    Notes: A 212.8 nm laser initiates the reaction H+D2→HD+D in a mixture of HBr and D2. A second laser state-selectively ionizes the HD(v′=3,j′) reaction product, allowing a determination of the speed distribution and the relative cross section in a velocity-sensitive time-of-flight mass spectrometer. From these measurements we construct differential and integral cross sections for H+D2→HD(v′=3,j′=0–7)+D at 1.64±0.05 eV collision energy. Although the integral cross sections do not show any unusual features, the differential cross sections reveal forward-scattered features that have not been observed in crossed-beam experiments. An analysis of the scattering features in HD(v′=3,j′=1–4) suggests that these states are dominated by classical hard-sphere scattering. This hard-sphere (direct recoil) mechanism, however, cannot account for the dominant forward scattering observed in HD(v′=3,j′=0). © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present a method to establish a correlation between the crystalline structure and the fluorescence properties of isolated semiconductor nanocrystals. By using ultrathin silicon nitride substrates with markers, we have localized and investigated the same particles in both a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM) and a confocal optical microscope. We have found that the observation of strong fluorescence emission does not require single domain particles. Additionally, we have correlated the size and shape of a particle as determined by TEM and its spectral properties like emission wavelength and spectral diffusion. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Galactan: galactan galactosyltransferase (GGT), an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of the long-chain raffinose family of oligosaccharides (RFOs) in Ajuga reptans, catalyses the transfer of an α-galactosyl residue from one molecule of RFO to another one resulting in the next higher RFO oligomer. This novel galactinol (α-galactosyl-myo-inositol)-independent α-galactosyltransferase is responsible for the accumulation of long-chain RFOs in vivo. Warm treatment (20°C) of excised leaves resulted in a 34-fold increase of RFO concentration and a 200-fold increase of GGT activity after 28 days. Cold treatment (10°C/3°C day/night) resulted in a 26- and 130-fold increase, respectively. These data support the role of GGT as a key enzyme in the synthesis and accumulation of long-chain RFOs. GGT was purified from leaves in a 4-step procedure which involved fractionated precipitation with ammonium sulphate as well as lectin affinity, anion exchange, and size-exclusion chromatography and resulted in a 200-fold purification. Purified GGT had an isoelectric point of 4.7, a pH optimum around 5, and its transferase reaction displayed saturable concentration dependence for both raffinose (Km = 42 mM) and stachyose (Km = 58 mM). GGT is a glycoprotein with a 10% glycan portion. The native molecular mass was 212 kDa as determined by size-exclusion chromatography. Purified GGT showed one single active band after native PAGE or IEF separation, respectively, which separated into three bands on SDS-PAGE at 48 kDa, 66 kDa, and 60 kDa. The amino acid sequence of four tryptic peptides obtained from the major 48-kDa band showed a high homology to plant α-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.22) sequences. GGT differed, however, in its substrate specificity from α-galactosidases; it neither hydrolysed nor transferred α-galactosyl-groups from melibiose, galactinol, UDP-galactose, manninotriose, and manninotetrose. Galactinol, sucrose, and galactose inhibited the GGT reaction considerably at 10–50 mM.

    Notes: A 6-wk feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of various dietary lipid levels on quantitative requirements for essential fatty acids (EFA) by juvenile Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. A factorial experiment with three dietary lipid levels (3, 6, and 9%) and three dietary levels (0.5, 1, and 2%) of a mixture of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) was used. An increase in quantitative requirements for EFA with increasing supplementation level of dietary lipid was not demonstrated. Results suggested that this shrimp species appeared to be able to satisfy its n-3 HUFA requirements when they were supplied at 0.5% of diet; this dietary level may be even lowered. Moreover, depressed growth was observed in shrimp fed diets with the HUFA mixture supplemented at 2%. In addition, the present study showed that increasing the dietary lipid level had an effect on lipid composition of shrimp, by increasing lipid deposition in hepatopancreas and muscle tissue, but without a significant effect on growth.

    Notes: Fuzzy logic principles and neural networks, both being computational intelligence technologies, can be combined to produce synergetic effects through the formation of a unified approach which takes advantage of the benefits and at the same time counterbalances the flaws of the two technologies. In this paper, a fuzzy neural approach, which is characterized by its ability to suggest the appropriate adjustment of product quantity from various suppliers with different quality standards in a supply chain network, is presented. This approach is particularly useful in situations where multiple supply chain partners are involved to achieve the common objective of producing products to the best satisfaction of customer demands at the lowest possible cost. To validate the feasibility of this approach, a test has been conducted based on the proposed fuzzy neural approach with the objective of suggesting the appropriate selection of suppliers and the optimal quantity allocated to them to meet the required quality standards. This paper describes the methodology for the deployment of this proposed hybrid approach to enhance the machine intelligence of a supply chain network with the description of a case study to exemplify its underlying principles.

    Notes: Abstract Recent studies of state-resolved angular distributions show the participation of reactive scattering resonances in the simplest chemical reaction. This review is intended for those who wish to learn about the state-of-the-art in the study of the H + H2 reaction family that has made this breakthrough possible. This review is also intended for those who wish to gain insight into the nature of reactive scattering resonances. Following a tour across several fields of physics and chemistry where the concept of resonance has been crucial for the understanding of new phenomena, we offer an operational definition and taxonomy of reactive scattering resonances. We introduce simple intuitive models to illustrate each resonance type. We focus next on the last decade of H + H2 reaction dynamics. Emphasis is placed on the various experimental approaches that have been applied to the search for resonance behavior in the H + H2 reaction family. We conclude by sketching the road ahead in the study of H + H2 reactive scattering resonances.

    Notes: 1. We used mtDNA sequence variation to estimate population genetic structure between and among water strider populations of Potamobates williamsi and P. sumaco in the Ecuadorian Amazon.2. Sequencing of the COI mitochondrial gene revealed 16 haplotypes, which were summarised into four haplotype groups. P. williamsi and P. sumaco shared two common and widespread haplotypes.3. Population structure was moderate and gene flow was low. Both air and river distances were significantly correlated with gene flow and, thus, indicative of isolation by distance.4. The genetic structure within and among populations of P. williamsi and P. sumaco was probably not influenced by the dynamic tropical lotic system.
