Description: The ESA Earth Explorer CryoSat-2 was launched on 8 April 2010 to monitor the precise changes in the thickness of terrestrial ice sheets and marine floating ice. To do that, CryoSat orbits the planet at an altitude of around 720 km with a retrograde orbit inclination of 92∘ and a quasi repeat cycle of 369 d (30 d subcycle). To reach the mission goals, the CryoSat products have to meet the highest quality standards to date, achieved through continual improvements of the operational processing chains. The new CryoSat Ice Baseline-D, in operation since 27 May 2019, represents a major processor upgrade with respect to the previous Ice Baseline-C. Over land ice the new Baseline-D provides better results with respect to the previous baseline when comparing the data to a reference elevation model over the Austfonna ice cap region, improving the ascending and descending crossover statistics from 1.9 to 0.1 m. The improved processing of the star tracker measurements implemented in Baseline-D has led to a reduction in the standard deviation of the point-to-point comparison with the previous star tracker processing method implemented in Baseline-C from 3.8 to 3.7 m. Over sea ice, Baseline-D improves the quality of the retrieved heights inside and at the boundaries of the synthetic aperture radar interferometric (SARIn or SIN) acquisition mask, removing the negative freeboard pattern which is beneficial not only for freeboard retrieval but also for any application that exploits the phase information from SARIn Level 1B (L1B) products. In addition, scatter comparisons with the Beaufort Gyre Exploration Project (BGEP; https://www.whoi.edu/beaufortgyre, last access: October 2019) and Operation IceBridge (OIB; Kurtz et al., 2013) in situ measurements confirm the improvements in the Baseline-D freeboard product quality. Relative to OIB, the Baseline-D freeboard mean bias is reduced by about 8 cm, which roughly corresponds to a 60 % decrease with respect to Baseline-C. The BGEP data indicate a similar tendency with a mean draft bias lowered from 0.85 to −0.14 m. For the two in situ datasets, the root mean square deviation (RMSD) is also well reduced from 14 to 11 cm for OIB and by a factor of 2 for the BGEP. Observations over inland waters show a slight increase in the percentage of good observations in Baseline-D, generally around 5 %–10 % for most lakes. This paper provides an overview of the new Level 1 and Level 2 (L2) CryoSat Ice Baseline-D evolutions and related data quality assessment, based on results obtained from analyzing the 6-month Baseline-D test dataset released to CryoSat expert users prior to the final transfer to operations.

Notes: Abstract A family is presented in which neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) and autosomal dominant hearing loss segregate in an apparently independent way. The presence of the latter condition caused anxiety in all family members at risk for NF2 in whom hearing loss became apparent. Previously, we identified a G → A transition in the donor splice site of exon 5 of the NF2 gene in a family member with proven NF2. As expected, the mutation was present in two other family members who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for NF2. Four out of five family members at risk for NF2 developed hearing loss. Two of these had the G → A transition. The mutation was absent in the two other individuals with hearing loss and in the fifth family member without hearing loss or other clinical symptoms. In this family, the identification of the underlying NF2 gene mutation excluded NF2 as the cause of hearing loss in two potential carriers of the mutated gene. On the other hand, it enabled the identification of two carriers of the NF2 gene mutation who did not fulfill the diagnostic criteria for NF2. They will have to be monitored very carefully for the development of NF2-associated tumors. The consistent association within this family of a relatively mild clinical phenotype with the NF2 mutation, supports earlier suggestions that intrafamilial variability is small in NF2

Notes: Abstract In this study the GSTμ phenotype and ADH genotype at the ADH3 locus were investigated in a group of 39 alcoholic men with upper respiratory/digestive tract cancer: 21 with oropharyngeal cancer and 18 with laryngeal cancer. The results are compared with those of a control group of 37 alcoholic men without alcohol-related medical complications. Of the control subjects, 48% were found to be GSTμ deficient [GSTμ(–)] and 19% carried the ADH3 1/ADH3 1 genotype. In the laryngeal cancer patients, a significantly elevated frequency of both the GSTμ(–) (78%) and ADH3 1/ADH3 1 genotype (56%) was observed, relative to the control group. On the basis of this result, the risk of laryngeal cancer associated with the GSTμ(–) and ADH3 1/ ADH3 1 genotypic combination within the population of alcoholics was estimated to be 12.9 with a 95% confidence interval of 1.8–92 (P 〈 0.01) relative to alcoholic individuals who have GSTμ [GSTμ(+)] and are not ADH3 1/ADH3 1. Thus, alcoholics who are GSTμ(–) and ADH3 1/ADH3 1 have at least an 80% greater risk of developing laryngeal cancer than alcoholics who are GSTμ(+) and who are not ADH3 1/ ADH3 1. In addition, the oropharyngeal cancer patients had excess frequencies of both GSTμ(–) (62%) and ADH3 1/ ADH3 1 (43%) relative to the control group, but these excess frequencies were not statistically significant. The GSTμ(–) and ADH3 1/ADH3 1 genotypic combination may be a constitutional risk factor for laryngeal cancer among alcoholics.

Notes: States that operations and production management is deeply rooted in Brazilian education where the first course in production engineering dates from 1958. Considers the nature of publications in the field during the 1990s. Notes that the research focus in Brazil is currently on areas such as the new globalised economy and the environment.

Notes: Economic activity is becoming increasingly globalised. Multinational enterprises, which are the main drivers of that process, are reconsidering the role of their subsidiaries. In countries where the industrialisation process was heavily dependent on multinationals, such as Brazil, these changes are intrinsically relevant, as they influence the operations of local companies as well as the definition of economic and industrial policies. This paper, based on longitudinal studies of 21 leading Brazilian companies (11 subsidiaries and 10 local), identifies the different roles performed by the subsidiaries in the global competitive strategies chosen by distinct TNCs as well as the strategic and organisational changes adopted by local companies aiming to participate in global productive chains and networks. The final picture reveals that the transition to a globalised competition logically requires the development of new concepts of production systems for developed and developing countries.

Notes: [Auszug] The branched fractal structures formed by non-equilibrium electrodeposition of metals have for several years been considered as model systems for the study of branching and fractal growth processes generally. Most studies have focused on the large-scale structure of the deposits, but the ...

Notes: Abstract Immunity proteins are thought to protect bacteriocin-producing bacterial strains against the bactericidal effects of their own bacteriocin. The immunity protein which protects the lactic acid bacterium Leuconostoc mesenteroides against mesentericin Y10537 bacteriocin was detected and localized by immunofluorescence and electron microscopy, using antibodies directed against the C-terminal end of the predicted immunity protein. The antibodies recognized the immunity proteins of various strains of Leuconostoc, including Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Leuconostoc gelidum. This study demonstrated that immunity proteins produced by Leuconostoc mesenteroides accumulated in the cytoplasmic compartment of the bacteria. This is in contrast with other known immunity proteins, such as the colicin immunity proteins, which are integral membrane proteins possessing three to four transmembrane domains.
