    Notes: Inter-organizational collaboration has been linked to a range of important outcomes for collaborating organizations. The strategy literature emphasizes the way in which collaboration between organizations results in the sharing of critical resources and facilitates knowledge transfer. The learning literature argues that collaboration not only transfers existing knowledge among organizations, but also facilitates the creation of new knowledge and produce synergistic solutions. Finally, research on networks and interorganizational politics suggests that collaboration can help organizations achieve a more central and influential position in relation to other organizations. While these effects have been identified and discussed at some length, little attention has been paid to the relationship between them and the nature of the collaborations that produce them. In this paper, we present the results of a qualitative study that examines the relationship between the effects of interorganizational collaboration and the nature of the collaborations that produce them. Based on our study of the collaborative activities of a small, nongovernmental organization (NGO) in Palestine over a four-year period, we argue that two dimensions of collaboration – embeddedness and involvement – determine the potential of a collaboration to produce one or more of these effects.

    Notes: While many aspects of the collaborative process have been discussed in the management literature, the connection between collaboration and the dynamics of institutional fields has remained largely unconsidered. Yet, collaboration is an important arena for inter–organizational interaction and, therefore, a potentially important context for the process of structuration upon which institutional fields depend. In this paper, we argue that institutionalization and collaboration are interdependent; institutional fields provide the rules and resources upon which collaboration is constructed, while collaboration provides a context for the ongoing processes of structuration that sustain the institutional fields of the participants.

There are apparatus museums at Birr and Maynooth, and a collection of early apparatus at the physics department of the Irish National University in Galway.     Notes: Abstract New methods of determining the structural groups —COOH and —CH2— have been developed. The investigation of carboxyl groups is possible both after derivatization with p-fluorophenacylbromide and by quantitative interpretation of the Fourier transform infrared (FT IR) spectra. There exists a linear relationship between the results of these two methods that is generally valid for the analysis of all brown coal components. The maximum extinction coefficient of the symmetric stretching vibration band of the CH2 groups has been determined using model substances. This allows quantification of this structural group directly from the FT IR spectrum. The results agree with the contents of methylene groups as determined by 13C-cross polarization–magic angle spinning–nuclear magnetic resonance (13C CPMAS NMR) spectroscopy. Using these methods, the COOH and CH2 groups contained in brown coals of the North Rhine region and in their bioconversion products have been quantified.

    Description: Mineral-bound Fe(II) species represent important natural reductants of pollutants in the anaerobic subsurface. At clay minerals, three types of Fe(II) species in fundamentally different chemical environments may be present simultaneously, i.e., structural Fe(II), Fe(II) complexed by surface hydroxyl groups, and Fe(II) bound by ion exchange. We investigated the accessibility and reactivity of these three types of Fe(II) species in suspensions of two different clay minerals containing either ferrous iron-bearing nontronite or iron-free hectorite. Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) exhibiting different sorption behavior on clays were used to probe the reactivity of the various types of reduced iron species. The clay treatment allowed for a preparation of nontronite and hectorite surfaces with Fe(II) adsorbed by surface hydroxyl groups at the edge surfaces. Furthermore, hectorite suspensions with additional Fe(II) bound to the ion exchange sites at the basal siloxane surfaces were set up. We found that both structural Fe(II) and Fe(II) complexed by surface hydroxyl groups of nontronite reduced the NACs to anilines. An electron balance revealed that more than 10% of the total iron in nontronite was reactive Fe(II). Fe(II) bound by ion exchange did not contribute to the observed reduction of NACs. Reversible adsorption of the NACs at the basal siloxane surface of the clays strongly retarded NAC reduction, even in the presence of high concentrations of Fe(II) bound by ion exchange to the basal siloxane surfaces. Our work shows that in natural systems a fraction of the total Fe(II) present on clays may contribute to the pool of highly reactive Fe(II) species in the subsurface. Furthermore, this work may help to distinguish between Fe(II) species of different reactivity regarding pollutant reduction. Although structural iron in clays represents only a small fraction of the total iron pool in soils and aquifers, reactive Fe(II) species originating from the reduction of structural Fe(III) in clays may contribute significantly to the biogeochemical cycling of electrons in the subsurface since it is not subject to depletion by reductive dissolution.

    Description: The NASA Glenn Research Center has been conducting in-house testing in support of NASA's Lithium-Ion Cell Verification Test Program, which is evaluating the performance of lithium-ion cells and batteries for NASA mission operations. The test program is supported by NASA's Office of Aerospace Technology under the NASA Aerospace Flight Battery Systems Program, which serves to bridge the gap between the development of technology advances and the realization of these advances into mission applications. During fiscal year 2003, much of the in-house testing effort focused on the evaluation of a flight battery originally intended for use on the Mars Surveyor Program 2001 Lander. Results of this testing will be compared with the results for similar batteries being tested at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the Naval Research Laboratory. Ultimately, this work will be used to validate lithium-ion battery technology for future space missions. The Mars Surveyor Program 2001 Lander battery was characterized at several different voltages and temperatures before life-cycle testing was begun. During characterization, the battery displayed excellent capacity and efficiency characteristics across a range of temperatures and charge/discharge conditions. Currently, the battery is undergoing lifecycle testing at 0 C and 40-percent depth of discharge under low-Earth-orbit (LEO) conditions.

    Description: NASA and Boeing North America are responsible for constructing the electrical power system for the International Space Station (ISS), which circles the Earth every 90 minutes in a low Earth orbit (LEO). For approximately 55 minutes of this orbit, the ISS is in sunlight, and for the remaining 35 minutes, the ISS is in the Earth s shadow (eclipse). The electrical power system must not only provide power during the sunlight portion by means of the solar arrays, but also store energy for use during the eclipse. Nickel-hydrogen (Ni/H2) battery cells were selected as the energy storage systems for ISS. Each battery Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU) comprises 38 individual series-connected Ni/H2 battery cells, and there are 48 battery ORU s on the ISS. On the basis of a limited Ni/H2 LEO data base on life and performance characteristics, the NASA Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field commenced testing through two test programs: one in-house and one at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, Indiana.
