    Description: Simulations of the global climate system at storm-resolving resolutions of 2 km are now becoming feasible and show promising realism in clouds and precipitation. However, shortcomings in their representation of microscale processes, like the interaction of cloud droplets and ice crystals with radiation, can still restrict their utility. Here, we illustrate how changes to the ice microphysics scheme dramatically alter both the vertical profile of cloud-radiative heating and top-of-atmosphere outgoing longwave radiation (terrestrial infrared cooling) in storm-resolving simulations over the Asian monsoon region. Poorly-constrained parameters in the ice nucleation scheme, overactive conversion of ice to snow, and inconsistent treatment of ice crystal effective radius between microphysics and radiation alter cloud-radiative heating by a factor of four and domain-mean infrared cooling by 30 W m−2. Vertical resolution, on the other hand, has a very limited impact. Even in state-of-the-art models then, uncertainties in microscale cloud properties exert a strong control on the radiative budget that propagates to both atmospheric circulation and regional climate. These uncertainties need to be reduced to realize the full potential of storm-resolving models.

    Description: Ziele der vorliegenden Arbeit waren die Entwicklung neuer und die Optimierung bereits angewendeter Methoden für eine dauerhafte ex-situ Kultivierung von Schwämmen als Lieferanten von pharmakologisch interessanten Naturstoffen. Verschiedene Kultivierungsparameter wurden hinsichtlich ihrer Auswirkungen auf die Vitalität und das Wachstum der Schwämme analysiert und vier Kultivierungsansätze getestet: Schwammfragmente, multizelluläre Reaggregate, Gemmulae & die Immobilisierung von Schwammzellen.

    Description: Dieser Beitrag bietet eine Deutung dessen, worum es sich beim Anthropozän handelt: nämlich um eine geistige Umweltkrise. Zu diesem Zweck wird das Anthropozän zunächst in gebotener Kürze als Umweltkrise dargestellt. Darauf folgt die Skizze einer Krise, die als eine Krise der Geistlosigkeit erscheinen könnte, da sie sich mit „Anti-Universalismus“ und „logischer Narzissmus“ charakterisieren lässt. Das führt zu der Frage, was unter dem Geistigen zu verstehen ist, und diese Frage wird aus Gründen, die dabei plausibel werden sollen, im Rahmen eines undogmatischen Panpsychismus beantwortet. Diese Antwort hilft wiederum, geistige Aspekte des Anthropozäns zu würdigen, und mit dem so ermöglichten Verständnis dieser Zeit als geistiger Umweltkrise ist das angestrebte Ziel erreicht.

Mit dem Überführen des Sterbens aus dem privaträumlichen Wohnumfeld in medizinische und pflegerische Institutionen wird ihre Gestaltung und Verortung im Kontext der gebauten Lebenswelt und im gesellschaftlichen Diskurs daher zur Architekturaufgabe. Katharina Voigt dokumentiert die typologische Genese von Sterbeorten, führt zeitgenössische künstlerische Positionen zur Körperlichkeit, Transformation und Räumlichkeit des Sterbens an und entwickelt daraus Grundlagen für ein angemessenes Raumgeben am Lebensende. In Gesprächen über das Sterben kommen Protagonist*innen unterschiedlicher Disziplinen zu Wort, darunter Barbara Camilla Tucholski, Charlotte Uzarewicz, Frère Alain Durand und Stefan Kaegi.     Description: This work presents three new quantitative methods for magnetic resonance imaging. A method for simultaneous mapping of B1 and T1 (MTM) is developed and validated. Electric Properties Tomography (EPT), a method for quantitative imaging of dielectric properties of tissue, is presented. Based on EPT, separate (phase-based) conductivity and (amplitude-based) permittivity measurements are introduced. Finally, a B1-based method for patient-specific local SAR measurements is presented.

    Description: Industrial performance optimization increasingly makes the use of various analytical data-driven models. In this context, modern machine learning capabilities to predict future production quality outcomes, model predictive control to better account for complex multivariable environments of process industry, Bayesian Networks enabling improved decision support systems for diagnostics and fault detection are some of the main examples to be named. The key challenge is to integrate these highly heterogeneous models in a holistic system, which would also be suitable for applications from the most different industries. Core elements of the underlying solution architecture constitute highly decoupled model microservices, ensuring the creation of largely customizable model runtime environments. Deployment of isolated user-space instances, called containers, further extends the overall possibilities to integrate heterogeneous models. Strong requirements on high availability, scalability, and security are satisfied through the application of cloud-based services. Tieto successfully applied the outlined approach during the participation in FUture DIrections for Process industry Optimization (FUDIPO), a project funded by the European Commission under the H2020 program, SPIRE-02-2016.

    Description: Using macro and firm-level data, this paper investigates the complementarities between investment in different types of tangible assets such as machinery and buildings, and intangible assets such as software, training of employees, and business process improvements. It finds that investment in different assets types tends to be complementary, improving firm performance. Policy measures should address investment bottlenecks arising from market imperfections, while leaving it to the firm to find the most appropriate mix of assets.

    Description: This work contributes to an improved understanding of the driving mechanisms of the upstream propagation of turbulent premixed flames in enclosed vortex tubes within stationary gas turbine combustion systems. For this purpose, a Flamelet approach based on coupling a transport equation of the flame surface density with the description of laminar Flamelets to turbulent conditions is developed. This coupled approach enables the deduction of an explanation of this flashback phenomenon.

    Description: This multi-disciplinary book conceptualizes, maps, and analyses ongoing standardization processes of risk issues across various sectors, processes, and practices. Standards are not only technical specifications and guidelines to support efficient risk governance, but also contain social, political, economic, and organizational aspects. This book presents a variety of standardization processes and applications of standards that may influence our judgements of risk, the organizing of risk governance, and, accordingly, our behaviour. Standardization and standards can impact risk governance in different ways. The most important lessons drawn from the present volume can be summarized in three areas: (1) how standardization might impact on power relations and interests; (2) how standardization may change flexibility in decision-making, communication, and cooperation; and (3) how standardization could (re)direct attention and risk perception. The volume’s aim is to present an analysis of standardization processes and how it affects our thinking about risk, how we organize risk governance, and how standardization may influence risk management. In so doing, it contributes to a more informed discourse regarding the use of standards and standardization in contemporary risk management. Standardization and Risk Governance will be of great interest to students of risk, standardization, global governance, and critical security studies.

Demnach fühlt es sich auf eine bestimmte Weise an, in einer technisch überformten Umwelt zu leben, und dies führt wiederum zu einer anti-universalistischen narzisstischen Verstimmung. Der davon begünstigte logische Narzissmus erschwert es, auf die Herausforderungen dieser im Wandel begriffenen Umwelt sinnvoll zu reagieren.
