    Notes: In response to the potential for negative economic and societal effects resulting from a low level of consumer confidence in food safety, it is important to know how confidence is potentially influenced by external events. The aim of this article is to describe the development of a monitor that enables changes in consumer confidence in food safety and consumer food choice behaviour to be assessed in conjunction with changes in institutional activities and food safety incidents. Results of the first assessment of longitudinal data on consumer perceptions of food safety will be presented to provide the basis for the development of such a monitor. A better understanding of the interrelationships between antecedents and behavioural consequences of changes in consumer confidence in food safety over time will improve understanding of the effectiveness of public policy, and allow the development of best practice in risk communication and risk management.

    Notes: Widespread recognition of the strategic imperative posed by a turbulent external environment has brought into focus a key challenge for firms - that of increasing involvement in innovation by the staff in the organisation. Much research has suggested that organisations that mobilise a large proportion of their staff to participate in innovation can make significant gains. Achieving this depends on a systematic process of organisational development in which the facilitative patterns of behavioural routines are extended and reinforced, so that they become a major culture change. This paper reports on progress with this organisational development methodology using a detailed case study of its use within a major mining company in South Africa. It makes use of a reference model framework to help structure and direct the change process towards enabling higher involvement in innovation. In particular it explores practical issues involved in moving a large organisation along a path of high involvement innovation.

    Notes: This paper shows the results of a survey to Spanish employees about labour mobility and its determinants. Job non-related factors are more significant than job related factors to explain the employees' labour mobility. The employee's perceptions about job satisfaction, pay fairness, and work-family conflict are more explanatory of labour mobility than traditional job-related factors like pay or social benefits.

    Notes: The concept of sustainability in general and food sustainability, in particular, entails many aspects and many interpretations. During a conference on food sustainability a broad, multidisciplinary picture was painted and many key issues were dealt with, from ecology, economy and society. In sessions on food security - the focus in developing countries - and food safety - primarily a preoccupation in developed countries - many potential trade-offs and opportunities for regional approaches were identified. The session on governance, therefore, focused on the interaction between multi-level actors, including national governments, international organisations such as WTO, the food industry and consumers. Finally, transparency was identified as one of the main issues underlying good governance. In order to improve the sustainability of food production, therefore, it was considered of the utmost importance that food multinationals transfer some form of democratic control over their global environmental policies, as part of an overall multi-level (public-private) governance ideal.

    Notes: In this paper, we will show that the debate between advocates of lean production and the socio-technical approach has concentrated too much on the design aspect of the production structure, while neglecting the development aspect of teamwork. This paper addresses the question whether it is production design or team development that explains business performance and the quality of working life. The data are taken from four departments of the Volvo truck plant in Umeå (Sweden) that is redesigning from socio-technical based assembly to line-assembly. We conclude that good design of the production structure is necessary, but not sufficient for good performance; team development is just as important, although it requires a favorable context.

    Notes: This paper presents a cheap and easy-to-produce microprehensile microrobot on chip (MMOC). This four-degree-of-freedom (DOFs) microprehensor is able to grip, hold and release submillimetric-sized objects. The research conducted relied heavily on the design of a simple and efficient monolithic piezoelectric two-DOF actuator, requiring no further motion transformation system and asking for no supplementary guiding system. The integration of all these functions in a single part eliminates nearly all assembly concerns. Each finger of the gripper is an actuator, called a duo-bimorph, which provides higher deflections than piezoelectric tubes. The paper presents the developed MMOC prototype, comments its performances and details the functioning of the duo-bimorph.

    Notes: This study examined the interactive effect of distributive justice and leader self-sacrifice on employees' organizational commitment and autocratic leadership perceptions (ALP). We propose that positive leadership styles like self-sacrifice will have a stronger impact on employees' attitudes and judgments when organizational outcomes are perceived and experienced as unfavorable or more negative. One such outcome that may turn out unfavorable is distributive justice. Findings indeed showed that leader self-sacrifice positively influenced organizational commitment and negatively ALP, but only when distributive justice was low (i.e. perceptions of unfair outcomes).

    Notes: This paper discusses some important findings from a research project on the maintainability of wet areas of high-rise non-residential, buildings. The implications of six key factors of maintainability namely water-tightness, spatial, integrity, ventilation, material and plumbing on the occurrence of 14 most common defects found in wet areas were evaluated. Problem areas evaluated include water leakage from ceiling, staining/discolouration, paint defects, cracking/spalling of concrete, cracking/debonding of tiles, fungi/algae growth, pipe leakage and corrosion. An industry wide survey was conducted and the factors including workmanship, design detailing, maintenance and material incompatibility under tropical conditions are identified and discussed.

    Notes: This paper uses an empirical study of the collaborative business relationships between Opel Portugal as a subsidiary the American automotive manufacturer General Motors and its Portuguese-based direct suppliers (PBDS) as a means of exploring the contributions of the three research traditions of supply chain management, multinational theory and, crucially, the role of the IMP approach. Within this research, the supply chain management concept of partnering is used to provide a bridge between the dyadic and network perspectives. Also, due to its potential in describing complex business networks and in capturing the nature of dyadic business relationships, the analytical tool related to the IMP work, the ARA (activities-resources-actors) model, by Häkansson and Snehota, is a major influence on the development of the conceptual framework presented in this study. The case results indicate the possibility of mapping the constructs of the partnering approach onto the ARA model to understand the dyad within a network context where the MNC's structure and operation exerts an often constraining role on the possible dyadic interactions.

    Notes: Shows the results of a survey about the antecedents of work-family conflict in a sample of Spanish employees. Analyses and discusses the influence of job-related and non-related factors. The results indicate that both groups of factors are antecedents of work-family conflict. Even though gender is not a significant variable to explain work-family conflict, the empirical study found differences at the time to explain the antecedents of men and women's work-family conflict. A few family-domain and work-domain perceptions had a strong influence on work-family conflict such as the gender roles, importance of family, job flexibility and job mental and physical requirements. Some of these perceptions suggest the influence of a culture where traditional gender roles still prevail and family as an institution is very strong. Functional mobility and educational level are also antecedents of work-family conflict. However, job category level, marital status, and social benefits do not have any influence on work-family conflict in the multivariate analysis, but the bivariate analysis showed that they have indeed an influence on the work-family conflict according to the hypotheses developed in the research framework.
