Description: "Performing Power illuminates how colonial dominance in Indonesia was legitimized, maintained, negotiated, and contested through the everyday staging and public performance of power between the colonizer and colonized. Arnout Van der Meer's Performing Power explores what seemingly ordinary interactions reveal about the construction of national, racial, social, religious, and gender identities as well as the experience of modernity in colonial Indonesia. Through acts of everyday resistance, such as speaking a different language, withholding deference, and changing one's appearance and consumer behavior, a new generation of Indonesians contested the hegemonic colonial appropriation of local culture, and the racial and gender inequalities that it sustained. Over time these relationships of domination and subordination became inverted, and by the twentieth century the Javanese used the tropes of Dutch colonial behavior to subvert the administrative hierarchy of the state. Thanks to generous funding from the Sustainable History Monograph Pilot and the Mellon Foundation the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access (OA) volumes from Cornell Open (cornellopen.org) and other Open Access repositories."

Description: Down core marine sediment samples from ODP Site 1240 have been used for the analysis of the C28 and C30 1,14-diols, the C37:2 and C37:3 long chain ketones (alkenones) and the 24-methylcholesta-5,22-dien-3β-ol (brassicasterol) as proxies of primary productivity. Alkenones were also used to infer past sea surface temperatures through the unsaturation index UK'37. The C29 n-alkane was measured to obtain information on continental material inputs. δD of C37-alkenones and δ¹⁸O-seawater of Globigerinoides ruber were used as indicators of relative salinity changes. This data has been used for the study of the period between 150 and 110 ka (sediment depth from ca. 13 to 17 m), according to the age model from Rippert et al. (2017).

Description: Long-chain diols (LCDs) have been measured on suspended particulate matter from the surface of Lake Geneva (France/Switzerland) during a year (August 2017 to June 2018). LCD have been extracted from the filter (~20L of water) by acid and base hydrolysis followed by an aluminum oxide column (eluted with dichloromethane:methanol, 1:1, v/v). They have been quantified on a GC-MS (gas chromatograph mass spectrometer) on single ion monitoring mode. In addition, 40L of water have been incubated with 13C-labeled bicarbonate and the LCD have been extracted as above plus their 13C-ratio has been determined after silylation using a gas chromatograph isotope ratio mass spectrometer.

Description: Concentrations of monoanhydrous sugars (firemarkers) were analysed in core H11 from Hala Hu, China. The lake is located on the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau (97.24 - 97.47°E, 38.12 - 38.25°N, 4,078 m above sea level), along the modern marginal zone between the Asian Summer Monsoon (ASM) and westerlies influences. The core was drilled at the deepest point (65 m) of the lake and extends from 0 to 212 cm sediment depth. According to the age-model (Yan et al., 2020) the covered time period is modern - 9216 cal yr BP. Compounds were quantified by means of ion chromatography (IC Dionex ICS 5000, Thermo Scientific, Waltham, USA), coupled with a single quadrupole mass spectrometer (MSQ Plus™, Thermo Scientific), which was equipped with a CarboPac MA1™ column (Thermo Scientific, 2 mm x 250 mm) and an Amino Trap column (2 mm x 50 mm).

Description: %OC, %TN, δ13C and δ15N analysed in C3 and C4 plants, soils, SPM and riverbed sediments in the Godavari River basin (India), located in the Core Monsoon Zone. Above-ground plant parts of C3 and C4 vegetation were collected at the end of the dry season (February/March 2015) across the Godavari basin, including trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, grasses and dominant crops. Surface soils (0-10 cm) were collected near the Godavari River, and SPM (10-80 L, filtered over 0.7 μm GFF filters) and bulk and fine (≤63 μm) riverbed sediments were collected in a dry (February/March 2015) and wet season (July/August 2015). Mean Annual Precipitation (MAP) data were retrieved from Dearing Crampton-Flood et al. (2019) (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.907818) and India Water Resources Information System (https://indiawris.gov.in/)

Description: The TEX86 paleothermometer has been extensively used to reconstruct past sea water temperatures, but it remains unclear which export depths the proxy represents. Here we used a novel approach to better constrain the proxy recording depths by investigating paleotemperature proxies (TEX86, UK'37, RI-OH and RI-OH') from two pairs of proximal (〈 12 km apart) cores from Chilean and Angola margin, respectively. These cores are from steep continental slopes and lower shelves, which leads to a substantial difference in water depth between them despite being closely located. Surprisingly, the deep and the shallow UK'37 records at the Chilean margin shows dissimilarities, in contrast to the similar records from the Angola margin, which may be due to post-depositional alteration at the former sites. In contrast, the TEX86 records were statistically indistinguishable between the sites at both the locations, even though the GDGT [2]/[3] ratio suggests GDGTs derived from potentially different archaeal communities residing at different depths. A short-lived difference between the TEX86 records is observed during the last glacial period at the Angola margin, possibly due to a contribution of Antarctic Intermediate Waters to the deep site. Modelling suggests that the TEX86 source signal at our core sites reaches its peak abundance at water depths shallower than 350 m. The RI-OH and RI-OH' records show similar variability as the TEX86 records, although regional differences in their absolute temperature estimates exist. Our approach using proximal sediment cores at steep slopes appears useful to constrain the export depth of organic proxy signals for paleoreconstructions.

Description: Hala Hu is located on the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau (97.24 - 97.47°E, 38.12 - 38.25°N, 4,078 m above sea level), along the modern marginal zone between the Asian Summer Monsoon (ASM) and westerlies influences. Cores H11 and H7 were drilled at the deepest point (65 m) of the lake and extend from 0 - 262 cm (H11) and from 212 to 636 cm (H7) depth, respectively. According to the age-model (Yan et al., 2020) the covered time periods are modern to 9216 cal yr BP and 7462 - 23610 cal yr BP. We analysed the concentrations and hydrogen isotopic compositions of different aquatic (alkenones, mid-chain n-alkenes, C20-HBIs) and terrestrial (long-chain n-alkanes) biomarker groups. Further, monoanhydrous sugars (firemarkers) were analysed in core H11. The principal aim of this study was to evaluate hydroclimate dynamics and ecosystem responses since the last glacial, in a typical glacier influenced, high-altitude and lacustrine ecosystem.
