    Description: The diagnosis of gastrointestinal graft versus host disease (GI-GVHD) is based on clinical symptoms and histological findings. In clinical practice, it is often difficult to decide whether abdominal symptoms in an allogeneic transplant recipient are caused by GVHD or other disorders. Endoscopic biopsies are helpful in establishing the diagnosis, but endoscopy is not always possible to perform due to poor general condition of the patients. No biomarkers are routinely used to predict GVHD. The aim of fecal calprotectin and alpha-1 antitrypsin testing in our study was to find out whether determination of the concentrations of these proteins may be used as a screening method for enteric GVHD. We studied prospectively 51 patients, 8 of whom developed GI-GVHD. Our data demonstrate that elevated fecal calprotectin levels were significantly associated with presence of GI-GVHD. We found a positive association between high F-calprotectin and severe gastrointestinal GVHD. In bivariate analysis, only calprotectin but not alpha-1 antitrypsin was independently associated with GI-GVHD. Testing for fecal calprotectin after allogeneic stem cell transplantation may be a useful screening tool. Scientific Reports 5 doi: 10.1038/srep07920

    Description: An object-based method for automatic iceberg detection from Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) images has been developed and applied in the Amundsen Sea, Antarctica. The automatic identification is based on brightness and spatial parameters of the ASAR images at five scale levels, and was verified with manual classification in four areas chosen to represent varying environmental conditions. The presented algorithm works comparatively well with images of the ocean in freezing temperatures and strong wind conditions, common in the Amundsen Sea. The detection rate was 96.2% which corresponds to 93.2% of the icebergs area, for all seasons. The algorithm generated 3.8% errors in the form of 'misses' and 7.0% of 'false alarms', mainly caused by the presence of ice floes. The method was applied on 432 radar images acquired in 2011 under different meteorological, oceanographic and sea ice conditions. As an output a map showing the probability of finding icebergs has been created. It shows that high probability coincides with depth contours and indicates a westward drift of the bergs throughout the whole region.

    Notes: Summary Of 23 patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), whose fasting blood glucose had not reached ≤6.0 mmol·l−1 after 10 weeks of dietary regulation, 15, who had had a weight reduction of −2.8 kg by dietary control, did achieve a fasting blood glucose ≤6.0 mmol·l−1 after addition of ≤20 mg glipizide daily. They had a sustained (≥2 years) increase in meal-induced insulin secretion (32% increase in postprandial C-peptide AUC), and a sustained reduction in postprandial hyperglycaemia (34% reduction in AUC). Ten of the patients took a mean daily dose 〈5mg (4.8 mg) and had a sustained increase in insulin secretion rate (increased C-peptide slope). The 15 patients had no elevation of basal insulin secretion and no impairment of weight reduction. The remaining 8 subjects, who showed little or no weight reduction on dietary control, had little or no reduction in fasting blood glucose despite long-term treatment with 20 mg glipizide daily, a less sustained increase in meal-induced insulin secretion, a smaller reduction of postprandial hyperglycaemia, and an increase in body weight. On diagnosis the 8 subjects did not differ from the other 15 subjects in age, body weight, blood glucose, HbA1c, C-peptide or insulin, nor in their glucose and insulin responses to a test dose of glipizide; the main reason for the apparent drug failure appeared to be deficient compliance with dietary regulation rather than a primary inability to respond to sulphonylurea treatment. The findings indicate that glipizide is able to promote and maintain increased meal-induced insulin secretion and near-normal fasting and non-fasting blood glucose levels without continuous B cell stimulation. However, these improvements prevail mainly in subjects who persist with hypocaloric dietary regulation.

    Notes: We have measured the conversion efficiency, as well as the spectral and temporal x-ray output of H- and He-like carbon line emission, from a thin foil of polypropylene that has been irradiated with subpicosecond KrF laser pulses.     Notes: We have developed a real-time charged particle beam probe which can be used both as a beam diagnostic (beam tuning) and to quantitatively determine the three-dimensional density distribution of a beam. The probe consists of a microchannel plate, an aluminized phosphor screen deposited on a fiber-optic faceplate, a flexible fiber-optic bundle, and a charge injection device (CID) in tandem. Digital or analog video output of the CID is fed into a computer or oscilloscope, respectively, for analysis or observation. The probe can be moved continuously along the beams' paths to obtain "pictures'' of the beam at any desired interval thus giving three- dimensional form factors. Either beam singly or both beams simultaneously may be observed on the monitor facilitating the task of beam adjustment for optimum overlap. The digital output is used for quantitative computation of the beam overlaps. The device is linear with beam intensity, but the performance degrades with time due to beam damage of the microchannel plate.

    Notes: We have studied the interaction of 290-fs, 308-nm laser pulses with aluminum targets at irradiances exceeding 5×1018 W/cm2. The x-ray spectrum is dominated by the H- and He-like lines from aluminum, with the brightest lines radiating 0.8% of the incident laser light energy. This fraction is close to that measured at 50 times less irradiance, but occurs at a slightly higher ionization stage. The x rays are emitted from a region of subcritical electron density at 3–6×1021 W cm−3. The radiance of the 1.73-keV Lα line is measured to be 4×1012 W/cm2/sr.

    Notes: Abstract For the first time absolute total cross sections for electron-impact excitation of a multiply-charged ion have been measured using an electron-energy-loss technique. Measurements were made near threshold for the process e + Si3+ (3s2S1/2) → e + Si3+ (3p2P1/2,3/2) - 8.88 eV. The 10−15 cm2 measured cross section agrees with results of 7-state close coupling calculations to better than the ±20% (90% CL) total uncertainty of the measurements. Convoluting the theoretical curve with a Gaussian energy distribution indicates an energy width of 0.15 ≲ ΔE ≲ 0.20 eV.
