    Description: Estimation of individual egg production (realized fecundity)is a key step either to understand the stock and recruit relationship or to carry out fisheries-independentassessment of spawning stock biomass using egg production methods. Many fish are highly fecund and their ovaries may weigh over a kilogram; therefore the work time can be consuming and require large quantities of toxic fixative. Recently it has been shown for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) that image analysis can automate fecundity determinationusing a power equation that links follicles per gram ovary to the mean vitellogenic follicular diameter (the autodiametric method).In this article we demonstrate the precision of the autodiametric method applied to a range of species with different spawning strategies during maturation and spawning. A new method using a solid displacement pipette to remove quantitative fecundity samples (25, 50, 100, and 200 milligram [mg]) is evaluated, as are the underlying assumptions to effectively fix and subsample the ovary. Finally, we demonstrate the interpretation of dispersed formaldehyde-fixed ovarian samples (whole mounts) to assess the presence of atretic and postovulatory follicles to replace labor intensive histology. These results can be used to estimate down regulation (production of atretic follicles) of fecundity during maturation.

    Description: Farming of Litopenaeus vannamei in the Philippines was seen as a measure to increase shrimp production in the country. Taura Syndrome Virus (TSV) is a viral pathogen reported to be associated with Litopenaeus vannamei and other shrimp species. TSV outbreak impedes the production of Litopenaeus vannamei population and other species susceptible to the virus. Detection of TSV in L. vannamei in the Philippines calls for proper mitigation and appropriate actions for aquaculture and environmental management towards sustainable development. This study embarked on the detection of TSV using a purposive sampling method. Samples showing morphological symptoms of TSV such as redness of the carapace and pleopods and necrotic gill tissue collected from sites in Luzon and Visayas in the Philippines were processed. Viral RNA was extracted from the gills, the central area of infiltration and replication site of the virus. Complementary DNA (cDNA) was synthesized from the RNA templates and were subjected to RT-PCR under specific conditions using TSV specific primers against a positive control. Selected sites in the Philippines were proven to be positive of infection as they showed morphological symptoms and RT-PCR result in having a band at around 200 base pairs (bp). Percentage of prevalence results were obtained: Bulacan with 5 out of 15 samples (33%), Batangas with 7 out of 15 samples (47%), Bohol with 1 out of 15 samples (7%) and Cebu with 2 out of 15 samples (13%). The Batangas samples showed the highest prevalence of 47% (7 out of 15 samples) that were positive of the infection. This study reported the presence of TSV in L. vannamei in the country using morphological and molecular techniques.

    Description: This study was carried out to increase information on the status of small pelagic fish species status in Lingayen Gulf. The information includes the catch per unit of effort of fishing gears catching small pelagic and the current status of the dominant small pelagic fish species using the National Stock Assessment Program (NSAP) standard data gathering of fisheries catch and effort. The results showed that almost 50% of the total fish harvest in Lingayen Gulf are small pelagics and the commercial fisheries sector contributed the largest catch. The commercial fishing gears that mostly catch small pelagics are the Danish seine and Trawl with an annual catch per unit of effort ranging from 899 to 1,186 kg/day and 65.98 to 119.77 kg/day, respectively. The municipal fishing gears, bottom set gillnet and bottom set longline had an annual catch per unit of effort ranging from 7.04-42.95 and 7.19-13.30 kg/day, respectively. The dominant small pelagic species are Decapterus maruadsi, Decapterus macrosoma, Selar crumenophthalmus, Rastrelliger brachysoma, and Rastrelliger kanagurta. The dominant species caught by commercial fishing gears are mostly juveniles while the dominant species caught by municipal fishing gears attained maturity before they are caught. Exploitation ratio (E-values) of the dominant small pelagic species in this study exceed the optimum level of 0.5, an indication of overexploitation due to high fishing pressure.

    Description: Red hind (Epinephelus guttatus) have been overfished in the Caribbean and were included with seven other regional grouper species deemed vulnerable to risk of extinction. The Puerto Rico Department of Natural and EnvironmentalResources desired to map spawning red hind aggregations within commonwealth waters as part of their resource management program for the species. Mobile hydroacoustic surveys were conducted over 3-day periods in 2002 and 2003,indexed to the full moon phase in February or March when red hind were known to aggregate. Four vessels concurrentlysampled the southwest, south, and southeast coasts of Puerto Rico in 2002. In 2003, three vessels conducted complementary surveys of the northwest, north, and northeast coasts of the island, completing a circuit of the coastal shelf-spawning habitat. These surveys indicated that red hind spawning aggregations were prevalent along the south and west coasts, and sparse along the north coast during the survey periods. Highest spawning red hindconcentrations were observed in three areas offshore of the west coast of Puerto Rico, around Mona and Desecheo islands(20,443 and 10,559 fish/km2, respectively) and in the Bajo de Cico seasonal closed area (4,544 fish/km2). Following both 2002 and 2003 surveys, a series of controlledacoustic measurements of known local fish species in net pens were conducted to assess the mean target strength(acoustic backscatter) of each group. Ten species of fish were measured, including red hind (E. guttatus), coney (E. fulvus), white grunt (Haemulon plumieri), pluma (Calamus pennatula), blue tang (Acanthurus coeruleus), squirrel fish (Holocentrus spp.), black durgeon (Melichtyhs niger), ocean file fish (Canthidermis sufflamen), ocean surgeon fish (Acanthurus bahianus), and butter grouper (Mycteroperca spp.). In general, the mean target strength results from the caged fish experiments were in agreement with published target strength length relationships, with the exception ofwhite grunt and pluma.

    Description: The study was conducted to determine other sex ratios of ablated wild-stock Penaeus monodon other than the most commonly practiced 1 male: 1 female. Four different sex ratios, 0:1, 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4 male: female were tested in four 4m diameter circular tanks for a period of 55 days. During the first run the 1 male: 2 females ratio gave: (a) the highest percentage of first (42.20%), second (30.00%) and third (33.33%) spawning; and (b) the highest total and average fecundity (3.9 million eggs and 300,692 eggs, respectively). The 1 male: 2 females ratio is recommended on the basis of highest percentage for the first, second and third spawners, total and average fecundity.
