Notes: Abstract The influence of crack closure and elasto-plastic flow on the bending behavior of thin cracked plates is investigated through use of an incremental elasto-plastic plate bending finite element computer program. The finite element program was developed using assumptions consistent with Kirchhoff fourth order plate theory while the material property treatment permits general isotropic work hardening with local elastic unloading. This technique is applied to the problem of a large centrally through cracked plate subject to remote circular bending. Comparison is drawn between two cases of the bending problem. The first neglects the possibility of crack face interference with bending, and the second includes a kinematic prohibition against the crack face from passing through the symmetry plane. Results are reported which isolate the effects of elasto-plastic flow and crack closure.

Notes: Abstract The use of fluorescein dye for the study of ocular dynamics in ophthalmology is briefly reviewed. General principles for designing objective fluorophotometers for measuring the rate of change of fluorescein concentration are discussed. Details of the circuitry and performance of a new improved objective fluorophotometer using a quartz-halogen excitation source and a synchronous detector are presented. In a preliminary clinical trial the mean tear turnover rate for ten normal subjects was found to be 21±13% min−1.

Description: Motivation: Peak detection is a key step in the preprocessing of untargeted metabolomics data generated from high-resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS). The common practice is to use filters with predetermined parameters to select peaks in the LC/MS profile. This rigid approach can cause suboptimal performance when the choice of peak model and parameters do not suit the data characteristics. Results: Here we present a method that learns directly from various data features of the extracted ion chromatograms (EICs) to differentiate between true peak regions from noise regions in the LC/MS profile. It utilizes the knowledge of known metabolites, as well as robust machine learning approaches. Unlike currently available methods, this new approach does not assume a parametric peak shape model and allows maximum flexibility. We demonstrate the superiority of the new approach using real data. Because matching to known metabolites entails uncertainties and cannot be considered a gold standard, we also developed a probabilistic receiver-operating characteristic (pROC) approach that can incorporate uncertainties. Availability and implementation: The new peak detection approach is implemented as part of the apLCMS package available at http://web1.sph.emory.edu/apLCMS/ Contact: tyu8@emory.edu Supplementary information: Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

Description: In this study we investigate ultrafine particle (UFP) fluxes using a first order eddy viscosity turbulence closure Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model and determine the different factors that influence emissions of UFP into the urban boundary layer. Both vertical turbulent fluxes as well as the fluxes due to mean circulatory flow are shown to contribute to the overall ventilation characteristics of street canyons. We then derive a simple parameterised numerical prediction model for canyon top UFP venting which is then compared with tower based micrometeorological flux measurements obtained during the REPARTEE & CityFlux field experiments.
