Notizen: Abstract Along the coast of East and South India, a slow and minor sea level fall as an immediate response to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) followed by strong aridity and fast retreat of the sea to the outer shelf are indicated by coastal ironstones, traces of channels in nearshore shallow seismic reflectors, and submerged, structureless, multimineral placer sands. Nearshore peat beds and inland beach ridges reflect perturbations during Early to Mid-Holocene sea level rise. The Little Ice Age witnessed shifts in littoral sediment budget, possibly as a result of reduced transport of sediments from the Himalaya to the Bay of Bengal.

Notizen: The knowledge-based facility planning (KBFP) problem is reviewed. The aim of KBFP is to provide a more comprehensive planning package for users so that their expertise can be augmented with proven knowledge, and yield significantly better plans. The categories reviewed include facilities equipment selection, software model selection, and the generative task of creating a facility planning solution. The employed problem representation and problem-solving techniques are reviewed. Finally, the development of an integrated framework for KBFP is discussed.

Notizen: Poly(4,4′-thiodiphenyl phthalates) (iso/tere) have been synthesized using both low temperature step-growth and phase-transfer catalyzed polymerization techniques. These polymers were characterized using conventional techniques like elemental analysis, solubility characteristics, X-ray diffraction, infrared, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. 4,4′-Thiodiphenyl dibenzoate was used as a model compound.

Notizen: In this paper, a new formulation for two-dimensional time-domain transient elastodynamic analysis by the Boundary Element Method (BEM) is presented. The traction kernel is derived by using the causality of the waves and the resulting kernel is explicit and much simpler than the ones that have appeared in the recent literature. An appropriate set of linear time interpolation functions together with quadratic spatial variations are incorporated. Moreover, the algorithm has a capability of handling problems with multiply connected regions. All of these advanced features have resulted in an efficient formulation capable of producing very accurate results and represent significant improvements over the present level of sophistication in this area. This above algorithm is now a part of the general purpose BEM code known as GPBEST.

Notizen: The boundary element method is applied to transient viscous incompressible flow. The time-domain formulation allows a boundary-only solution for linear Stokes flow. For higher speed flows in which the non-linear convective effects cannot be ignored, a volume integral must be retained. However, the introduction of reference velocities often limits the non-linear region to the vicinity of obstacles or bounding surfaces. Additionally, the volume terms are rewritten to eliminate the need for the calculation of velocity gradients. A general purpose numerical implementation of this new formulation then produces a very attractive tool for engineering analysis. This implementation includes a Newton-Raphson algorithm, permitting accurate solutions up to the moderate Reynolds number range. Several numerical examples are provided to validate the present approach.

Notizen: In practical applications, it is often necessary to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a solid, in addition to the static response under a variety of loading conditions. This paper discusses the calculation of natural frequencies and mode shapes of three-dimensional solids using the boundary element method. The method developed is based on the use of particular integrals of the elastic equilibrium equations, and employs only real arithmetic. It represents an extension to three dimensions of work previously carried out for two-dimensional problems in References 1 and 15. The method has been incorporated, for multiregion analysis, in the BEST3D (Boundary Element Solution Technology - Three Dimensional) computer program.Much of the work described in this paper was carried out under the support of National Aeronautics and Space Administration Contract NAS3-23697, ‘3D Inelastic Analysis Methods for Hot Section Components’. The program managers at the NASA-Lewis Research Center are Dr C. C. Chamis and Mr Dale Hopkins. The program manager at Pratt & Whitney is Dr E. S. Todd Results of the boundary element calculations are compared with analytical, finite element and experimental results.

Notizen: An advanced boundary element method (BEM) is presented for the transient heat conduction analysis of engineering components. The numerical implementation necessarily includes higher-order conforming elements, self-adaptive integration and a multiregion capability. Planar, three-dimensional and axisymmetric analyses are all addressed with a consistent time-domain convolution approach, which completely eliminates the need for volume discretization for most practical analyses. The resulting general purpose algorithm establishes BEM as an attractive alternative to the more familiar finite difference and finite element methods for this class of problems. Several detailed numerical examples are included to emphasize the accuracy, stability and generality of the present BEM., Furthermore, a new efficient treatment is introduced for bodies with embedded holes. This development provides a powerful analytical tool for transient solutions of components, such as casting moulds and turbine blades, which are cumbersome to model when employing the conventional domain-based methods.
