    Description: The Multispectral Scanner (MSS) was launched on the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1) on July 23, 1972. The MSS has two calibration systems, one internal and one external. Both calibration systems have shown strong, spectrally dependent performance degradation since launch. This paper presents details on the optical system of the MSS and data on the performance degradation as a function of both spectral interval and time in orbit. The history of the MSS during tests is traced, and it is shown that hydrocarbons from an external source may have been deposited on optical surfaces in the instrument. It is postulated that these contaminant coatings may have polymerized as a result of the exposure to UV light from the sun, increasing their blue absorbtion and accounting for the observed performance degradation.

    Description: A generalized geologic evaluation of lines, localities, and features of various types that are visible on a series of radar image strips covering the Teton Range and Jackson Hole in northwestern Wyoming, is given. No attempt was made to collate a complete geologic map with the radar image at each locality. Formation names, problems of geologic interpretation, and details of stratigraphy and structure that are not directly pertinent to a study of the imagery are omitted, but reference is made to publications that contain this type of supplementary information.

    Description: A steady state dynamic response model for the radial motion of the aorta is developed from in vivo pressure-displacement and nerve stimulation experiments on canines. The model represented by a modified Van der Pol wave motion oscillator closely predicts steady state and perturbed response results. The applicability of the steady state canine aortic model to tailward acting impact forces is studied by means of the perturbed phase plane of the oscillator. The backflow through the aortic arch resulting from a specified acceleration-time profile is computed and an analysis for predicting the forced motion aortic response is presented.

    Description: The Multispectral Scanner carried by the ERTS-1 satellite (launched on July 23, 1972) is a very high resolution line scanning imaging radiometer operating in the visible and near infrared spectral regions. The instrument contains optical surfaces that are exposed to both direct and reflected sunlight, and the reflectivity and transmission of some of these surfaces have decreased in orbit. Details of the optical system are explained, and data on the degradation are reviewed as a function of both spectral interval and time in orbit. The history of the scanner during testing (when hydrocarbons from an external source may have been deposited on the optical surfaces) is also examined, and a mechanism is postulated for the observed degradation in orbit.

    Description: An automatic support system concept that isolated faults in an existing nonavionics subsystem was flight tested up to a Mach number of 3. The adaptation of the automated support concept to an existing system (the jet engine automatic inlet control system) caused most of the problems one would expect to encounter in other applications. These problems and their solutions are discussed. Criteria for integrating automatic support into the initial design of new subsystems are included in the paper. Cost effectiveness resulted from both the low maintenance of the automated system and the man-hour saving resulting from the real time diagnosis of the monitored subsystem.

    Notes: Abstract Simple approximations for the fields and propagation constants of low-order modes on circular weakly guiding fibres are derived using variational techniques. The high accuracy of these approximations for quasi-parabolic profiles is demonstrated in the case of the Gaussian profile, for which there are no analytical solutions of the scalar wave equation.

    Abstract: It seems advisable to investigate polycondensation processes extended systematically from low to high conversion by carefully chosen model systems, considering the statistical data available on the processes themselves and the relationship between structure and properties of the resulting polymers. In a previous paper (Rev. Gén. Caoutchouc Plastiques, Éd. Plastiques, 4, (1967) 111) dealing with conventional crosslinking agents, the possibility was suggested to perform polycondensation processes approaching more closely the classical random distribution. This can be achieved with symmetrical monomers having functional groups well spaced out to avoid substitution effects and cyclisation. Cyclisation is also rendered more difficult by greater stiffness of the structure of the monomers. This paper shows by some examples that, in favourable cases, the deviation from the classical random distribution can be reduced to the limits of experimental error, thus enabling the physical properties to be compared with the results of comparatively simple model calculations.
    Notes: Es ist ratsam, Polykondensationsprozesse an äußerst sorgfältig gewählten Modellsystemen zu studieren, und zwar systematisch von niedrigeren nach höheren Umsätzen, und indem man die Kenntnis der Prozesse selbst, der resultierenden Struktur der Produkte, und deren strukturgebundenen physikalischen Eigenschaften gleichzeitig auf statistischer Basis vertieft. In einem früheren Bericht (Rev. Gén. Caoutchouc Plastiques, Éd. Plastiques, 4, 1967, 111) über bekannte organische und anorganische Netzformer wurde auf die Möglichkeit hingewiesen, Polykondensationssysteme zu entwickeln, die den reinen klassischen Zufallsverteilungen in viel besserer Näherung folgen. Hierzu wählt man symmetrische Monomere mit räumlich weit auseinanderliegenden Funktionen, um Substitutionseffekte und Ringschlüsse weitgehend zu vermeiden; weiterhin werden Ringschlüsse auch durch Steifheit der Monomerstruktur sehr erschwert. In diesem Vortrag wird an einigen Beispielen belegt, daß man so tatsächlich die Abweichungen vom klassischen (cyclenfreien) Zufallsmodell in günstigen Fällen erwartungsgemäß bis zur Grenze der Unmeßbarkeit zurückdrängen kann, und daß sich das deshalb lohnt, weil man dann physikalische Eigenschaften der Produkte mit relativ einfachen Modellrechnungen vergleichen kann.

    Notes: Abstract A numerical technique, based on transforming the scalar wave equation to a finite interval before discretization is applied, is proposed for the solution of the scalar wave equation defining the modal fields and propagation constants of optical fibres. It is used to compute the propagation constants and modal fields of weakly guiding fibres of circular cross-section when the refractive index profile has a Gaussian or smoothed-out form. The smoothed-out profiles are studied because they vary continuously from the Gaussian to the step profile. Results are compared with and shown to be accurately approximated by simply explicit functions, dependent only on the fibre parameter.
