    Description: Geobiology explores how Earth's system has changed over the course of geologic history and how living organisms on this planet are impacted by or are indeed causing these changes. For decades, geologists, paleontologists, and geochemists have generated data to investigate these topics. Foundational efforts in sedimentary geochemistry utilized spreadsheets for data storage and analysis, suitable for several thousand samples, but not practical or scalable for larger, more complex datasets. As results have accumulated, researchers have increasingly gravitated toward larger compilations and statistical tools. New data frameworks have become necessary to handle larger sample sets and encourage more sophisticated or even standardized statistical analyses. In this paper, we describe the Sedimentary Geochemistry and Paleoenvironments Project (SGP; Figure 1), which is an open, community-oriented, database-driven research consortium. The goals of SGP are to (1) create a relational database tailored to the needs of the deep-time (millions to billions of years) sedimentary geochemical research community, including assembling and curating published and associated unpublished data; (2) create a website where data can be retrieved in a flexible way; and (3) build a collaborative consortium where researchers are incentivized to contribute data by giving them priority access and the opportunity to work on exciting questions in group papers. Finally, and more idealistically, the goal was to establish a culture of modern data management and data analysis in sedimentary geochemistry. Relative to many other fields, the main emphasis in our field has been on instrument measurement of sedimentary geochemical data rather than data analysis (compared with fields like ecology, for instance, where the post-experiment ANOVA (analysis of variance) is customary). Thus, the longer-term goal was to build a collaborative environment where geobiologists and geologists can work and learn together to assess changes in geochemical signatures through Earth history.

    Description: The development of specialized sports nutrition with components of collagen-containing fish raw materials is due to the shortage of domestic products of this group, the problem of fish waste processing, scientific data on bioactive peptides of marine origin. Low-molecular active peptides and protein-mineral compositions in the form of powder and liquid dietary supplements were obtained from the scales of sardine and sardinella by methods of deep hydrolysis. During the hydrolysis of raw materials, fermentolysis was carried out with the Alcalase 2.5L enzyme, thermohydrolysis – at temperatures of 130–140 °C. The chemical composition of the scales of two fish species, the products of its hydrolysis, and the amino acid composition of its proteins have been studied. The amount of low-molecular-weight peptides in hydrolysates of sardine scales was investigated by various methods of hydrolysis. Rational methods of hydrolysis of scales – enzymatic and enzymatic-thermal – have been substantiated. They make it possible to obtain protein supplements with protein content of 83.9–85.2 % with a proportion of active peptides with a molecular weight of less than 10 kDa 91.7–98.1 %. A technology for obtaining protein supplements from fish scales has been developed, and their amino acid composition has been studied. The presence of irreplaceable and ergogenic amino acids, accompanying nitrogenous compounds, valuable in sports nutrition, was shown in the peptide supplement. An increased content of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in the protein-mineral dietary supplement being important for the musculoskeletal tissues of an athlete has been established. On the basis of protein supplements in dry and liquid forms with the addition of beekeeping products, the technology of chewing marmalade for sports nutrition has been developed. Bioproduct "Apikolltonus" belongs to the class of gainers with a protein content of 20.5 %, a carbohydrate of 41.6 % with an amino acid value of BCAA (isoleucine : leucine : valine) 2 : 1 : 1.5. A multicomponent bar for sports nutrition has been developed using protein hydrolysates of scales, flaxseed and apple cakes, and pine nuts. The bar is functional in terms of the content of calcium and phosphorus, dietary fiber, flavonoids, and vitamin E. Recommendations for the use of new sports nutrition products are substantiated.
    Description: Разработка специализированного спортивного питания с биологически активными компонентами коллагенсодержащего рыбного сырья обусловлена дефицитом отечественных продуктов данной группы, проблемой переработки рыбных отходов, научными данными о биоактивных пептидах морского происхождения. Из чешуи сардины и сардинеллы методами глубокого гидролиза получали низкомолекулярные активные пептиды и протеино-минеральные композиции в форме порошкообразных и жидких биодобавок. При гидролизе сырья первоначально проводили ферментолиз ферментом Alcalase 2.5L, затем термогидролиз при температурах 130–140 °С. Изучены химический состав чешуи двух видов рыб, продуктов ее гидролиза, аминокислотный состав белков. Исследовано количество низкомолекулярных пептидов в гидролизатах чешуи сардины при различных способах гидролиза. Обоснованы рациональные способы гидролиза чешуи – ферментативный и ферментативно-термический, позволяющие получать протеиновые добавки с содержанием белка 83,9–85,2 % при доле активных пептидов с молекулярной массой менее 10 кДа 91,7–98,1 %. Разработана технология получения из чешуи рыб протеиновых биодобавок, изучен их аминокислотный состав. Показано наличие в пептидной добавке ценных в спортивном питании незаменимых и эргогенных аминокислот, сопутствующих азотистых соединений. Установлено повышенное содержание в протеино-минеральной биодобавке кальция, фосфора и магния, значимых для костно-мышечных тканей спортсмена. На основе протеиновых биодобавок в сухой и жидкой форме с добавлением продуктов пчеловодства разработана технология жевательного мармелада для спортивного питания. Биопродукт "АпиколлТонус" принадлежит к классу гейнеров с содержанием белка 20,5 %, углеводов 41,6 % при аминокислотном показателе ВСАА (изолейцин : лейцин : валин) 2 : 1 : 1,5. Разработан поликомпонентный батончик для спортивного питания с применением протеиновых гидролизатов чешуи рыб, льняного и яблочного жмыхов, кедровых орехов. Батончик является функциональным по содержанию кальция и фосфора, пищевых волокон, флавоноидов, витамина Е. Обоснованы рекомендации по употреблению новых продуктов спортивного питания.

