating fluids, although we cannot entirely rule out alternative processes. Simplified modelling of the increase of the thermal gradient associated with fluid flow suggests that funnelling of upward migrating fluids beneath low-permeability slope basins into the Porangahau Ridge would not lead to the pronounced thermal anomaly inferred from upwarping of the base of gas hydrate stability. Focussing of fluid flow is predicted to take place deep in the accretionary wedge and/or the underthrust sediments. Above the high-amplitude reflections, sediment reflectivity is low. A lack of lateral continuity of reflections suggests that reflectivity is lost because of a destruction of sediment layering from deformation rather than gas-hydrate-related amplitude blanking. Structural permeability from fracturing of sediments during deformation may facilitate fluid expulsion on the ridge. A gap in the BSR in the southern part of the study area may be caused by a loss of gas during fluid expulsion. We speculate that gaps in otherwise continuous BSRs that are observed beneath some thrusts on the Hikurangi Margin may be characteristic of other locations experiencing focussed fluid expulsion.

Beschreibung: In November 2007 we conducted a water-column and seafloor mapping study of the submarine volcanoes of the Aeolian Arc in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea aboard the R/V Urania. A total of 26 CTD casts were completed, 13 vertical casts and 13 tows. In addition to in situ measurements of temperature, conductivity, pressure and suspended particles, we also collected discrete samples for helium isotopes, methane, and trace metals. The helium isotope ratio, which is known to be an unambiguous indicator of hydrothermal input, showed a clear excess above background at 5 out of the 10 submarine volcanoes surveyed. We found the strongest helium anomaly over Marsili seamount, where the 3He/4He ratio reached maximum values of 3He = 23% at 610 m depth compared with background values of ~ 7%. We also found smaller but distinct 3He anomalies over Enerato, Eolo, Palinuro, and Secca del Capo. We interpret these results as indicating the presence of hydrothermal activity on these 5 seamounts. Hydrothermal venting has been documented at subsea vents offshore of the islands of Panarea, Stromboli, and Vulcano (Dando et al., 1999; Di Roberto et al., 2008), and hydrothermal deposits have been sampled on many of the submarine volcanoes of the Aeolian Arc (Dekov and Savelli, 2004). However, as far as we know this is the first evidence of present day hydrothermal activity on Marsili, Enerato, and Eolo. Samples collected over Filicudi, Glabro, Lamentini, Sisifo, and Alcioni had 3He very close to the regional background values, suggesting either absence of or very weak hydrothermal activity on these seamounts. Helium isotope measurements from the background hydrocasts positioned between the volcanoes revealed the presence of an excess in 3He throughout the SE Tyrrhenian Sea. These background profiles reach a consistent maximum of about 3He = 11% at 2300 m depth. Historical helium profiles collected in the central and northern Tyrrhenian Sea in 1987 and 1997 do not show this deep 3He maximum (W. Roether and B. Klein, private comm.). Furthermore, the maximum is too deep to be attributed to the volcanoes of the Aeolian Arc, which are active at 〈1000 m depth. We are currently conducting additional measurements to determine whether this deep 3He maximum is from a local hydrothermal source or is somehow related to the deep water mass transient which occurred in the eastern Mediterranean in the 1990’s.

Beschreibung: In November 2007 we conducted a water column and seafloor mapping study of the submarine volcanoes of the Aeolian Arc in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea aboard the R/V Urania. On 26 conductivity‐temperature‐depth casts and tows we measured temperature, conductivity, pressure, and light scattering and also collected discrete samples for helium isotopes, methane, and pH. The 3He/4He isotope ratio, an unambiguous indicator of hydrothermal input, showed a clear excess above background at 6 of the 10 submarine volcanoes surveyed. Marsili seamount had the highest anomaly, where the 3He/4He ratio reached a d3He value of 23% at 610 m depth compared with background values of ∼5%. Smaller but distinct d3He anomalies occurred over Palinuro, Enarete, Eolo, Sisifo, and Secca del Capo. Although hydrothermal emissions are known to occur offshore of some Aeolian subaerial volcanoes, and hydrothermal deposits have been sampled throughout the arc, our results are the first to confirm active discharge on Marsili, Enarete, Eolo, Sisifo, and Secca del Capo. Samples collected over Lametini, Filicudi North, Alicudi North, and Alcione had d3He near the regional background values, suggesting either absence of, or very weak, hydrothermal activity on these seamounts. Hydrocasts between the volcanoes revealed a consistent d3He maximum between 11% and 13% at 2000mdepth throughout the SE Tyrrhenian Sea. The volcanoes of the Aeolian arc and the Marsili back arc, all 〈1000 m deep, cannot contribute directly to this maximum. This deep 3He excess may be a remnant of tritium decay or may have been produced by an unknown deep hydrothermal source.

Beschreibung: Changes in proximate composition and lipid quality of atherina Atherina sp. during sun drying processing were investigated. The peroxide value PV, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances TBARS and free fatty acids FFA were determined to monitor the progressive oxidative lipid changes during processing. According to Duncan’s test, significant differences (p 〈 0.05) were found in the proximate composition during the drying process. Lipid, protein and ash contents increased significantly after processing. Thus, a high decrease in moisture content was recorded in the final product to reach 22.37%. Fresh atherina oil shows an excellent quality with a low PV (0.97 meq active O2/kg oil), FFA (1.82%) and TBARS (0.32 mg MA/kg oil) levels. After sun drying treatment, PV and FFA increased significantly (p 〈 0.05) to reach 2.02 meq active O2/kg oil and 3.67% respectively. The primary oxidation products (lipid hydroperoxides) are produced in our processing; however, they haven’t generally a flavour impact on the final dried product.

Beschreibung: The growth and reproductive properties of sand smelt caught from Kerkennah islands (Atherina lagunae) and the north coasts of Tunisia (Atherina boyeri) were studied by sampling carried out between January 2008 and December 2008. A total of 1060 specimens were examined. The sex of species was determined macroscopically and the proportion of males was significantly lower than that of females. Lengthweight relationship of Atherina lagunae was estimated as W= 0.0085TL2.9313 for females and W= 0.009TL2.8789 for males, being allometrically negative for both sexes. For the length-weight relationship of Atherina boyeri, allometry is positive for both sexes. The reproductive season, evaluated from the gonado-somatic index (GSI), extended from March to June for specimens from Kerkennah islands and from March to July for Sand smelt from north coasts of Tunisia

Beschreibung: Recently it has been confirmed genetically, the heterogeneity of anchovy colonizing the Mediterranean. In this work, we became interested in the study of this heterogeneity in Tunisian waters, through analysis and comparison of shapes of otoliths. Indeed, this method based on elliptic Fourier analysis is a powerful new technique. The Fourier descriptors are characterized by harmonics that each is represented by four coefficients. Statistical analysis of these factors allows the separation of specimens studied. Applying this technique allowed us to separate three populations of anchovies catched in Tunisian waters.
