    Notes: Abstract. Results from recent studies of peatland biogeochemistry suggest that appropriate soil water sampling techniques are required in order to advance our understanding of peatland soil systems. In a comparative field experiment, concentrations of inorganic solutes and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured in soil water extracted at a depth of 10 cm beneath the surface of deep peat by three techniques: zero-tension (z-t) lysimeters, PTFE suction samplers, and polysulfone suction samplers. The majority of solute concentrations were broadly similar, but mean concentrations of silicon, DOC, iron and aluminium in water extracted by z-t lysimeters and PTFE samplers were in ratios of 1:5; 1:2; 1:5 and 1:3 respectively. Mean conductivity and concentrations of chloride and hydrogen ion were significantly larger in the z-t lysimeter samples, which had sodium, potassium and magnesium to chloride ratios that were very similar to local rainfall. The z-t lysimeters appeared to sample macropores preferentially, while the suction samplers collected micropore water.

    Notes: This article discusses some weaknesses in current research into young consumers’ abilities to comprehend and successfully manipulate food label information and describes the development of a research project through to an analysis of the pilot phase. The research programme identifies a method  of  measuring  the  effectiveness  of  state  education in enabling the next generation of consumers to make informed food choices through the provision of appropriate tools and skills, both of which are necessary to fully understand a label's informational elements within a marketing context. The article also discusses the appropriateness of a quantitative questionnaire to measure the abilities and skills of individuals through the identification of some key comprehension dimensions required by modern food consumers. Finally, the article questions the appropriateness of the context in which information is provided to food consumers. Through a continuing programme of research, it is envisaged that a more appropriate context for certain elements important in the choice of a diet that is relevant to an individual's lifestyle may be proposed.

    Notes: The bacterial TolC protein plays a common role in the expulsion of diverse molecules, which include protein toxins and antibacterial drugs, from the cell. TolC is a trimeric 12-stranded alpha/beta barrel, comprising an alpha-helical trans-periplasmic tunnel embedded in the outer membrane by a contiguous beta-barrel channel. This structure establishes a 140 A long single pore fundamentally different to other membrane proteins and presents an exit duct to substrates, large and small, engaged at specific inner membrane translocases. TolC is open to the outside medium but is closed at its periplasmic entrance. When TolC is recruited by a substrate-laden translocase, the entrance is opened to allow substrate passage through a contiguous machinery spanning the entire cell envelope, from the cytosol to the external environment. Transition to the transient open state is achieved by an iris-like mechanism in which entrance alpha-helices undergo an untwisting realignment, thought to be stabilized by interaction with periplasmic helices of the translocase. TolC family proteins are ubiquitous among gram-negative bacteria, and the conserved entrance aperture presents a possible cheomotherapeutic target in multidrug-resistant pathogens.

    Notes: Seven years of carbon dioxide flux measurements indicate that a ∼90-year-old spruce dominated forest in Maine, USA, has been sequestering 174±46 g C m−2 yr−1 (mean±1 standard deviation, nocturnal friction velocity (u*) threshold 〉0.25 m s−1). An analysis of monthly flux anomalies showed that above-average spring and fall temperatures were significantly correlated with greater monthly C uptake while above-average summer temperatures were correlated with decreased net C uptake. Summer months with significantly drier or wetter soils than normal were also characterized by lower rates of C uptake. Years with above-average C storage were thus typically characterized by warmer than average spring and fall temperatures and adequate summer soil moisture.Environmental and forest–atmosphere flux data recorded from a second tower surrounded by similar forest, but sufficiently distant that flux source regions (‘footprints’), did not overlap significantly showed almost identical temperature and solar radiation conditions, but some differences in energy partitioning could be seen. Half-hourly as well as integrated (annual) C exchange values recorded at the separate towers were very similar, with average annual net C uptake differing between the two towers by 〈6%. Interannual variability in net C exchange was found to be much greater than between tower variability. Simultaneous measurements from two towers were used to estimate flux data uncertainty from a single tower. Carbon-flux model parameters derived independently from each flux tower data set were not significantly different, demonstrating that flux towers can provide a robust method for establishing C exchange model parameters.

    Notes: Four slides, the Ana, Joan, Nuna and Jersi slides, have been imaged on the seafloor along the Balearic margin of the Eivissa Channel in the western Mediterranean. They have areas of up to 16 km2 and occur in water depths ranging between 600 and 900 m. Volumes range from 0·14 to 0·4 km3. Their headwall scarps, internal architecture and associated deposits are characterized using a combination of swath bathymetry data and very high-resolution seismic reflection profiles. In general, they show horseshoe-shaped headwall scarps and distinct depositional lobes with positive relief. Internally, the slide bodies are mostly composed of transparent seismic facies. Chaotic facies are observed at the toe of some of the slides, and blocks of coherent stratified facies embedded in the slide deposit have also been identified. The reflection profiles demonstrate that the four slides share the same slip horizon, which corresponds to a distinctive continuous, high-amplitude reflector. Furthermore, the geometry of the headwall scars of the Nuna and Ana slides reveals evidence of pockmarks, and fluid escape features are also present further upslope. This indicates a possible link between fluid escape features and destabilization of the upper sediment layers. In addition, these well-characterized slides demonstrate the pitfalls associated with calculating the volume of the slide masses using headwall scarp heights and the assumed preslide seafloor topography in the absence of seismic data. The internal structure also demonstrates that transport distances within the slides are generally low and poorly characterized by headwall scarp to slide toe lengths.