    Description: The search for equivalent flavoring sugar substitutes of a non-sugar nature is an urgent direction in the development of the technology of flour confectionery products. In the course of research, a gingerbread recipe has been developed with a partial replacement of the prescription sugar with a 15 % solution of sucralose in glycerin, which most closely correspond to the organoleptic characteristics (taste, smell, texture) of traditional flour confectionery products. The results of the organoleptic evaluation of coded prototypes of gingerbread with the involvement of experts have shown that a decrease in sugar concentration by 25 % does not lead to a statistically significant change in organoleptic parameters in comparison with control samples. Substitution of more than 30 % sugar leads to an increase in the plasticity of the dough complicating the operation of the dosing mechanisms; at the same time, the taste of the products changes (these changes are noted during the tasting assessment); their consistency becomes denser. In the process of research, the stability of the quantitative and qualitative properties of gingerbread during storage has been proved. Experimental samples of gingerbread with 25 % reduced sugar content retain all the indicators established by GOST for their storage for 90 days without statistically significant changes. The decomposition of sucralose in the manufacture of the dough is 0.1 %, in the baking process – 2.6 %, during storage for 120 days – 6.7 % (of the loaded product). The developed recipe allows enterprises to expand the range of confectionery products with reduced sugar content.
    Description: Поиск эквивалентных вкусовых сахарозаменителей несахаристой природы является актуальным направлением развития технологии мучных кондитерских изделий. В ходе исследований разработана рецептура пряников с частичной заменой рецептурного сахара на 15%-й раствор сукралозы в глицерине, максимально соответствующих по органолептическим показателям (вкусу, запаху, консистенции) традиционным мучным кондитерским изделиям. Результаты органолептической оценки закодированных опытных образцов пряников с привлечением экспертов показали, что снижение концентрации сахара на 25 % не приводит к статистически достоверному изменению органолептических показателей в сравнении с контрольными образцами. Замена более 30 % сахара способствует повышению пластичности теста, что затрудняет работу дозирующих механизмов; при этом изменяется вкус изделий (данные изменения отмечаются в ходе дегустационной оценки); их консистенция становится более плотной. В процессе исследований доказана стабильность количественных и качественных свойств пряников при хранении. Опытные образцы пряников с пониженным на 25 % содержанием сахара сохраняют все показатели, установленные ГОСТом для их хранения в течение 90 суток без статистически значимых изменений. Разложение сукралозы при изготовлении теста составило 0,1 %, в процессе выпечки – 2,6 %, при хранении в течение 120 суток – 6,7 % (от загруженного продукта). Разработанная рецептура позволяет предприятиям расширить ассортимент кондитерских изделий с пониженным содержанием сахара.

