    Description: High-melt areas of glaciers and ice sheets foster a rich spectrum of ambient seismicity. These signals not only shed light on source mechanisms (e.g. englacial fracturing, water flow, iceberg detachment, basal motion) but also carry information about seismic wave propagation within glacier ice. Here, we present two approaches to measure and potentially monitor phase velocities of high-frequency seismic waves (≥1 Hz) using naturally occurring glacier seismicity. These two approaches were developed for data recorded by on-ice seasonal seismic networks on the Greenland Ice Sheet and a Swiss Alpine glacier. The Greenland data set consists of continuous seismograms, dominated by long-term tremor-like signals of englacial water flow, whereas the Alpine data were collected in triggered mode producing 1–2 s long records that include fracture events within the ice (‘icequakes’). We use a matched-field processing technique to retrieve frequency-dependent phase velocity measurements for the Greenland data. In principle, this phase dispersion relationship can be inverted for ice sheet thickness and bed properties. For these Greenland data, inversion of the dispersion curve yields a bedrock depth of 541 m, which may be too small by as much as 35 per cent. We suggest that the discrepancy is due to lateral changes in ice sheet depth and bed properties beneath the network, which may cause unaccounted mixing of surface wave modes in the dispersion curve. The Swiss Alpine icequake records, on the other hand, allow for reconstruction of the impulse response between two seismometers. The direct and scattered wave fields from the vast numbers of icequake records (tens of thousands per month) can be used to measure small changes in englacial velocities and thus monitor structural changes within the ice.

    Description: Temporal changes in seismic anisotropy can be interpreted as variations in the orientation of cracks in seismogenic zones, and thus as variations in the stress field. Such temporal changes have been observed in seismogenic zones before and after earthquakes, although they are still not well understood. In this study, we investigate the azimuthal polarization of surface waves in anisotropic media with respect to the orientation of anisotropy, from a numerical point of view. This technique is based on the observation of the signature of anisotropy on the nine-component cross-correlation tensor (CCT) computed from seismic ambient noise recorded on pairs of three-component sensors. If noise sources are spatially distributed in a homogeneous medium, the CCT allows the reconstruction of the surface wave Green's tensor between the station pairs. In homogeneous, isotropic medium, four off-diagonal terms of the surface wave Green's tensor are null, but not in anisotropic medium. This technique is applied to three-component synthetic seismograms computed in a transversely isotropic medium with a horizontal symmetry axis, using a spectral element code. The CCT is computed between each pair of stations and then rotated, to approximate the surface wave Green's tensor by minimizing the off-diagonal components. This procedure allows the calculation of the azimuthal variation of quasi-Rayleigh and quasi-Love waves. In an anisotropic medium, in some cases, the azimuth of seismic anisotropy can induce a large variation in the horizontal polarization of surface waves. This variation depends on the relative angle between a pair of stations and the direction of anisotropy, the amplitude of the anisotropy, the frequency band of the signal and the depth of the anisotropic layer.

    Description: Very few causal genes have been identified by quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping because of the large size of QTL, and most of them were identified thanks to functional links already known with the targeted phenotype. Here, we propose to combine selection signature detection, coding SNP annotation, and cis -expression QTL analyses to identify potential causal genes underlying QTL identified in divergent line designs. As a model, we chose experimental chicken lines divergently selected for only one trait, the abdominal fat weight, in which several QTL were previously mapped. Using new haplotype-based statistics exploiting the very high SNP density generated through whole-genome resequencing, we found 129 significant selective sweeps. Most of the QTL colocalized with at least one sweep, which markedly narrowed candidate region size. Some of those sweeps contained only one gene, therefore making them strong positional causal candidates with no presupposed function. We then focused on two of these QTL/sweeps. The absence of nonsynonymous SNPs in their coding regions strongly suggests the existence of causal mutations acting in cis on their expression, confirmed by cis -eQTL identification using either allele-specific expression or genetic mapping analyses. Additional expression analyses of those two genes in the chicken and mice contrasted for adiposity reinforces their link with this phenotype. This study shows for the first time the interest of combining selective sweeps mapping, coding SNP annotation and cis -eQTL analyses for identifying causative genes for a complex trait, in the context of divergent lines selected for this specific trait. Moreover, it highlights two genes, JAG2 and PARK2 , as new potential negative and positive key regulators of adiposity in chicken and mice.

    Description: Noise-based seismology is proving to be a complementary approach to active-source or earthquake-based methods for imaging and monitoring the Earth’s interior. Until recently, however, noise-based imaging and monitoring relied mostly on the inversion of surface waves reconstructed from correlations of mostly microseismic seismic noise (around 5 s of period). Compared to body-wave tomography and considering similar wavelengths, surface-wave tomography succeeds in retrieving lateral subsurface velocity contrasts but is less efficient in resolving velocity perturbations at depth. Recently, the use of large- N seismic arrays has proven to be of great benefit for extracting body waves from noise correlations by stacking over a large number of receiver pairs and by applying array processing. In this article, we describe a recent large- N array experiment that we conducted on Piton de la Fournaise (PdF). Our main goal was to extract body waves traveling directly in the vicinity of the active magma reservoir located at ~2.5 km depth below the summit crater using noise correlations between arrays of seismic sensors. Within this article, we provide technical information about the VolcArray experiment, which consisted of the deployment of 300 seismic nodes during one month on PdF. We also present data-quality measurements and show how the short-period seismometers that we used compare to standard broadband seismic records. Finally, we show noise array beamforming results to study the content of seismic noise at frequencies between 1 and 12 Hz and discuss the ability to use these data to recover body waves between arrays from the correlation of ambient seismic noise.

