Notes: Abstract A high degree of mitotic asynchrony is reported for spontaneously arising multinucleate cells of HeLa and Pt-K1, tissue culture cell lines. Neither nuclear number, nor nuclear size nor the presence or absence of nucleoli, could be directly related to the asynchronous behaviour of the cells. Suboptimal levels of nutrients led to a higher frequency of asynchrony. A partial compartmentation of the cytoplasm could be detected in some of the multinucleate cells. The compartmentation of the cytoplasm may lead to an uneven distribution of inducer and non-inducer metabolites. All these factors together may be responsible for the high degree of mitotic asynchrony.

Notes: Abstract Contributions to the spin-lattice relaxation time (T 1) and the spin-spin relaxation time (T 2) due to critical fluctuations (CF) have been determined in para-azoxyanisole (PAA) from the corresponding proton relaxation times measured at 60 MHz over a temperature range of about 35 °K above the nematic-isotropic transition temperatureT C .In determining the CF contributions, the procedure followed here is the same as the present authors used earlier for a similar study in p-methoxybenzylidene p-n butylaniline (MBBA). Like that in MBBA at 14 MHz, a maximum in the CF contribution toT 1, has been observed. Following a recent theory we identify this contribution toT 1 arising from the “nonlocal” part of CF, and we call thisT 1)CFN. The correlation time associated with this “nonlocal” part of CF,τ CFN, has been determined at different temperatures fromT 1)CFN. The temperature dependence ofτ CFN is in good agreement with the Landau-de Gennes theory and is consistent with that observed earlier in MBBA. The temperature dependence ofT 2)CF is also in reasonable agreement with the above behavior ofτ CFN. However, ourT 2)CF data can also be fitted to a temperature dependence expected from a contribution toT 2)CF arising from the “local” part of CF, such a fitting is comparatively poorer than the former. Since ourT 2)CF data are neither sufficiently accurate nor elaborate, no attempt has been made here to separate these two contributions, “nonlocal” and “local” parts of CF, which have been predicted from theoretical considerations. A behavior similar to that of ourT 2)CF is also shown by the earlier data of Cabane and Clark obtained from14N resonance when their data are processed properly.

Notes: Summary InHibiscus cannabinus a negative association exists between the foliar spirality and the aestivation of corolla. Moreover, it is seen that the fruits developed from left-twiting flowers of left-spiralled plants and those of the right-twisting flowers of right-spiralled plants are better in quality.

Notes: Summary Electrolysis of salt solutions produces mortality of a plant-parasitic nematodeMeloidogyne incognita. The mortality depends on the nature and amount of the, products of electrochemical reactions and is enhanced in presence of Cu-electrodes. Application of magnetic fields on electric fields alters nematode mortality in ferro-magnetic electrolytes.

Notes: Summary The use of formaldehyde-Schiff's reagent as a nucleolar stain has been described. Using different digestion procedures, it was confirmed that the stain is specific for RNA. It can be suitably used as a nucleolar stain, particularly in plant materials after a short TCA extraction, which probably extracts the nonbound RNA.

Notes: Summary Orientation of Giemsa C-bands in Allium cepa was studied in both mitotic and interphase cells. It has been shown that telophase orientation of the chromosome is maintained throughout the interphase and early prophase. It has been assumed that this non-random orientation is due to anchorage of the telomeres with the nuclear membrane. Contrary to earlier observations, 2 by 2 pairing of the telomeres could not be traced in this species.

Notes: Summary The stress-concentration problem in asymmetric elasticity around a circular hole in an infinite elastic medium is analysed. Normal and tangential tractions and radial couple-stress are prescribed on the circular boundary and tractions at infinity. Complex variable technique is applied to obtain the solution of the problem. As particular cases, the solutions of the concentrated force, double force, concentrated moment and rivet problems are obtained. It has been found that the effects of the stresses and couple-stresses are governed by Poisson's ratio and two parameters which are dependent on the material property of the asymmetric medium.

Notes: [Auszug] We studied nine subjects (20-38 yr old), three normal males, three normal females and three phenotypic females with primary amenorrhoea. Before treatment the three patients had the limb proportions of eunuchs, and had no breast development or axillary hair, although a few coarse hairs were present ...
