Notes: Reintroduces alienation theory and research. Considers alienation in a cybernetic sense as a generic term for different types of information processing problems in individuals. Considers these, more often than not, to be ultimately caused by developments in their social environment and reflecting back on that environment. Discusses the emergence of virtual communities, giving as an example the Thematic Group on Sociocybernetics and Social Systems. Describes its function and composition in a virtual community context. Considers whether Norbert Wiener foresaw the emergence of virtual communities and examines the link with the society envisaged by Niklas Luhmann.

Notes: Provides definitions of the three concepts in the title and explores their interrelationships. Distinguishes six alienation dimensions - powerlessness; meaninglessness; normlessness; social isolation; cultural estrangement; self-estrangement - and combines them with three kinds of participation: spontaneous, negative, and compensatory. Describes increasing societal complexity from a general systems perspective. Explores the psycho- and sociogenesis of unalienated as well as alienated participation. Increasing societal complexity creates new forms of alienation and participation, but also resistances of groups that feel threatened or left out by an excessively fast rate of change, which in turn threatens macro-societal stability. Those left without the means to participate in the economic or political process tend to be the alienated "negative participants"; they are generally destructive and anti-outgroup as a result of personal experiences or economic deprivation.

Notes: Aims to analyse the influence of Norbert Wiener's ideas on the social sciences and on social systems, including society as a whole. Describes Wiener's own attitudes regarding the applicability of cybernetics to social systems and his vision on the development of modern society. Highlights sociologists and political scientists who were inspired by his ideas and deals with researchers who tried to apply his ideas to social systems. Concludes by evaluating to what extent specific ideas of Wiener have impacted on the social sciences.

Notes: Summarizes some of the important concepts and developments in cybernetics and general systems theory, especially during the last two decades. Shows how they can indeed be a challenge to sociological thinking. Cybernetics is used here as an umbrella term for a great variety of related disciplines: general systems theory, information theory, system dynamics, dynamic systems theory, including catastrophe theory, chaos theory. Also considers the emerging "science of complexity", which includes neural networks, artificial intelligence and artificial life, and discusses the methodological drawbacks of second-order cybernetics.

Description: The richly fossiliferous Ekspedition Bræ Formation of North Greenland yields a typical oligospecific fossil assemblage with well-preserved trilobites, helcionelloids, and lingulate brachiopods. The trilobites include Itagnostus subhastatus new species, Itagnostus sp. cf. I . gaspensis (Rasetti, 1948), Elrathina aphrodite new species, Elrathina athena new species, Elrathina hera new species, and Elrathia groenlandica new species—a fossil assemblage typical of the Bathyuriscus - Elrathina Zone as known from the Cordilleran regions of Laurentia. Excellent preservation allows a detailed assessment of the prosopon and elucidates aspects of the ontogenetic development of Elrathina and Elrathia . An evaluation of Elrathina includes a redescription of its type species, E . cordillerae (Rominger, 1887), based on the type material, and indicates that most specimens collected from the Burgess Shale and previously dealt with as E . cordillerae represent a new species.

Description: New finds of the trilobitesCobboldites tichkaensisGeyer, 1988,Pseudocobboldia pulchra(Hupé, 1953),Protolenus(Protolenus)densigranulatusGeyer, 1990,Latoucheia(Latoucheia)tichkaensisHupé, 1953, andAcanthomicmacca neltneriHupé, 1953, from the basal Middle Cambrian near the peak of Tizi n'Tichka in the central High Atlas, Morocco, supplement the known morphology of these species; the trilobitesAcanthomicmaccanew species,Oreisator tichkaensisnew genus and species, and“Parasolenopleura”sp. from that locality are new.Acanthomicmacca neltneriis the first species of the genus and family that is described and figured in detail in terms of morphologic plasticity and ontogeny;Oreisator tichkaensisis the first ptychopariacean trilobite formally described and based on material from Africa. Trilobites and other fossils from the locality suggest a strong affinity to other Mediterranean and to Avalonian faunas, which is well supported by helcionelloid and hyolith genera.

Description: Previously undescribed Holmiidae from the Sectigena Zone of Morocco indicate correlation of this zone with other zones bearing Holmiidae on Baltica, Avalonia, Siberia, and Laurentia. The occurrence of the youngest Antatlasiinae in the Sectigena Zone and the oldest Protoleninae in the overlying Hupeolenus Zone suggests correlations of the Sectigena Zone with upper Atdabanian beds bearing the youngest Antatlasiinae and the Hupeolenus Zone with Botomian beds bearing the oldest Protoleninae in Siberia. The occurrence, in the overlying Hupeolenus and Cephalopyge Zones, of Paradoxides s.l. in association with the olenelloid Cambropallas and with trilobites characteristic of the Lower Cambrian “Protolenus” Zone of Avalonia calls into question the major criteria for recognition of strata of Early and Middle Cambrian age. New taxa include lyouella contracta n. gen. and sp. of the Holmiidae and Bondonella sdzuyi n. sp. of the Neltneriidae. The known species of Neltneria, N. jacqueti and N. termieri, are revised.

Description: A fragmentary and probably immature polyplacophoran shell from the Middle Triassic Germanic Muschelkalk is presented. Morphological peculiarities of the specimen are a stiff connection of the head valve to the adjoining intermediate valve and the presence of a yet undescribed brim-like shell constituent, informally called border-plate herein. The unusually well-preserved shell structure is discussed in detail comprising tegmentum, crossed-lamellar p. hypostracum and the (articulamental?) border-plate. Characteristics indicate a systematic position within the order Lepidopleurina.
