    Notes: The melting, crystallization and dynamic mechanical behaviour of blends of bacterially produced poly[D(-)-3-hydroxybutyrate] (PHB) and poly[D(-)-3-hydroxyvalerate] (PHV) have been investigated. Results showed that melt-pressed PHB-PHV blends contained phase-separated domains in the melt which subsequently crystallized as PHB and PHV type spherulites respectively. The two melting regions detected by DTA related to separate melting of PHB and PHV crystallites, which were almost unaffected by the blend composition. The mechanical behaviour of a random copolymer of PHB/HV was compared with that of a blend of almost the same composition, and found to be markedly different.

    Notes: New dumb-bell-type fullerene adducts 2, 4, and 8a-b could be synthesized via bifunctional nitrile oxides. The [60]fullerene derivative 16 of this type was synthesized by twofold esterification with an isoxazolo[60]fullerenecarboxylic acid derivative. In the latter case the reaction was used to link the archimedic polyhedron fullerene with the platonic element cubane. When a bulky spacer between the fullerene units was used, atropisomeres 8a-b occurred. The fullerene derivative 11 with an anthracene moiety exhibited axial chirality.

    Description: Although public managers are considered to substantially influence coproduction, current research concentrates on service users and communities' perspectives, whereas the contribution of the public workers is understudied. Because direct-delivery interactions often depend on coproduction, this study explores coproduction from the perspective street-level management, that is, those who are overarchingly in charge of, and accountable for, the outputs and outcomes of the direct-delivery phase of service provision in street-level organizations. To allow for analytical and conceptual accuracy in characterizing coproduction management, analysis draws on in-depth semi-structured interviews with street-level managers in three different policy sectors: policing, education, and social services (N = 78). Managing coproduction emerged as threefold. First, clients' coproduction during direct-delivery interactions with frontline professionals, known as co-delivery, is considered the essence of the street-level organization and requires additional, ongoing, facilitating efforts. Second, securing clients' co-delivery emerged as an investment: routine efforts that are exercised with the expectation to enhance clients' long-lasting willingness to co-deliver with all the programs provided by the street-level organization, termed here 'coproduction investments.' Third, coproduction investments entail both voice and action organizational activities, which differ according to the socioeconomic level of the community served. Coproduction investments demonstrate how public managers transform coproduction principles into managerial activities, and shift attention to street-level organizations as the interstices between 'what's right' and 'what works' in coproduction.

    Notes: Using heavily methionine-substituted T4 lysozyme as an example, it is shown how the addition or deletion of a small number of methionines can simplify the location of selenium sites for use in MAD phasing. By comparing the X-ray data for a large number of singly substituted lysozymes, it is shown that the optimal amino acid to be substituted by methionine is leucine, followed, in order of preference, by phenylalanine, isoleucine and valine. The identification of leucine as the first choice agrees with the ranking suggested by the Dayhoff mutation probability, i.e. by the frequency of amino-acid substitutions in the sequences of related proteins. The ranking of the second and subsequent choices, however, differ significantly.

    Notes: Abstract  Water proton T 1 –1 measurements at magnetic fields between 0.01 and 50 MHz [nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion (NMRD) measurements] have been performed on solutions of phthalate dioxygenase (PDO) reconstituted at the catalytic iron site with copper(II) or manganese(II). The data show evidence of a weakly coordinated water molecule in CuPDO; in the presence of the substrate, phthalate, this water appears to become even less tightly bound, and an additional tightly coordinated water can be detected. In PDO reconstituted with manganese, one tightly coordinated water is detected in the presence and in the absence of phthalate. An attempt is made to reconcile these data with low-temperature near-IR magnetic circular dichroism and X-ray absorption data, which show that PDO reconstituted with iron or cobalt is six-coordinate in the absence of substrate and five-coordinate in the presence of substrate.

    Description: Evidence for gas-hydrate occurrence in the Western Black Sea is found from seismic measurements revealing bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs) of varying distinctness. From an ocean-bottom seismic data set low-resolution traveltime-tomography models of P-wave velocity vP are constructed. They serve as input for acoustic full-waveform inversion (FWI) which we apply to derive high-resolution parameter models aiding the interpretation of the seismic data for potential hydrate and gas deposits. Synthetic tests show the applicabilityof the FWI approach to robustly reconstruct vP models with a typical hydrate and gas signature. Models of S-wave velocity vS containing a hydrate signature can only be reconstructed when the parameter distribution of vS is already well known. When we add noise to the modeled data to simulate field data conditions, it prevents the reconstruction of vS completely, justifying the application of an acoustic approach. We invert for vP models from field-data of two parallel profiles of 14 km length with a distance of 1 km. Results showa characteristic velocity trend for hydrate and gas occurrence at BSR depth in the first of the analyzed profiles. We find no indications for gas accumulations below the BSR on the second profile and only weak indications for hydrate. These differences in vP signature are consistent with reflectivity behavior of the migrated seismic streamer data of both profiles where a zone of high reflectivity amplitudes is coincident with the potential gas zone derived from the FWI result. Calculating saturation estimates for the potential hydrate and gas zones yields values of up to 30% and 1.2%, respectively.

    Description: The sharp increase in seismicity over a broad region of central Oklahoma has raised concern regarding the source of the activity and its potential hazard to local communities and energy industry infrastructure. Since early 2010, numerous organizations have deployed temporary portable seismic stations in central Oklahoma in order to record the evolving seismicity. In this study, we apply a multiple-event relocation method to produce a catalog of 3,639 central Oklahoma earthquakes from late 2009 through 2014. RMT source parameters were determined for 195 of the largest and best-recorded earthquakes. Combining RMT results with relocated seismicity enabled us to determine the length, depth and style-of-faulting occurring on reactivated subsurface fault systems. Results show that the majority of earthquakes occur on near vertical, optimally oriented (NE-SW and NW-SE), strike-slip faults in the shallow crystalline basement. These are necessary first order observations required to assess the potential hazards of individual faults in Oklahoma.

A range of methods have been applied and evaluated for gait segmentation of healthy and pathological gait bouts. However, a unified evaluation of gait segmentation methods in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is missing. In this paper, we compare four prevalent gait segmentation methods in order to reveal their strengths and drawbacks in gait processing. We considered peak detection from event-based methods, two variations of dynamic time warping from template matching methods, and hierarchical hidden Markov models (hHMMs) from machine learning methods. To evaluate the methods, we included two supervised and instrumented gait tests that are widely used in the examination of Parkinsonian gait. In the first experiment, a sequence of strides from instructed straight walks was measured from 10 PD patients. In the second experiment, a more heterogeneous assessment paradigm was used from an additional 34 PD patients, including straight walks and turning strides as well as non-stride movements. The goal of the latter experiment was to evaluate the methods in challenging situations including turning strides and non-stride movements. Results showed no significant difference between the methods for the first scenario, in which all methods achieved an almost 100% accuracy in terms of F-score. Hence, we concluded that in the case of a predefined and homogeneous sequence of strides, all methods can be applied equally. However, in the second experiment the difference between methods became evident, with the hHMM obtaining a 96% F-score and significantly outperforming the other methods. The hHMM also proved promising in distinguishing between strides and non-stride movements, which is critical for clinical gait analysis. Our results indicate that both the instrumented test procedure and the required stride segmentation algorithm have to be selected adequately in order to support and complement classical clinical examination by sensor-based movement assessment.
