Description: At the Centro Ostrícola Tecnológico de Tabasco (COTET-MX), the effect of homeopathic medicines authorized for human use by the Ministry of Health of Mexico and homeopathic products designed by CIBNOR, were evaluated during gonadal conditioning of american oyster Crassostrea virginica broodstock. In the experimental design, an initial sample (T0), two homeopathic treatments [T1 (ViP-7C + ViA-7C), T2 (PhA-7C + SiT-7C)] and a control treatment T3 (distilled water) were considered. The physiological response was quantified by the frequency (%) of gonadal development stages in females and males, during a period of 30 days. At the end of the bioassay, the broodstock that received treatments T1 and T2 were able to re-mature, spawn and produce viable larvae. This suggests a potential applicability of these treatments in the commercial production of C. virginica seeds.

Description: The accumulation of discarded or oyster shells has a negative environmental impact due to its slow degradation, and the potential of these residues to obtain calcium salts has been demonstrated. In this work, the best operating conditions were established to obtain calcium lactate and citrate on a laboratory scale, from mangrove oyster shell meal by leaching with HCl, formation of salts with organic acids (lactic and citric). using NaOH as precipitating agent. The influence of four factors was evaluated: type of acid (lactic and citric), concentration of HCl (3,5 % and 7 % v/v), solvent:solid ratio (7:1 and 10:1 mL/g) and stirring speed (150 and 200 min-1) on the mass of salt and the yield (referred to the mass of flour, of CaCO3 and the amount of theoretical salt to be obtained), for an experimental design 24 with replication at all points . The flour composition analysis showed the highest percentage for CaCO3 (89,60 %). The experimental design showed that the only statistically significant variables with 95 % confidence were the concentration of HCl and the solvent:solid ratio for both salts. The best operating conditions were the HCl concentration of 7 %, the ratio of 10:1 mL/g at 150 min-1.

Description: Metagenomics is an expanding field within microbial ecology, microbiology, and related disciplines. The number of metagenomes deposited in major public repositories such as Sequence Read Archive (SRA) and Metagenomic Rapid Annotations using Subsystems Technology (MG-RAST) is rising exponentially. However, data mining and interpretation can be challenging due to mis-annotated and misleading metadata entries. In this study, we describe the Marine Metagenome Metadata Database (MarineMetagenomeDB) to help researchers identify marine metagenomes of interest for re-analysis and meta-analysis. To this end, we have manually curated the associated metadata of several thousands of microbial metagenomes currently deposited at SRA and MG-RAST.
