    Notes: We present measurements of the relaxation of the low field thermoremanent magnetization of Fe0.65Ni0.24Cr0.11 over four decades of observation time 1 s〈t≤104 s, as a function of temperature T and system age tw. The system orders ferromagnetically at Tc(approximately-equal-to)110 K and then, near TR(approximately-equal-to)50 K collapses into a much less responsive low-temperature phase, with glassy, age-dependent dynamics appearing below Tg(approximately-equal-to)22 K. We have analyzed the data using a model of random traps developed by Bouchaud, according to which the relaxation curves for different tw at a given temperature T will scale onto a universal curve when plotted as a function of t/tw, provided that proper account is taken of the distribution of ergodic times terg possessed by a real system. With the assumption of a log-normal distribution P(terg), we have calculated the nonuniversal correction-to-scaling factor explicitly, and we have shown that the data do indeed collapse remarkably well onto a universal curve, with a suitable choice of values for the two distribution parameters, and for the two relaxation function parameters. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The relaxation of the thermoremanent magnetization of the reentrant ferromagnet (Fe0.65Ni0.35)0.882Mn0.118 has been measured as a function of temperature T and system age tw within the glass phase T〈Tg≅65 K. The relaxation isotherms were fitted to functional forms predicted by the elementary decay model, which assumes that relaxation in disordered systems is a superposition of independently decaying thermal activations, with an age-dependent stochastic Poissonian distribution of energies. The behavior of the distributions is interpreted in the context of a picture of activated hopping among a set of metastable traps in configuration space. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have used the inherent surface sensitivity of second-harmonic generation to develop an instrument for nonlinear optical microscopy of surfaces and interfaces. This optical technique is ideal for imaging nanometer-thick, chromophoric self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), which have been patterned using photolithographic techniques. In this paper, we demonstrate the application of second-harmonic generation microscopy to patterned SAMs of the noncentrosymmetric molecule calixarene and discuss the resolution and sensitivity limits of the technique. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: One of the problems encountered in designing a waveguide free-electron laser (FEL) is to suppress the lower-frequency branch, which may have a higher gain than the more useful higher-frequency branch. It is shown that the electron pulse length and energy spread strongly influence the competition between the gains at high and low frequency for a waveguide FEL. It is also found that the negative slippage that may take place at the lower-frequency branch results in larger reduction in gain than the positive slippage. The maximum allowable electron energy spread for both resonance frequencies is derived. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A systematic investigation of the transport properties of GdAs single crystals is presented. We report on measurements of the electric resistivity, magnetoresistance and Hall effect performed on a stoichiometric and a nonstoichiometric sample at temperatures between 1.6 and 300 K in fields up to 10 T. The stoichiometric sample behaved as a well compensated semimetal that orders antiferromagnetically, while the nonstoichiometric sample showed some anomalies that could be explained qualitatively by the model of trapped magnetic polarons. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A heating–pulling device is established for producing the optical fiber probe used in scanning near-field optical microscopy. A CO2 laser, the power of which can be adjusted continuously between 0 and 10 W, is used as the heating source. Pulling is done by two identical motors. On the basis of the device, a novel approach different from the conventional heating–pulling method is developed, which eliminates the need for a computer, reflective mirror, and varied force during tip formation. Thus it is simple and easy to use. The cost is reduced greatly. Tips with parabolic taper, short taper region, and a diameter of 65 nm, which are optimal conditions for high transmission efficiency, are obtained. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new type of relativistic electron acceleration facility is being developed by the Laser Science Research Group at The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research. It utilizes laser-induced photoelectrons accelerated by a compact DISKTRON electrostatic accelerator, which makes it possible to generate a controllable bright short-pulsed electron beam up to the energy of 1 MeV with a low emittance (〈2×10−5 mrad) and high current density (∼500 A/cm2) without any guiding field. The characteristics of the entire facility and some of the key components are described in detail. The experimental results which confirm the possibilities of increasing quantum efficiency of metal photocathodes by geometric alteration are reported. Observation of laser undulator effects in the visible wavelength was demonstrated in the facility. The coming use of the system includes a far-infrared/submillimeter free-electron laser using a microwiggler and generation of extreme ultraviolet radiation by the laser undulator. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The liquid coating (LC) has been employed to apply epoxy and lubricant over the surface of rapidly solidified Nd–Fe–B powder particles. The LC led to an improvement of physical and magnetic properties for the powders and magnets compared to the dry blending and the encapsulation methods. The LC powders have excellent flowability and can be used for bonded magnets requiring very close tolerances; further bonded magnets made using this powder posses higher strength.© 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: It has recently become apparent that "standard" (low-concentration and low-compensation) theory for donor–acceptor pair (DAP) photoluminescence (PL) is totally incapable of explaining results in highly doped and compensated material. It can be noted that such material is often of high technological interest. It has been argued, mainly qualitatively, that the discrepancies result from potential fluctuations due to random ionic charges. We here present a quantitative theory for cw DAP PL, using an approximate model. We also present data for the concentration and intensity dependence of DAP PL in heavily doped ZnSe:N, and show that the results are explained very satisfactorily by our fluctuation model. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
