    Description: Relativistic jets can form from at least some tidal disruption events (TDEs) of (sub-)stellar objects around supermassive black holes. We detect the millimetre (MM) emission of IGR J12580+0134 – the nearest TDE known in the galaxy NGC 4845 at the distance of only 17 Mpc, based on Planck all-sky survey data. The data show significant flux jumps after the event, followed by substantial declines, in all six high-frequency Planck bands from 100 to 857 GHz. We further show that the evolution of the MM flux densities is well consistent with our model prediction from an off-axis jet, as was initially suggested from radio and X-ray observations. This detection represents the second TDE with MM detections; the other is Sw J1644+57, an on-axis jetted TDE at redshift of 0.35. Using the on- and off-axis jet models developed for these two TDEs as templates, we estimate the detection potential of similar events with the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Assuming an exposure of 1 h, we find that the LMT (ALMA) can detect jetted TDEs up to redshifts z ~ 1 (2), for a typical disrupted star mass of ~1 M . The detection rates of on- and off-axis TDEs can be as high as ~0.6 (13) and 10 (220) yr –1 , respectively, for the LMT (ALMA). We briefly discuss how such observations, together with follow-up radio monitoring, may lead to major advances in understanding the jetted TDEs themselves and the ambient environment of the circumnuclear medium.

    Description: Paralia sulcata (Ehr.) Cleve, a common diatom microfossil species in shelf and adjacent deep-sea sediments, is becoming potentially useful in palaeoenvironmental reconstructions due to its coarsely silicified exoskeleton being well preserved in sediments. This paper presents the distributions of P. sulcata in sediment cores from the SE Asian marginal seas taken from formerly published and original materials. Paralia sulcata achieved variable abundance in the glacial–interglacial sediment analysed, showing spatial changes in the core profiles of the South China Sea, with lower abundances during the last glacial stage and higher values in the post-glacial. Conversely, in the East China Sea, it attains lower abundances during the Holocene, while higher ones in last glacial stage. Over a short timescale, variations in the abundance of this species responded quickly to the climatic and oceanographic fluctuations. We illustrate a ‘seesaw’ effect that its high abundances revealed in the East China Sea at 15–11 cal ka BP, whereas this occurred during period 11–8 cal ka BP in the South China Sea. The rapid increase in abundance of this species in the South China Sea is interpreted as an indication of a plausible link with the opening of the Taiwan Strait and the general coastal water circulation pattern during deglaciation.

    Description: 〈p〉Majorana zero modes (MZMs) are spatially-localized zero-energy fractional quasiparticles with non-Abelian braiding statistics that hold promise for topological quantum computing. Owing to the particle-antiparticle equivalence, MZMs exhibit quantized conductance at low temperature. By utilizing variable-tunnel-coupled scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we study tunneling conductance of vortex bound states on FeTe〈sub〉0.55〈/sub〉Se〈sub〉0.45〈/sub〉 superconductors. We report observations of conductance plateaus as a function of tunnel coupling for zero-energy vortex bound states with values close to or even reaching the 2〈i〉e〈/i〉〈sup〉2〈/sup〉/〈i〉h〈/i〉 quantum conductance (here 〈i〉e〈/i〉 is the electron charge and 〈i〉h〈/i〉 is Planck’s constant). In contrast, no plateaus were observed on either finite energy vortex bound states or in the continuum of electronic states outside the superconducting gap. This behavior of the zero-mode conductance supports the existence of MZMs in FeTe〈sub〉0.55〈/sub〉Se〈sub〉0.45〈/sub〉.〈/p〉

    Description: Human lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) has attracted attention as a potential target for cancer therapy and contraception. In this study, we reconstituted human lactic acid fermentation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae , with the goal of constructing a yeast cell-based LDH assay system. pdc null mutant yeast (mutated in the endogenous pyruvate decarboxylase genes) are unable to perform alcoholic fermentation; when grown in the presence of an electron transport chain inhibitor, pdc null strains exhibit a growth defect. We found that introduction of the human gene encoding LDHA complemented the pdc growth defect; this complementation depended on LDHA catalytic activity. Similarly, introduction of the human LDHC complemented the pdc growth defect, even though LDHC did not generate lactate at the levels seen with LDHA. In contrast, the human LDHB did not complement the yeast pdc null mutant, although LDHB did generate lactate in yeast cells. Expression of LDHB as a red fluorescent protein (RFP) fusion yielded blebs in yeast, whereas LDHA-RFP and LDHC-RFP fusion proteins exhibited cytosolic distribution. Thus, LDHB exhibits several unique features when expressed in yeast cells. Because yeast cells are amenable to genetic analysis and cell-based high-throughput screening, our pdc /LDH strains are expected to be of use for versatile analyses of human LDH.

    Description: Motivation: Biological molecules perform their functions through interactions with other molecules. Structure alignment of interaction interfaces between biological complexes is an indispensable step in detecting their structural similarities, which are key s to understanding their evolutionary histories and functions. Although various structure alignment methods have been developed to successfully access the similarities of protein structures or certain types of interaction interfaces, existing alignment tools cannot directly align arbitrary types of interfaces formed by protein, DNA or RNA molecules. Specifically, they require a ‘ blackbox preprocessing ’ to standardize interface types and chain identifiers. Yet their performance is limited and sometimes unsatisfactory. Results: Here we introduce a novel method, PROSTA-inter, that automatically determines and aligns interaction interfaces between two arbitrary types of complex structures. Our method uses sequentially remote fragments to search for the optimal superimposition. The optimal residue matching problem is then formulated as a maximum weighted bipartite matching problem to detect the optimal sequence order-independent alignment. Benchmark evaluation on all non-redundant protein – DNA complexes in PDB shows significant performance improvement of our method over TM-align and iAlign (with the ‘ blackbox preprocessing ’ ). Two case studies where our method discovers, for the first time, structural similarities between two pairs of functionally related protein – DNA complexes are presented. We further demonstrate the power of our method on detecting structural similarities between a protein – protein complex and a protein – RNA complex, which is biologically known as a protein – RNA mimicry case.
