    Description: New unfilled tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) oxides, Ba 5−5x Sm 5x Ti 5x Nb 10−5x O 30 (BSTN-x), where 0.10 ≤ x ≤ 0.35, have been synthesized in this work. Their crystal structure was determined and analyzed based on Rietveld structural refinement. It is found that single TTB phase can be formed in a particular x range (i.e., 0.15 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) due to the competition interaction between tolerance factor and electronegativity difference. Furthermore, dielectric and ferroelectric results indicate that phase transitions and ferroelectric states are sensitive to x. Referring to the local chemistry, we suggest that the raise of vacancies at the A 2 -site compared with that of A 1 -site will intensely depress the normal ferroelectric phase and is in favor of relaxor ferroelectric state. Macroscopically, previous A-site size difference standpoint on fill TTB compounds cannot give a reasonable explanation about the variation of dielectric maximum temperature (T m ) for present BSTN-x compounds. Alternatively, tetragonality (c/a) is adopted which can well describe the variation of T m in whole x range. In addition, one by one correspondence between tetragonality and electrical features can be found, and the compositions involving high c/a are usually stabilized in normal ferroelectric phase. It is believed that c/a is a more appropriate parameter to illustrate the variation of ferroelectric properties for unfilled TTB system.

    Description: The spin and orbital magnetic moments of the Fe 3 O 4 epitaxial ultrathin film synthesized by plasma assisted simultaneous oxidization on MgO(100) have been studied with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The ultrathin film retains a rather large total magnetic moment, i.e., (2.73 ± 0.15)  μ B /f.u., which is ∼70% of that for the bulk-like Fe 3 O 4 . A significant unquenched orbital moment up to 0.54 ± 0.05  μ B /f.u. was observed, which could come from the symmetry breaking at the Fe 3 O 4 /MgO interface. Such sizable orbital moment will add capacities to the Fe 3 O 4 -based spintronics devices in the magnetization reversal by the electric field.

    Description: The effect of Sr concentration on the planar Hall effect (PHE) in epitaxial magnetic phase separated La 1− x Sr x CoO 3 (0.07 ≤  x  ≤ 0.60) thin films was studied systematically. It was found that crystalline anisotropy and spin-orbital coupling are the main contributions to the unexpected fourfold symmetric PHE. The uniaxial anisotropy field was given by H uni  = 70 Oe and cubic anisotropic field H cub  = 143 Oe, respectively. The magnetic anisotropy was weakened by Sr doping, which corresponds with the disappearance of the fourfold symmetry in PHE with the increasing Sr concentration. The first principle calculations proved that the contribution of Co- d orbitals to the magnetic anisotropy strongly depends on the Sr concentration. e g − d x 2 − y 2 and e g − d 3 z 2 − r 2 orbitals play a dominant role in the magnetic anisotropy of the samples with x  = 0.125, 0.25, while the t 2 g − d x y ,   d y z ,   d x z orbitals contribute mainly to the magnetic anisotropy of the samples with x  = 0.375, 0.5, 0.625.

    Description: The effect of external strain on the non-linear electromechanical behavior of a ferroelectric poly-crystal is investigated under different applied electric fields by using a phase field model. Simulation results show that the domain switching induced by electric field under a tensile strain is much easier than that under a compressive strain, which is attributed to that a multi-domain structure can be more easily formed under the tensile strain than in the case of compressive strain when the electric field is absent. It is also found that a compressive misfit strain increases the macroscopic coercive field and remnant polarization while a tensile misfit strain decreases both of them. In addition, a compressive strain decreases the non-linear dielectric constant while a tensile strain increases it.

    Description: A simple model for the generation and amplification of intrinsic axial flow in a linear device, controlled shear decorrelation experiment, is proposed. This model proposes and builds upon a novel dynamical symmetry breaking mechanism, using a simple theory of drift wave turbulence in the presence of axial flow shear. This mechanism does not require complex magnetic field structure, such as shear, and thus is also applicable to intrinsic rotation generation in tokamaks at weak or zero magnetic shear, as well as to linear devices. This mechanism is essentially the self-amplification of the mean axial flow profile, i.e., a modulational instability. Hence, the flow development is a form of negative viscosity phenomenon. Unlike conventional mechanisms where the residual stress produces an intrinsic torque, in this dynamical symmetry breaking scheme, the residual stress induces a negative increment to the ambient turbulent viscosity. The axial flow shear is then amplified by this negative viscosity increment. The resulting mean axial flow profile is calculated and discussed by analogy with the problem of turbulent pipe flow. For tokamaks, the negative viscosity is not needed to generate intrinsic rotation. However, toroidal rotation profile gradient is enhanced by the negative increment in turbulent viscosity.

