    Description: Soil profiles were collected along a transect across the Serengeti ecosystem, in Tanzania from 2-3S and 34-35.5E, 1153 to 1677 m above sea level and 0 to 1.6 m soil depth. The samples are modern soils and the temporal span of the soil depth profiles is unconstrained, likely centuries to millennia. The survey is intended to observe soil microbial lipid biomarkers that are commonly used as proxies for temperature and pH and to assess their robustness in alkaline carbonate-precipitating soil profiles, where soil carbonate proxies can also be applied. These modern calibrations can inform reconstructions of Eastern African paleoenvironments using the same proxies in geological archives. Lipid extractions and purifications were performed at USC in 2018-2019 and abundances of branched and isoprenoidal glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers were obtained by high pressure liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, performed in 2020-2021 at the University of Arizona. Contextual data include total dissolved solids and pH measurements at the University of Houston in 2020-2021.     Description: Size segregated aerosol samples were collected during the OASIS (“Organic very short lived substances and their Air Sea Exchange from the Indian Ocean to the Stratosphere”) cruises (FS Sonne, SO234-2 & SO235) during 8 - 20 July & 23 July – 7 August 2014 in the southern Indian Ocean (~30 E - 75 E, 30 S – 5 N). The samples were collected by Birgit Quack of GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany. The aerosol sampler was situated on the roof of the ship's wheelhouse and was connected to an automatic wind sector controller to prevent contamination of the samples from the ship's stack. Most samples were collected using a Sierra-type cascade impactor to separate the aerosol particles at an aerodynamic diameter cutoff of 1 µm. Collection time for these samples varied between 27.7 and 46.9 hours. For one sample, 6 impactor stages and a backup filter were used to give more detailed information aerosol size distribution. This sample was collected over 91.7 hours. Samples were extracted with ultrapure water and the major ions Na+, NH4+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, oxalate, Br- and methanesulfonate were determined by ion chromatography (IC). Total soluble iodine (TSI) was determined by inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and iodide (I-) and iodate (IO3-) were determined by IC-ICP-MS. The dataset contains the atmospheric concentrations of all measured soluble major ions (in nmol/m³) and iodine species (in pmol/ m³).

The samples were collected by Christian Müller, Sebastian Wache and Arne Lanatowitz of GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany. The aerosol sampler was situated on the roof of the ship's wheelhouse. Samples were collected using a Sierra-type cascade impactor to separate the aerosol particles at an aerodynamic diameter cutoff of 1 µm. Collection time for the samples varied between 20.3 and 26.8 hours. Samples were extracted with ultrapure water and the major ions Na+, NH4+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, oxalate, Br- and methanesulfonate were determined by ion chromatography (IC). Total soluble iodine (TSI) was determined by inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and iodide (I-) and iodate (IO3-) were determined by IC-ICP-MS. Samples were collected using a Sierra-type cascade impactor to separate the aerosol particles at an aerodynamic diameter cutoff of 1 µm. Collection time for these samples varied between 14.3 and 65.2 hours. Samples were extracted with ultrapure water and the major ions Na+, NH4+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, oxalate, Br- and methanesulfonate were determined by ion chromatography (IC). Total soluble iodine (TSI) was determined by inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and iodide (I-) and iodate (IO3-) were determined by IC-ICP-MS. Analysis work was performed by Andrew Smith of University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. The dataset contains the atmospheric concentrations of all measured soluble major ions (in nmol/m³)) and iodine species (in in pmol/m³). The data are reported in “Soluble iodine speciation in marine aerosols across the Indian and Pacific Ocean basins”, E. Droste et al., Frontiers in Marine Science, in preparation, (2021).

    Description: Benthic foraminiferal stable isotope data are presented for Sites 1014 (Tanner Basin, 1176 m) and 1020 (Gorda Ridge, 3040 m) to constrain past changes in Pacific deep- and intermediate-water nutrient chemistry associated with the onset of large-amplitude 100-k.y. climate cycles after ~900 ka. The Site 1014 data were based on analyses of separate species of Cibicidoides, whereas only Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi was used to generate the Site 1020 record. The present data span 380-920 and 620-950 ka at Sites 1014 and 1020, respectively.