    Description: We report experimental results on M-lines characterization of GaSb refractive index as a function of doping level and lattice mismatch in the range of 2.15–7.35  μ m with an accuracy of 10 −3 . We apply the same procedure to quaternary Al x Ga 1−x AsSb alloys lattice-matched to GaSb to study the refractive index evolution with aluminum fraction and with wavelength. We compare our measurements to theory, and we establish new parameter values for the dispersion law of GaSb. These parameters are confirmed by the excellent agreement between the calculated curves and experimental measurements performed on quaternary alloys. Using these values of optical indices, we design a GaSb/AlGaAsSb ridge waveguide and characterize the losses using the Fabry-Perot method at 2  μ m. Very low losses are demonstrated in the range of 1 dB/cm and below in a single mode waveguide structure.

    Description: The orogenic Anita Peridotite in Fiordland, SW New Zealand, provides an opportunity to examine the composition of a large block of upper mantle exhumed from beneath a Cretaceous arc. This little-studied 1 km x 20 km massif is dominated by spinel-facies harzburgite and dunite. Olivine Mg# of 92–93, spinel Cr# of ~70, orthopyroxene with low Al 2 O 3 , and extremely depleted whole-rock geochemical characteristics indicate that the peridotite body experienced 〉30% melt extraction, probably within the spinel facies. Mineral compositions show some similarity to those of cratonic peridotitic mantle. Rare Cr-rich amphibole suggests that the peridotite has been subsequently re-enriched. Distinctive, coupled Eu and Sr anomalies in the amphiboles, which can be subdivided into three groups, are interpreted to show that they formed by hydration of metasomatic clinopyroxene–plagioclase aggregates. Measured amphibole 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (~0·705–0·706), Nd (~ +6·3 to + 11·1), 208 Pb/ 204 Pb (~37·8–38·9) and Hf (~ +5·6 to 36·9) indicate that the metasomatic agent, which caused crystallization of clinopyroxene and plagioclase, had an isotopic composition similar to ocean island basalt. On the basis of isotopic data and mineral chemistry, the enriched nature of the peridotite is interpreted to have been caused by percolation of small volumes of a mafic silicate melt. Additional evidence for the passage of such melts is the rare occurrence of hornblendite veins and orthopyroxene hornblendite dykes. This peridotite body therefore preserves evidence of extreme melt depletion and the passage of silicate melts and hydrous fluids within the sub-arc mantle.

    Description: We present a new technique for deriving detailed information on seismic velocities of the subsurface material from continuous ambient noise recorded by spatially dense seismic arrays. This method uses iterative double beamforming between various subarrays to extract surface wave contributions from the ambient-noise data in complex environments with unfavourable noise-source distributions. The iterative double beamforming extraction makes it possible to retrieve large amounts of Rayleigh wave traveltime information in a wide frequency band. The method is applied to data recorded by a highly dense Nodal array with 1108 vertical geophones, centred on the damage zone of the Clark branch of the San Jacinto Fault Zone south of Anza, California. The array covers a region of ~650 x 700 m 2 , with instrument spacing of 10–30 m, and continuous recording at 500 samples s –1 over 30 d in 2014. Using this iterative double beamforming on subarrays of 25 sensors and cross-correlations between all of the station pairs, we separate surface waves from body waves that are abundant in the raw cross-correlation data. Focusing solely on surface waves, maps of traveltimes are obtained at different frequencies with unprecedented accuracy at each point of a 15-m-spacing grid. Group velocity inversions at 2–4 Hz reveal depth and lateral variations in the structural properties within and around the San Jacinto Fault Zone in the study area. This method can be used over wider frequency ranges and can be combined with other imaging techniques, such as eikonal tomography, to provide unprecedented detailed structural images of the subsurface material.

    Description: The mechanistic/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a conserved protein kinase that controls several anabolic processes required for cell growth and proliferation. As such, mTOR has been implicated in an increasing number of pathological conditions, including cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes and neurodegeneration. As part of the mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1), mTOR regulates cell growth by promoting the biosynthesis of proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Several mTORC1 substrates have been shown to regulate protein synthesis, including the eukaryotic initiation factor 4E (eIF4E)-binding proteins (4E-BPs) and the ribosomal S6 kinases (S6Ks) 1 and 2. In this work, we focus on the signalling pathways that lie both upstream and downstream of mTORC1, as well as their relevance to human pathologies. We further discuss pharmacological approaches that target mTOR and their applications for the treatment of cancer.
