In:  Guangmeng, G. and Jie, Y.: Three attempts of earthquake prediction with satellite cloud images, Nat. Hazards Earth Syst. Sci., 13, 91–95, doi:10.5194/nhess-13-91-2013, 2013.
    Publication Date: 2017-04-04
Description: Several recently published reports have suggested that semi-stationary linear-cloud formations might be causally precursory to earthquakes. We examine the report of Guangmeng and Jie (2013), who claim to have predicted the 2012 M6:0 earthquake in the Po Valley of northern Italy after seeing a satellite photograph (a digital image) showing a linear-cloud formation over the eastern Apennine Mountains of central Italy. From inspection of 4 years of satellite images we find numerous examples of linear-cloud formations over Italy. A simple test shows no obvious statistical relationship between the occurrence of these cloud formations and earthquakes that occurred in and around Italy. All of the linearcloud formations we have identified in satellite images, including that which Guangmeng and Jie (2013) claim to have used to predict the 2012 earthquake, appear to be orographic – formed by the interaction of moisture-laden wind flowing over mountains. Guangmeng and Jie (2013) have not clearly stated how linear-cloud formations can be used to predict the size, location, and time of an earthquake, and they have not published an account of all of their predictions (including any unsuccessful predictions). We are skeptical of the validity of the claim by Guangmeng and Jie (2013) that they have managed to predict any earthquakes.

Notes: CO adsorption on Ni{110} and on hydrogen precovered Ni{110} surfaces at 180 K has been studied by FT-RAIRS. On a clean Ni{110} surface CO adsorbs at on-top sites upto a coverage of 0.7 ML. At higher coverages the on-top CO band at 2060 cm−1 decreases in intensity with a concomitant increase in a band at 1960 cm−1 which shifts up in frequency. The (2×1)p2mg structure at 1.0 ML CO coverage shows a single band at 1998 cm−1 attributed to CO tilted at bridged sites. FT-RAIRS of CO adsorption on H precovered Ni{110} surfaces shows complex CO site switching within different CO and H coverage regimes. A model is presented involving compression of H into islands of high coverage and both mixed H and CO and unmixed CO islands are formed. CO adsorbs in the unmixed CO islands the same as that on clean Ni{110}. Within the mixed H/CO islands the first layer nickel atoms reconstruct and a new hydrogen desorption state is observed. The CO site switching observed by FT-RAIRS within the various H and CO coverage regimes is discussed in terms of a dominant indirect interaction.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the design features of adiabatic, weakly guiding optical fibre tapers for nonlinear device applications. In general, where the fibre taper ‘core’ and ‘cladding’ are of different material nonlinearities, the nonlinear effects that can be achieved depend critically on the taper parameters. For optical switches a suitable choice of taper parameters minimizes the power × length product for nonlinear operation. The maximum effective utilization of the nonlinear cladding material was found to be 21.3%. Also, nonlinear effects can be totally suppressed with an appropriate choice of design, enabling nonlinear effects that are undesirable in some applications to be avoided.

Notes: Abstract The excess loss across an acute-angle symmetric X-junction composed of two weakly guiding single-mode buried channel waveguides of square core cross-section is shown to be very small provided the junction angle is greater than a few degrees. Numerical and approximate analytical results are presented, as well as a simple criterion for the onset of cross-talk as the junction angle decreases.

Notes: Abstract Anomolous spikes in the loss spectrum of practical depressed-cladding fibres with a finite cladding and absorbing jacket can be explained in terms of a combination of three effects — the excitation conditions, the absorption behaviour of core and cladding modes, and the slight variation in the fibre diameter along its length.

Notes: Abstract We quantify the magnitude of the power loss incurred when a square-core buried channel waveguide (BCW) is spliced to a standard circular-core telecommunications fibre. With a view to minimizing the dissipated power, we show that a simple equal-core-area criterion provides an elegant means of determining the optimum core dimensions. This result is found to hold for more general BCW cross-sections that possess a reasonable degree of symmetry. The fundamental problems of waveguide misalignment and angular tilt are also investigated and their effect on splice loss is quantified. Our theoretical model is applied to both single- and twin-core waveguides.

Notes: Abstract Although much has been written about the impact of funding cuts on UK universities, very little work has been carried out to estimate the effects of these cuts on the local economies in which the universities are located. This paper seeks to identify changes in the funding of three Scottish universities which can be traced directly to central government, and to quantify the wider economic effects of these changes. Significant effects are estimated, which form the unintended consequences of government policy on higher education.