    Description: Widespread silicic pyroclastic eruptions of the Oligocene Afro-Arabian flood volcanic province (ignimbrites and airfall tuffs) produced up to 20% of the total flood volcanic stratigraphy (〉6*10**4 km**3). Volumes of individual ignimbrites and tuffs exposed on land range from ~150 to 〉2000 km**3 and eight major units (15-100 m thick) were erupted in 〈2 Myr, placing these amongst the largest-magnitude silicic pyroclastic eruptions on Earth. They are compositionally distinctive time-stratigraphic markers which were deposited as co-ignimbrite ashfall deposits on a near-global scale around the time of the Oi2 cooling anomaly at ~30 Ma. Two ignimbrites from the lower part of the flood volcanic succession in Yemen have been correlated to: (a) the conjugate rifted margin of Ethiopia (〉500 km distant); and (b) to two deep sea ash layers sampled by ODP Leg 115 in the Indian Ocean ~2700 km to the southeast. This correlation is based on whole rock analyses of silicic units for isotope ratios (Pb, Nd) and rare earth element compositions, in conjunction with novel in situ Pb isotope laser ablation multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy analysis of groundmass and glass shards. Compositional diversity preserved on the scale of individual ash shards in these deep sea tephra layers record chemical heterogeneity present in the silicic magma chambers that is not evident in the welded on-land deposits. Ages of the ash layers can be established by correlation to precisely dated on-land ignimbrites, and current evidence suggests that while these eruptions may have exacerbated already changing climatic conditions, they both marginally post-date the Oi2 global cooling anomaly.

    Description: Stalagmites GL-S1, GL-S2, GL-S3 and GL-S4 were collected under scientific license issued by Western Australia's Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions from Golgotha Cave (34.1°S, 115.1°E) in southwest Western Australia, with collection dates of 2005, 2005, 2008 and 2012, respectively. Cave location is rounded to nearest tenth of a degree as exact locations not disclosed for cave conservation purposes. Speleothems were collected for paleoclimate and paleohydrology studies. Golgotha Cave is located in Eucalyptus forest with dense understorey in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. The hostrock is Quaternary aeolinite and the soil thickness is variable with measurements ranging from 0.3-3 m deep. The cave entrance is 70 m above sea level. Stalagmites GL-S1 and GL-S4 are located approximately 60 m from the entrance where the limestone thickness overhead is 30 m while GL-S2 and GL-S3 are located approximately 90 m from the entrance where the limestone thickness overhead is 40 m. Mean annual site temperature is 15.6 ±0.5°C and mean annual rainfall is 1101±157 mm (1911-2018 period; Australian Bureau of Meteorology AWRA-L dataset http://www.bom.gov.au/water/landscape. Inside the cave, temperature ranges from 14.5-14.8°C, windspeed is low (≤0.03 m s-1) and relative humidity ranges from 98-100% (Treble et al 2019). Each speleothem was sectioned along the growth axis and milled using a Taig micromill to produce homogenised powders representing increments of 0.1 to 0.2 mm, depending on the speleothem growth rate. Powders were weighed to 180–220 μg and analysed for O and C isotopic values (δ18O and δ13C) using a Finnigan MAT-251 isotope ratio mass spectrometer coupled to a Kiel I carbonate device, or a Thermo MAT-253 isotope ratio mass spectrometer coupled to a Kiel IV carbonate device (using 110–130 μg samples), at the Research School of Earth Sciences, ANU. Analyses were calibrated using NBS-19 standard (δ18Ov-PDB = -2.20 ‰ and δ13Cv-PDB = 1.95 ‰). A further linear correction for δ18O measurements was carried out using the NBS-18 standard (δ18Ov-PDB = -23.0 ‰). The original delta values for NBS-19 and NBS-18 are used to maintain consistency of results through time in the RSES Stable Isotope Facility. Analytical precision for the analyses reported here (NBS-19) are ±0.04 ‰ for δ18O and ±0.02 ‰ for δ13C (N=236) for the MAT-251; and ±0.05 ‰ for δ18O and ±0.01 ‰ (N=27) for the MAT-253 instrument (±1σ standard deviation). Speleothem chronologies were determined by combining information from the date of collection, bomb pulse chronology, laminae counting of annual Sr concentration and U-series disequilibrium (see Supplementary Table 8 in Treble et al., 2022). For GL-S1, the age-depth model for 17th percentile was used in Treble et al., (2022) and the 50th percentile used for other stalagmites.
