    Description: This paper reports a numerical approach for modelling the thermal behavior and heat accumulation/liberation of sustainable cementitious composites made with Recycled Brick Aggregates (RBAs) employed as carriers for Phase-Change Materials (PCMs). In the framework of the further development of the fixed grid modelling method, classically employed for solving the well-known Stefan problem, an enthalpy-based approach and an apparent calorific capacity method have been proposed and validated. More specifically, the results of an experimental program, following an advanced incorporation and immobilization technique, developed at the Institut für Werkstoffe im Bauwesen for investigating the thermal responses of various combinations of PCM-RBAs, have been considered as the benchmark to calibrate/validate the numerical results. Promising numerical results have been obtained, and temperature simulations showed good agreement with the experimental data of the analyzed mixtures.

    Description: An accurate assessment of evapotranspiration (ET) is crucially needed at the basin scale for studying the hydrological processes and water balance especially from upstream to downstream. In the mountains, this term is poorly understood because of various challenges, including the vegetation complexity, plant diversity, lack of available data and because the in situ direct measurement of ET is difficult in complex terrain. The main objective of this work was to investigate the potential of a Two-Source-Energy-Balance model (TSEB) driven by the Landsat and MODIS data for estimating ET over a complex mountain region. The complexity is associated with the type of the vegetation canopy as well as the changes in topography. For validating purposes, a large-aperture scintillometer (LAS) was set up over a heterogeneous transect of about 1.4 km to measure sensible (H) and latent heat (LE) fluxes. Additionally, two towers of eddy covariance (EC) systems were installed along the LAS transect. First, the model was tested at the local scale against the EC measurements using multi-scale remote sensing (MODIS and Landsat) inputs at the satellite overpasses. The obtained averaged values of the root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (R) were about 72.4 Wm−2 and 0.79 and 82.0 Wm−2 and 0.52 for Landsat and MODIS data, respectively. Secondly, the potential of the TSEB model for evaluating the latent heat fluxes at large scale was investigated by aggregating the derived parameters from both satellites based on the LAS footprint. As for the local scale, the comparison of the latent heat fluxes simulated by TSEB driven by Landsat data performed well against those measured by the LAS (R = 0.69, RMSE = 68.0 Wm−2), while slightly more scattering was observed when MODIS products were used (R = 0.38, RMSE = 99.8 Wm−2). Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that (1) the TSEB model can be fairly used to estimate the evapotranspiration over the mountain regions; and (2) medium- to high-resolution inputs are a better option than coarse-resolution products for describing this kind of complex terrain.

    Notes: Abstract The enzyme catalysing the first step in the anaerobic degradation pathway of phenylacetate was purified from a denitrifying Pseudomonas strain KB 740. It catalyses the reaction phenylacetate+CoA+ATP → phenylacetyl-CoA+AMP+PPi and requires Mg2+. Phenylacetate-CoA ligase (AMP forming) was found in cells grown anaerobically with phenylacetate and nitrate. Maximal specific enzyme activity was 0.048 μmol min-1 x mg-1 protein in the mid-exponential growth phase. After 640-fold purification with 18% yield, a specific activity of 24.4 μmol min-1 mg-1 protein was achieved. The enzyme is a single polypeptide with Mr of 52 ±2 kDa. The purified enzyme shows high specificity towards the aromatic inducer substrate phenylacetate and uses ATP preferentially; Mn2+ can substitute for Mg2+. The apparent K m values for phenylacetate, CoA, and ATP are 60, 150, and 290 μM, respectively. The soluble enzyme has an optimum pH of 8.5, is insensitive to oxygen, but is rather labile and requires the presence of glycerol and/or phenylacetate for stabilization. The N-terminal amino acid sequence showed no homology to other reported CoA-ligases. The expression of the enzye was studied by immunodetection. It is present in cells grown anaerobically with phenylacetate, but not with mandelate, phenylglyoxylate, benzoate; small amounts were detected in cells grown aerobically with phenylacetate.

    Notes: Abstract Tangkuban Parahu is an active stratovolcano located 17 km north of the city of Bandung in the province west Java, Indonesia. All historical eruptive activity at this volcano has been confined to a complex of explosive summit craters. About a dozen eruptions-mostly phreatic events- and 15 other periods of unrest, indicated by earthquakes or increased thermal activity, have been noted since 1829. The last magmatic eruption occurred in 1910. In late 1983, several small phreatic explosions originated from one of the summit craters. More recently, increased hydrothermal and earthquake activity occurred from late 1985 through 1986. Tilt measurements, using a spirit-level technique, have been made every few months since February 1981 in the summit region and along the south and east flanks of the volcano. Measurements made in the summit region indicated uplift since the start of these measurements through at least 1986. From 1981 to 1983, the average tilt rate at the edges of the summit craters was 40–50 microradians per year. After the 1983 phreatic activity, the tilt rate decreased by about a factor of five. Trilateration surveys across the summit craters and on the east flank of the volcano were conducted in 1983 and 1986. Most line length changes measured during this three-year period did not exceed the expected uncertainty of the technique (4 ppm). The lack of measurable horizontal strain across the summit craters seems to contradict the several years of tilt measurements. Using a point source of dilation in an elastic half-space to model tilt measurements, the pressure center at Tangkuban Parahu is located about 1.5 km beneath the southern part of the summit craters. This is beneath the epicentral area of an earthquake swarm that occurred in late 1983. The average rate in the volume of uplift from 1981 to 1983 was 3 million m3 per year; from 1983 to 1986 it averaged about 0.4 million m3 per year. Possible causes for this uplift are increased pressure within a very shallow magma body or heating and expansion of a confined aquifier.

    Notes: Abstract The molecular basis of null alleles was investigated by cDNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in seven Tay-Sachs patients. Although mRNAs were undetectable by Northern blot, cDNA-PCR amplification allowed us to get a sufficient amount of cDNA to characterize abnormal transcripts. In two French patients (one homozygote and one compound heterozygote with a 4-bp insertion in exon 11 of the second allele) suffering an infantile form of the disease, we detected abnormal RNAs with a 17-bp insertion due to a GT to AT transition at the donor site of intron 9, resulting in the activation of a cryptic donor site in the intron. This mutation has been found in 9 out of 82 Tay-Sachs chromosomes (11%) in association with alleles responsible from different clinical courses. In the other five patients we found the 4-bp insertion in exon 11 and two nonsense mutations.

Moreover, in medium supplemented with OPP, the additional presence of one endo-polygalacturonase and two exo-polygalacturonases was detected.

    Notes: Abstract Femtosecond pulses at 496 nm were Raman-shifted in methane with 20% efficiency. The pulse duration could be reduced up to 6.5 times from 560 fs at the fundamental to 85 fs at the Stokes frequency (580nm), which is the shortest pulse duration generated in this way. It was shown experimentally that chirped-pulse Raman scattering avoids the limitations arising from self-phase modulation.
