Kurzfassung: This book gathers a collection of essays that describe recent innovations in food technology including food processing, packaging, food safety, and novel ingredients. By 2050, the world will face the challenge of having to feed an estimated 9 billion people. In order to meet that challenge, innovations in food research are of the utmost importance. The book is divided into four sections, each of which explores an important aspect like food processing, food microbiology, and nutritional security. Written by respected scholars in the field, the respective chapters discuss a range of new and enhanced food materials, as well as processing innovations to extend shelf life and reduce toxic effects. The book also addresses the health potential of various nutraceuticals, bio-absorption of metals and their positive impacts on living systems, as well as methods for reducing food wastage, preventing the loss of nutritive value, and preserving or enhancing palatability. Given its scope, the book will be highly interesting for food scientists, both in academia and the food industry. It will also benefit advanced graduate students and senior researchers.

Kurzfassung: This textbook provides an overview of applications of advanced nanomaterials, basic lab set up and requirements in for their synthesis, techniques and career scope of nanotechnology in industries and research. Pollution of air, water, soil is an ever increasing environmental problem attributed to increasing population, global industrialization and unplanned urbanization, has acquired alarming dimensions. It is the most dangerous and worst problem that puts the lives of people, animals, and plants on the earth in danger. An effective, efficient and sustainable approach for managing pollution related problems requires the utmost attention of the scientific community to tackle this menace for the society to lead a healthy and quality life. A number of techniques and books, literatures have been developed in recent years to treat environmental contaminants. However, most of these are not economically viable, environmentally benign and suffer due to cumbersome multi-step manipulations. The purpose of this textbook is to inform students about the application of functionalized nanoparticles as a new approach to supplement traditional treatment methods in cost and time effective manner. The simplistic means to assemble nanoparticles to the constituents of next generation technologies in environment cleanup and sensing are the main objectives of the book. The toxicological footprinting of released advanced functional nanomaterials in ecosystem will also be discussed in the book.

Beschreibung: Background: Dense consensus genetic maps based on high-throughput genotyping platforms are valuable for making genetic gains in Brassica napus through quantitative trait locus identification, efficient predictive molecular breeding, and map-based gene cloning. This report describes the construction of the first B. napus consensus map consisting of a 1,359 anchored array based genotyping platform; Diversity Arrays Technology (DArT), and non-DArT markers from six populations originating from Australia, Canada, China and Europe. We aligned the B. napus DArT sequences with genomic scaffolds from Brassica rapa and Brassica oleracea, and identified DArT loci that showed linkage with qualitative and quantitative loci associated with agronomic traits. Results: The integrated consensus map covered a total of 1,987.2 cM and represented all 19 chromosomes of the A and C genomes, with an average map density of one marker per 1.46 cM, corresponding to approximately 0.88 Mbp of the haploid genome. Through in silico physical mapping 2,457 out of 3,072 (80%) DArT clones were assigned to the genomic scaffolds of B. rapa (A genome) and B. oleracea (C genome). These were used to orientate the genetic consensus map with the chromosomal sequences. The DArT markers showed linkage with previously identified non-DArT markers associated with qualitative and quantitative trait loci for plant architecture, phenological components, seed and oil quality attributes, boron efficiency, sucrose transport, male sterility, and race-specific resistance to blackleg disease. Conclusions: The DArT markers provide increased marker density across the B. napus genome. Most of the DArT markers represented on the current array were sequenced and aligned with the B. rapa and B. oleracea genomes, providing insight into the Brassica A and C genomes. This information can be utilised for comparative genomics and genomic evolution studies. In summary, this consensus map can be used to (i) integrate new generation markers such as SNP arrays and next generation sequencing data; (ii) anchor physical maps to facilitate assembly of B. napus genome sequences; and (iii) identify candidate genes underlying natural genetic variation for traits of interest.

Beschreibung: During Aug. 1st - Aug. 29th, 2022, 8 ozonesondes were successfully launched at Pengjia Islet, Taiwan (122°04’17” E, 25°37’46” N) to measure vertical ozone profiles up to 35 km. An ozone DIAL lidar was operated at Academia Sinica in Taipei City, Taiwan (25.040°N, 121.614°E, about 80 km southwest of Pengjia Islet) to continuously measure ozone profile up to 12 km. Ozonesondes launched by the CWB, Taiwan during 1992-2011 are also presented for comparison. The lowest ozone concentration usually occurred around cold point tropopause around 17.5km. The ozone concentration observed in Aug. 2022 in general was in the range of ozone observed during 1992-2011. No significant ozone abundance is observed in the UT/LS region. On Aug. 1st and 12th, significant low ozone episodes (about 0.5mPa and 0.8mPa) were found at 10km-16km and 9km-12km, respectively. These two ozone deficiencies might be owing to ozone quenching processes and HYSPLIT back-trajectory analysis indicated the air parcels passed northeast of the Philippines on 7/31 and south of Japan on 8/10, respectively. On the other hand, several weak ozone abundant/deficient episodes were noticed in ozonesonde and ozone DIAL measurements in the UTLS and the low troposphere regions. Ozone concentrations are also noticed to tend to be weakly negatively correlated with RH. HYSPLIT analysis shows most of the air parcels' back-trajectory near the south of Japan or northeast of the Philippines.

Beschreibung: This book analyses the religious ideology of a Tamil reformer and saint, Ramalinga Swamigal of the 19th century and his posthumous reception in the Tamil country and sheds light on the transformation of Tamil religion that both his works and the understanding of him brought about. The book traces the hagiographical and biographical process by which Ramalinga Swamigal is shifted from being considered an exemplary poet-saint of the Tamil Śaivite bhakti tradition to a Dravidian nationalist social reformer. Taking as a starting point Ramalinga’s own writing, the book presents him as inhabiting a border zone between early modernity and modernity, between Hinduism and Christianity, between colonialism and regional nationalism, highlighting the influence of his teachings on politics, particularly within Dravidian cultural and political nationalism. Simultaneously, the book considers the implication of such an hagiographical process for the transformation of Tamil religion in the period between the 19th –mid-20th centuries. The author demonstrates that Ramalinga Swamigal’s ideology of compassion, cīvakāruṇyam, had not only a long genealogy in pre-modern Tamil Śaivism but also that it functioned as a potentially emancipatory ethics of salvation and caste critique not just for him but also for other Tamil and Dalit intellectuals of the 19th century. This book is a path-breaking study that also traces the common grounds between the religious visions of two of the most prominent subaltern figures of Tamil modernity – Iyothee Thass and Ramalingar. It argues that these transformations are one meaningful way for a religious tradition to cope with and come to terms with the implications of historicization and the demands of colonial modernity. It is, therefore, a valuable contribution to the field of religion, South Asian history and literature and Subaltern studies.
