    Abstract: This book covers current developments in membrane-based technologies for the successful recovery of food bioactive ingredients and molecules. Chapters explore emerging technologies, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and membrane distillation, for the selective concentration and food ingredients from food by-products, as well as techniques, such as pervaporation, for the selective separation and recovery of aroma compounds. The text provides one of the first examinations of other membrane-based technologies, such as liquid membranes (microemulsions), membrane distillation (MD) and pervaporation (PV), as thermal driven membrane processes.     Abstract: Sustainable development is a process to improve the quality of life of people, while maintaining the ability of social–ecological systems to continue to provide valuable ecological services that social systems require. In the Galapagos Islands, the maintenance of amenity resources to support tourism and the quality of life of residents is explicitly linked to ecosystem goods and services, particularly, the accessibility to high-quality natural environments and the terrestrial and marine visitation sites that showcase iconic species. On June 26-30, 2022, the Galapagos Science Center celebrated its 10-Year Anniversary. As the crowning event of the anniversary celebration, the World Summit on Island Sustainability was held on San Cristobal Island, Galapagos Archipelago of Ecuador. The intent of the World Summit was to bring together leading experts on island ecosystems and, particularly, on island sustainability from across the globe to represent a diversity of perspectives, approaches, and stakeholder groups. The World Summit was an exclusive event that featured an “expert convening” of scholars and practitioners to address the social, terrestrial, and marine sub-systems of the Galapagos Islands and other similarly challenged island ecosystems from around the globe. The World Summit attracted 150 scientists to the Galapagos Islands to discuss projects conducted, for instance, in the Galapagos Islands, Hawaii, Guam, French Polynesia, Chile, Australia, and the Caribbean Islands. Island vulnerability, resilience, and sustainability were examined by scholars, for instance, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Catholic University of Chile, University of Guam, James Cook University, University of the Sunshine Coast, North Carolina State University, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, California Academy of Sciences, University of San Francisco, and the University of South Alabama as well as affiliated scientists from Exeter University, University of Edinburgh, University of Southampton, and the Galapagos National Park. The World Summit also included scholars from Re:wild, World Wildlife Fund, EarthEcho, and the East-West Center, Hawaii.

    Abstract: This book offers comprehensive information on the new and rapidly evolving science of identifying and targeting senescent cells, and on the exciting prospect of new diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities for stopping, and even reversing, the progression of disease and the deterioration of the human body due to ageing. According to recent United Nations data, by 2050 one in six people worldwide will be older than age 65, with peaks rising to one in four people in Europe and North America. Remarkably, the number of persons aged 80 years or older is expected to triple, from 143 million in 2019 to 426 million in 2050. First documented in the 1960s, the concept of cellular senescence as an underlying cause of ageing has been established in the course of the last decade. Using genetically engineered mouse models, researchers have demonstrated that the selective elimination of senescent cells can block and even reverse a number of age-related dysfunctions and pathologies, promoting both better health and longer life in the elderly. These include cardiovascular diseases; neurological disorders; type 1 and type 2 diabetes; inflammatory diseases; fibrosis; geriatric syndromes; chronic diseases resulting in organ dysfunction; the integrity of the musculoskeletal system; and cancer. Some senolytic agents have already progressed into trials. These include UBX0101 for the treatment of osteoarthritis (now in phase II), a cocktail of dasatinib and quercetin for the management of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and chronic kidney disease, and ABT-263 in combination with senescence-inducing chemotherapies for the treatment of advanced solid tumours. In addition, the book discusses pathways to early phase clinical trials and translational approaches in medicine and ageing, highlighting new opportunities as well as current limitations, challenges and alternatives. Given its scope, it will benefit a broad audience of advanced educators, researchers, graduate students and practitioners.