    Description: We demonstrate photon-noise limited performance at sub-millimeter wavelengths in feedhorn-coupled, microwave kinetic inductance detectors made of a TiN/Ti/TiN trilayer superconducting film, tuned to have a transition temperature of 1.4 K. Micro-machining of the silicon-on-insulator wafer backside creates a quarter-wavelength backshort optimized for efficient coupling at 250  μ m. Using frequency read out and when viewing a variable temperature blackbody source, we measure device noise consistent with photon noise when the incident optical power is 〉0.5 pW, corresponding to noise equivalent powers 〉 3 × 10 − 17   W / Hz . This sensitivity makes these devices suitable for broadband photometric applications at these wavelengths.

    Description: We report the metal organic chemical vapor deposition growth of dislocation-free 100 nm thick hexagonal InGaN nanopyramid arrays with up to 33% of indium content by nano-selective area growth on patterned AlN/Si (111) substrates. InGaN grown on SiO 2 patterned templates exhibit high selectivity. Their single crystal structure is confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscope combined with an energy dispersive X-ray analysis, which also reveals the absence of threading dislocations in the InGaN nanopyramids due to elastic strain relaxation mechanisms. Cathodoluminescence measurements on a single InGaN nanopyramid clearly show an improvement of the optical properties when compared to planar InGaN grown under the same conditions. The good structural, morphological, and optical quality of the InGaN nanostructures grown on AlN/Si indicates that the nano-selective area growth technology is attractive for the realization of site-controlled indium-rich InGaN nanostructure-based devices and can also be transferred to other highly mismatched substrates.

    Description: A global many-body expansion potential energy surface is reported for the electronic ground state of CH 2 + by fitting high level ab initio energies calculated at the multireference configuration interaction level with the aug-cc-pV6Z basis set. The topographical features of the new global potential energy surface are examined in detail and found to be in good agreement with those calculated directly from the raw ab initio energies, as well as previous calculations available in the literature. In turn, in order to validate the potential energy surface, a test theoretical study of the reaction CH + ( X 1 Σ + ) + H ( 2 S ) → C + ( 2 P ) + H 2 ( X 1 Σ g + ) has been carried out with the method of time dependent wavepacket on the title potential energy surface. The total integral cross sections and the rate coefficients have been calculated; the results determined that the new potential energy surface can both be recommended for dynamics studies of any type and as building blocks for constructing the potential energy surfaces of larger C + /H containing systems.

    Description: We present unusual high hardness (up to 7.7 GPa) achieved in Cu/Al multilayers relative to monolithic Cu and Al films (∼2 GPa and ∼1 GPa, respectively). Nanotwins and stacking faults (SFs) were proposed to be the main contributors of hardness enhancement, especially when h 〈 5 nm. Using molecular dynamics simulations of deposition, we demonstrated that intermixing near Cu/Al interface was paramount in stabilizing the SFs in both Cu and Al layers. Our experimental results indicated that the high strength caused by layer intermixing was in sharp contrast to the general belief that only sharp interface structures could strengthen the multilayers.

    Description: The gyro-monotron and gyrotron backward-wave oscillator (gyro-BWO) are the two oscillator versions of gyrotrons. While serving different functions, they are also radically different in the RF field formation mechanisms. The gyro-monotron RF field profile is essentially fixed by the resonant interaction structure, while the gyro-BWO possesses an extra degree of freedom in that the axial RF field profile is self-determined by the beam-wave interaction in a waveguide structure. The present study examines ways to utilize the latter feature for bandwidth broadening with a tapered magnetic field, while also employing a tapered waveguide to enhance the interaction efficiency. We begin with a mode competition analysis, which suggests the theoretical feasibility of broadband frequency tuning in single-mode operation. It is then shown in theory that, by controlling the RF field profile with an up- or down-tapered magnetic field, the gyro-BWO is capable of efficient operation with a much improved tunable bandwidth.
