Notizen: Abstract  Low loss, tunable dielectric materials are important for phased array antenna and other device applications. Various composites of barium strontium titanium oxide (BSTO) combined with other nonelectrically active oxide ceramics have been formulated for such uses. The dielectric constant and the loss tangents of these composites have been reduced to enhance the overall impedance matching and thereby lowering the overall insertion loss of the device. The material has been fabricated in bulk ceramic, thick film, and thin film form to address a broad range of frequency applications. The material fabrication methods and the electronic properties of these composites will be discussed in this article.

Notizen: Abstract Pelitic rocks were thermally metamorphosed at the contact of the Chimakurthy mafic-ultramafic igneous complex, Eastern Ghats Belt, India. The rocks show progressive change in mineralogy from biotite-sillimanite-quartz-garnet-K-feldspar (association I, 150 m from the intrusive contact) to garnet-spinel-cordierite-K-feldspar-sillimanite (association II, 20–30 m from the intrusive contact) to cordierite-K-feldspar-(cordierite-orthopyroxene-K-feldspar symplectite after osumilite)-spinel-FeTiAl oxides with/without garnet (associations III and IV, 5 m from the intrusive contact), and finally to spinel-orthopyroxene-cordierite-K-feldspar (association V, xenoliths). Oxide mineral clots in associations III and IV resemble emery-type rocks. Initial mineral reactions involved biotite-dehydration melting with partial segregation of the melt. Down-temperature mineral reactions were largely diffusion controlled and preservation of symplectitic and coronitic textures in microdomains is common. Interpretation of reaction textures in relevant petrogenetic grids for the sytems KFMASH and FMAS and combined with geothermobarometry suggest that the pelitic rocks were thermally metamorphosed at c. 6 kbar pressure along a heating-cooling trajectory within the temperature interval between c. 750 °C and c. 1000 °C.

Notizen: Abstract The computation of the orientational averages is a great problem in the case of semicrystalline polymers. In a previous communication [1] it has been shown that sinθ=f(λ) sinθ′ describes the orientational changes satisfactorily for a certain class of polymers. In this paper some alternative deformation schemes are also discussed. It has been concluded that birefringence provides a useful guideline in the choice of a deformation scheme.

Notizen: Abstract Two procedures for estimating initial states of a production line that ensure the line has a high probability of meeting the specified production target during a scheduled production shift are presented. The problem of determining desirable initial states is important in low variety, high volume production systems such as those from the automobile industry. One procedure is derived from design of experiments (DOE) theory whereas the other uses a genetic algorithm (GA). In the study it was determined that both procedures are straightforward to implement and produce good solutions to the problem. The results from the procedures are compared and their benefits and disadvantages are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract The withanolide Withaperuvin E, C28H36O8, has been obtained from the air dried roots of Physalis peruviana and purified by silica gel chromatography. This compound exhibits significant antineo plastic activity. Prismatic pale yellow crystals were obtained from a methanol/acetone solution. The compound crystallizes together with a partially occupied [40(1)%] acetic acid molecule, in space group P212121, Z = 4, D c = 1.242 g cm−3, with unit, cell parameters a = 11.431(3), b = 14.104(1), c = 17.387(5)Å, V = 2803.2(11)Å3, and μ(CuKα) = 0.072mm−1. Through the X-ray analysis the molecule was found to be comprised of a steroidal skeleton with a β-oriented oxygen bridging atoms C(5) and C(6) in ring B. Steroid ring conformations are: A sofa; B sofa; C chair; D intermediate half-chair/sofa; the lactone ring E has a sofa conformation. All rings of the steroid skeleton are trans connected. The absolute configuration of the Withaperuvin E skeleton corresponds to that of naturally occurring steroids, C(18) and C(19) both being β-oriented. The partially occupied acetic acid molecule forms a hydrogen bond to the steroid molecule. Hydrogen bonding also occurs between OH(14) and a symmetry related oxygen O(20) of the steroid.

Notizen: Abstract We investigate, for a given martingaleM={M n: n≥0}, the conditions for the existence of polynomialsP(·,·) of two variables, “time” and “space,” and of arbitrary degree in the latter, such that{P(n, M n)} is a martingale for the natural filtration ofM. Denoting by ℘ the vector space of all such polynomials, we ask, in particular, when such a sequence can be chosen so as to span ℘. A complete necessary and sufficient condition is obtained in the case whenM has independent increments. For generalM, we obtain a necessary condition which entails, under mild additional hypotheses, thatM is necessarily Markovian. Considering a slightly more general class of polynomials than ℘ we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions in the case of general martingales also. It is moreover observed that in most of the cases, the set ℘ determines the law of the martingale in a certain sense.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we consider a single server queue in which arrivals occur according to a Poisson process and each customer's service time is exponentially distributed. The server works according to the gated process-sharing discipline. In this discipline, the server provides service to a batch of at mostm customers at a time. Once a batch of customers begins service, no other waiting customer can receive service until all members of the batch have completed their service. For this queue, we derive performance characteristics, such as waiting time distribution, queue length distribution etc. For this queue, it is possible to obtain the mean conditional response time for a customer whose service time is known. This conditional response time is a nonlinear function (as opposed to the linear case for the ordinary processor-sharing queue). A special case of the queue (wherem=∞) has an interesting and unusual solution. For this special case, the size of the batch for service is a Markov chain whose steady state distribution can be explicitly written down. Apart from the contribution to the theory of Markov chains and queues, the model may be applicable to scheduling of computer and communication systems.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we characterize the queue-length distribution as well as the waiting time distribution of a single-server queue which is subject to service interruptions. Such queues arise naturally in computer and communication problems in which customers belong to different classes and share a common server under some complicated service discipline. In such queues, the viewpoint of a given class of customers is that the server is not available for providing service some of the time, because it is busy serving customers from a different class. A natural special case of these queues is the class of preemptive priority queues. In this paper, we consider arrivals according the Markovian Arrival Process (MAP) and the server is not available for service at certain times. The service times are assumed to have a general distribution. We provide numerical examples to show that our methods are computationally feasible.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, we consider a MAP/G/1 queue in which each customer arrives with a service and a space requirement, which could be dependent. However, the space and service requirements of different customers are assumed to be independent. Each customer occupies its space requirement in a buffer until it has completely received its service, at which time, it relinquishes the space it occupied. We study and solve the problem of finding the steady-state distribution of the total space requirement of all customers present in the system. In the process of doing so, we also generalize the solution of the MAP/G/1 queue and find the time-average joint distribution of the queue-length, the state of the arrival process and the elapsed service time, conditioned on the server being busy. This problem has applications to the design of buffer requirements for a computer or communication system.