    Description: Context. Turbulence dominated by large amplitude nonlinear Alfvén-like fluctuations mainly propagating away from the Sun is ubiquitous in high speed solar wind streams. Recent studies have shown that also slow wind streams may show strong Alfvénic signatures, especially in the inner heliosphere. Aims. The present study focuses on the characterization of an Alfvénic slow solar wind interval observed by Solar Orbiter on July 14-18, 2020 at a heliocentric distance of 0.64 AU. Methods. Our analysis is based on plasma moments and magnetic field measurements from SWA and MAG instruments, respectively. We compare the behavior of di erent parameters to characterize the stream in terms of the Alfvénic content and magnetic properties. We perform also a spectral analysis to highlight spectral features and waves signature using power spectral density and magnetic helicity spectrograms, respectively. Moreover, we reconstruct the Solar Orbiter magnetic connectivity to the solar sources via both a ballistic and a Potential Field Source Surface (PFSS) model. Results. The Alfvénic slow wind stream described in this paper resembles in many respects a fast wind stream. Indeed, at large scales, the timeseries of the speed profile shows a compression region, a main portion of the stream and a rarefaction region, characterized by di erent features. Moreover, before the rarefaction region, we pinpoint several structures at di erent scales recalling the spaghetti-like flux-tube texture of the interplanetary magnetic field. Finally, we identify the connections between Solar Orbiter in situ measurements, tracing them down to coronal streamer and pseudostreamer configurations. Conclusions. The characterization of the Alfvénic slow wind stream observed by Solar Orbiter and the identification of its solar source are extremely important aspects to understand possible future observations of the same solar wind regime, especially as solar activity is increasing toward a maximum, where a higher incidence of this solar wind regime is expected.

    Description: Forests mitigate climate change by storing carbon and reducing emissions via substitution effects of wood products. Additionally, they provide many other important ecosystem services (ESs), but are vulnerable to climate change; therefore, adaptation is necessary. Climate‐smart forestry combines mitigation with adaptation, whilst facilitating the provision of many ESs. This is particularly challenging due to large uncertainties about future climate. Here, we combined ecosystem modeling with robust multi‐criteria optimization to assess how the provision of various ESs (climate change mitigation, timber provision, local cooling, water availability, and biodiversity habitat) can be guaranteed under a broad range of climate futures across Europe. Our optimized portfolios contain 29% unmanaged forests, and implicate a successive conversion of 34% of coniferous to broad‐leaved forests (11% vice versa). Coppices practically vanish from Southern Europe, mainly due to their high water requirement. We find the high shares of unmanaged forests necessary to keep European forests a carbon sink while broad‐leaved and unmanaged forests contribute to local cooling through biogeophysical effects. Unmanaged forests also pose the largest benefit for biodiversity habitat. However, the increased shares of unmanaged and broad‐leaved forests lead to reductions in harvests. This raises the question of how to meet increasing wood demands without transferring ecological impacts elsewhere or enhancing the dependence on more carbon‐intensive industries. Furthermore, the mitigation potential of forests depends on assumptions about the decarbonization of other industries and is consequently crucially dependent on the emission scenario. Our findings highlight that trade‐offs must be assessed when developing concrete strategies for climate‐smart forestry.
    Description: Plain Language Summary: Forests help mitigate climate change by storing carbon and via avoided emissions when wood products replace more carbon‐intensive materials. At the same time, forests provide many other “ecosystem services (ESs)” to society. For example, they provide timber, habitat for various species, and they cool their surrounding regions. They are, however, also vulnerable to ongoing climate change. Forest management must consider all these aspects, which is particularly challenging considering the uncertainty about future climate. Here, we propose how this may be tackled by computing optimized forest management portfolios for Europe for a broad range of future climate pathways. Our results show that changes to forest composition are necessary. In particular, increased shares of unmanaged and broad‐leaved forests are beneficial for numerous ESs. However, these increased shares also lead to decreases in harvest rates, posing a conflict between wood supply and demand. We further show that the mitigation potential of forests strongly depends on how carbon‐intensive the replaced materials are. Consequently, should these materials become “greener” due to new technologies, the importance of wood products in terms of climate change mitigation decreases. Our study highlights that we cannot optimize every aspect, but that trade‐offs between ESs need to be made.

    Description: The genus Phaeocystis is distributed globally and has considerable ecological, biogeochemical, and societal impacts. Understanding its distribution, growth and ecological impacts has been limited by lack of extensive observations on appropriate scales. In 2018, we investigated the biological dynamics of the New England continental shelf and encountered a substantial bloom of Phaeocystis pouchetii. Based on satellite imagery during January through April, the bloom extended over broad expanses of the shelf; furthermore, our observations demonstrated that it reached high biomass levels, with maximum chlorophyll concentrations exceeding 16 µg L−1 and particulate organic carbon levels 〉 95 µmol L−1. Initially, the bloom was largely confined to waters with temperatures 〈6°C, which in turn were mostly restricted to shallow areas near the coast. As the bloom progressed, it appeared to sink into the bottom boundary layer; however, enough light and nutrients were available for growth. The bloom was highly productive (net community production integrated through the mixed layer from stations within the bloom averaged 1.16 g C m−2 d−1) and reduced nutrient concentrations considerably. Long‐term coastal observations suggest that Phaeocystis blooms occur sporadically in spring on Nantucket Shoals and presumably expand onto the continental shelf. Based on the distribution of Phaeocystis during our study, we suggest that it can have a significant impact on the overall productivity and ecology of the New England shelf during the winter/spring transition.

