Abstract: This comprehensive guide to potato production systems management contains 20 chapters and more than 350 color photographs. Beginning with the history of potato culture, it spans all aspects of potato production, pest and planting management, storage, and marketing. Written by a team of over 35 scientists from North America, this book offers updated research-based information and serves as a unique, valuable tool for researchers, extension specialists, students, and farm managers. More than a description of principles, it contains practical analytical tools, charts, and methods to create guidelines for best production practices and cost estimates. Some key areas include: Potato Growth and Development, Potato Variety Selection and Management, Seed and Planting Management, Seed Production and Certification, Field Selection, Crop Rotation, and Soil Management, Integrated Pest Management for Potatoes, Potato Nutrient Management, Irrigation Management, Tuber Quality, Economics and Marketing, Production Costs, among others. Potato Production Systems should be a valuable reference for successful culture of the "noble tuber.".

Description: Transatlantic democracy in the 20th century - this concept goes beyond the idea of an American civilizing mission in Europe after two World Wars, and certainly beyond the notion of re-educating Germans, and making them fit for Western institutions after Nazism. As democracy is being contested anew in the beginning of the 21st century, a much more complicated landscape of democracy since 1900 emerges. Transfer was not a one-way-street, and patterns of conflict and transformation affected both American and European political societies. American democracy may not be reduced to a resilient defense of original traditions, while the narrative of German democracy is more than redemption from catastrophe. The essays in this volume contribute to a new history of transatlantic democracy that accounts for its manifold experiences and constant renegotiations, up to the current challenges of American and European populism.

Description: Coastal salt marshes and their provided ecosystem services are threatened by rising sea levels all over the world. In the Northern Wadden Sea region, a sea-level rise of 4 mm y−1 was recorded for recent years. Identifying and understanding factors that affect sediment deposition and determine vertical accretion of salt marshes is crucial for the management of these ecosystems. Even though major processes contributing to sedimentation and accretion have already been identified, the influence of reduced canopy heights due to livestock grazing is still debated. On a highly anthropogenically altered marsh island in the Wadden Sea, sediment deposition, accretion and suspended sediment concentration was analyzed on grazed and adjacent ungrazed plots both at the marsh edge and at the marsh interior. Due to a low seawall (a so-called ‘summer dike’), flooding frequency on the island is reduced and flooding mainly takes place during storm surges. After five flooding events within a year, mean sediment deposition and accretion were found to be up to seven times higher on ungrazed plots compared to grazed plots, but only at the marsh edges. This result was not explained by the overmarsh suspended sediment concentration (SSC), which was found to be twice as high on grazed plots compared to ungrazed plots. It is concluded that grazing has a negative effect on sediment deposition and accretion on Wadden Sea marsh islands and areas with similar conditions (e.g. presence of a summer dike) by reducing the sediment trapping capacity of those marshes. Overall, vertical marsh accretion ranged from 0.11 ± 0.09 mm y−1 on a grazed plot at the marsh edge to 1.12 ± 0.71 mm y−1 on an ungrazed plot at the marsh edge. By increasing the discrepancy between accretion and sea-level rise, livestock grazing can lead to higher inundation levels and in turn to increased hydrodynamic forces acting on these anthropogenically altered marshes. Highlights • Accretion rates on a Wadden Sea marsh island cannot keep pace with rising sea level. • Ungrazed plots showed significantly higher sediment deposition and accretion rates. • Suspended sediment concentration was higher under grazing treatment. • Natural marsh vegetation is thought to have a considerable sediment trapping effect. • Accretion rates can be improved by abandonment of grazing.

Description: Highlights: • Pelvic brooding induces tissue-specific changes in gene expression • Inflammatory signaling characterizes transcriptome of the egg-anchoring plug • Similar to embryo implantation, the plug likely evolved from an inflammatory response • Mammalian placenta genes were independently co-opted into the plug Summary: The evolution of pregnancy exposes parental tissues to new, potentially stressful conditions, which can trigger inflammation.1 Inflammation is costly2,3 and can induce embryo rejection, which constrains the evolution of pregnancy.1 In contrast, inflammation can also promote morphological innovation at the maternal-embryonic interface as exemplified by co-option of pro-inflammatory signaling for eutherian embryo implantation.1,4,5 Given its dual function, inflammation could be a key process explaining how innovations such as pregnancy and placentation evolved many times convergently. Pelvic brooding ricefishes evolved a novel “plug” tissue,6,7 which forms inside the female gonoduct after spawning, anchors egg-attaching filaments, and enables pelvic brooders to carry eggs externally until hatching.6,8 Compared to pregnancy, i.e., internal bearing of embryos, external bearing should alleviate constraints on inflammation in the reproductive tract. We thus hypothesized that an ancestral inflammation triggered by the retention of attaching filaments gave rise to pathways orchestrating plug formation. In line with our hypothesis, histological sections of the developing plug revealed signs of gonoduct injuries by egg-attaching filaments in the pelvic brooding ricefish Oryzias eversi. Tissue-specific transcriptomes showed that inflammatory signaling dominates the plug transcriptome and inflammation-induced genes controlling vital processes for plug development such as tissue growth and angiogenesis were overexpressed in the plug. Finally, mammalian placenta genes were enriched in the plug transcriptome, indicating convergent gene co-option for building, attaching, and sustaining a transient tissue in the female reproductive tract. This study highlights the role of gene co-option and suggests that recruiting inflammatory signaling into physiological processes provides a fast-track to evolutionary innovation.

Description: The determination of thermal structure functions from transient thermal measurements using network identification by deconvolution is a delicate process as it is sensitive to noise in the measured data. Great care must be taken not only during the measurement process but also to ensure a stable implementation of the algorithm. In this paper, a method is presented that quantifies the absolute accuracy of network identification on the basis of different test structures. For this purpose, three measures of accuracy are defined. By these metrics, several variants of network identification are optimized and compared against each other. Performance in the presence of noise is analyzed by adding Gaussian noise to the input data. In the cases tested, the use of a Bayesian deconvolution provided the best results.