    Notes: Abstract [32P]-labeled ATPase was isolated in a highly purified state fromMicrococcus lysodeikticus strain PNB grown in medium supplemented with [32P]orthophosphate. Selective extraction procedures allowed us to determine that at least 25% of the firmly bound label belonged to adenine nucleotides, ATP and ADP being present in equimolar amounts. However, no32P label was found to be part of phospholipids. This was confirmed by purification of the ATPase from cells fed with [2—3H]glycerol. Using the luciferin-luciferase assay we estimated that ATPase freshly isolated by Sephadex chromatography (specific activity 10–14 µmole substrate transformed · min−1 · mg protein−1) contained 2 moles ATP/mole of enzyme. The ratio fell with the age of enzyme and its purification by gel electrophoresis and this was paralleled by a loss of ATPase activity. The endogenous nucleotides were readily exchanged by added ADP or ATP. This result suggests that the sites for tight binding of adenine nucleotides are equivalent, although ADP seems to have a higher affinity for them. The last properties represent a peculiar characteristic of this bacterial ATPase as compared with other bacterial and organelle energy-transducing proteins.

    Description: Las instituciones de educación superior en nuestro continente hasta mediados del siglo XIX desarrollaron sus propuestas formativas desde el salón de clases, complementadas con las exigencias de la revolución industrial al promover procesos de investigación. Con las revoluciones políticas de comienzos del siglo XX se intronizan en culturas y gobiernos de democracia occidental la necesidad de atender “lo social”, tema hasta entonces propio de la filantropía y la caridad, por mandato de las ideas de Maquiavelo, Locke y Smith. Solo con las Reformas de Cordoba (1918) las universidades latinoamericanas colocan sus saberes y experiencia para atender y acompañar diferentes estamentos sociales en sus preocupaciones y posibilidades surgiendo así la función sustantiva de proyección social u extensión universitaria. Desde allí la universidad hace más útil y pertinente su proyecto educativo mediante una interacción dialógica con las comunidades donde realiza sus asesorías, consultorías, educación continua y practicas estudiantiles al aportar sus conocimientos al medio externo y al nutrir docencia e investigación con los aprendizajes y cuestionamientos de usuarios de sus programas. Es allí donde se genera valor desde su quehacer misional, desde su innovación social. Esa es principalmente su importancia como institución de educación superior: aporta y crese.

    Description: The results of a search for gluino and squark pair production with the pairs decaying via the lightest charginos into a final state consisting of two W bosons, the lightest neutralinos ($$ilde{chi }^0_1$$ χ ~ 1 0 ), and quarks, are presented: the signal is characterised by the presence of a single charged lepton ($$e^{pm }$$ e ± or $$mu ^{pm }$$ μ ± ) from a W boson decay, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The analysis is performed using 139 fb$$^{-1}$$ - 1 of proton–proton collision data taken at a centre-of-mass energy $$sqrt{s}=13$$ s = 13   delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS experiment. No statistically significant excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is found. Limits are set on the direct production of squarks and gluinos in simplified models. Masses of gluino (squark) up to 2.2  (1.4 ) are excluded at 95% confidence level for a light $$ilde{chi }^0_1$$ χ ~ 1 0 .

    Description: el texto que se presenta aquí sistematiza las experiencias del proyecto “Diplomatura virtual en prevención de problemáticas psicosociales en el ámbito universitario con énfasis en adicciones”, auspiciado por el Centro Coordinador de la Investigación de la Federación Internacional de Universidades Católicas –FIUC-, en el que participaron las Universidades: Universidad Católica Luis Amigó (Colombia) a partir del reconocimiento como universidad que otorgó el Ministerio de Educación Nacional a la institución, el 10 de noviembre de 2016; Católica de Honduras Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz; Católica de Costa Rica y Católica de Chile Cardenal Silva Henríquez. En la primera parte del texto se da cuenta del proyecto, sus antecedentes, objetivos, metodología y actividades; una reseña sobre las instituciones participantes y una reflexión sobre los problemas psicosociales de los universitarios hoy. En la segunda parte, se presentan los resultados de las pesquisas desarrolladas por cada una de la Universidades participantes, para dar cuenta de las problemáticas psicosociales que más afectan a sus propias comunidades educativas y del programa de prevención diseñado para intervenir dichos problemas.