    Description: Several studies have shown that the greenhouse gas reduction resulting from the current nationally determined contributions (NDCs) will not be enough to meet the overall targets of the Paris Climate Agreement. It has been suggested that more ambition mitigations of short-lived climate forcer (SLCF) emissions could potentially be a way to reduce the risk of overshooting the 1.5 or 2 °C target in a cost-effective way. In this study, we employ eight state-of-the-art integrated assessment models (IAMs) to examine the global temperature effects of ambitious reductions of methane, black and organic carbon, and hydrofluorocarbon emissions. The SLCFs measures considered are found to add significantly to the effect of the NDCs on short-term global mean temperature (GMT) (in the year 2040: − 0.03 to − 0.15 °C) and on reducing the short-term rate-of-change (by − 2 to 15%), but only a small effect on reducing the maximum temperature change before 2100. This, because later in the century under assumed ambitious climate policy, SLCF mitigation is maximized, either directly or indirectly due to changes in the energy system. All three SLCF groups can contribute to achieving GMT changes.

    Description: Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) is widely used to characterize long-range power-law correlations in complex signals. However, it has restrictions when nonstationarity is not limited only to slow variations in the mean value. To improve the characterization of inhomogeneous datasets, we have proposed the extended DFA (EDFA), which is a modification of the conventional method that evaluates an additional scaling exponent to take into account the features of time-varying nonstationary behavior. Based on EDFA, here, we analyze rat electroencephalograms to identify specific changes in the slow-wave dynamics of brain electrical activity associated with two different conditions, such as the opening of the blood–brain barrier and sleep, which are both characterized by the activation of the brain drainage function. We show that these conditions cause a similar reduction in the scaling exponents of EDFA. Such a similarity may represent an informative marker of fluid homeostasis of the central nervous system. Natural systems often exhibit complex dynamics with long-range power-law correlations. To quantify this phenomenon, different variants of fluctuation analysis are used with detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA),1,2 representing a universal method that can be applied to both stationary and nonstationary time series. In many practical situations, however, nonstationarity cannot be eliminated by simply removing the slow variation in mean value. For such a case, we have recently proposed an extended method (EDFA), which estimates two scaling exponents: the first exponent is associated with the conventional DFA and the second exponent quantifies the impact of nonstationarity.3 Here, we use EDFA to identify informative markers of changes in electroencephalograms associated with two different factors, namely, open blood–brain barrier (BBB) and sleep, which are characterized by activated brain drainage function. By means of EDFA, we uncover that both factors, sound and sleep, cause similar changes in the low-frequency dynamics of electroencephalograms (EEG). These results offer a hint of the similarity of EEG dynamics related to distinct mechanisms of fluid drainage from the brain during sleep and after the BBB opening

    Description: We study changes in the blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability in mice caused by a 2-h intermittent sound and discuss their reflection in the electrical activity of the brain. Using the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), multiresolution wavelet analysis (MWA) and their recent modifications, we compare the capabilities of reliably characterizing the transitions between closed and open BBB states. It is shown that an enhanced approach, combining MWA with DFA of the decomposition coefficients, improves the interstate separation by limiting the most appropriate level of resolution. This approach can be useful in various studies of complex systems based on experimental data.

    Description: This study examines model-specific assumptions and projections of methane (CH4) emissions in deep mitigation scenarios generated by integrated assessment models (IAMs). For this, scenarios of nine models are compared in terms of sectoral and regional CH4 emission reduction strategies, as well as resulting climate impacts. The models’ projected reduction potentials are compared to sector and technology-specific reduction potentials found in literature. Significant cost-effective and non-climate policy related reductions are projected in the reference case (10–36% compared to a “frozen emission factor” scenario in 2100). Still, compared to 2010, CH4 emissions are expected to rise steadily by 9–72% (up to 412 to 654 Mt CH4/year). Ambitious CO2 reduction measures could by themselves lead to a reduction of CH4 emissions due to a reduction of fossil fuels (22–48% compared to the reference case in 2100). However, direct CH4 mitigation is crucial and more effective in bringing down CH4 (50–74% compared to the reference case). Given the limited reduction potential, agriculture CH4 emissions are projected to constitute an increasingly larger share of total anthropogenic CH4 emissions in mitigation scenarios. Enteric fermentation in ruminants is in that respect by far the largest mitigation bottleneck later in the century with a projected 40–78% of total remaining CH4 emissions in 2100 in a strong (2 °C) climate policy case.
