    Notes: We describe the photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and Fourier transform infrared absorbance spectroscopy characterization of a large set of InAs/GaSb type-II strained layer superlattice (SLS) samples. The samples are designed to probe the effect of GaSb layer thickness on the optical properties of the SLS, while the InAs-layer thickness is held fixed. As the GaSb layer thickness is increased, we observe a spectral blue shift of the PL peaks that is accompanied by an increase in intensity, narrower linewidths, and a large reduction in the temperature sensitivity of the luminescence. These effects occur despite a significant reduction in the electron-hole wave function overlap as the GaSb layer thickness is increased. In addition, we compare the results of empirical pseudopotential model (EPM) calculations to the observed blueshift of the primary band gap. The EPM calculations are found to be in very good agreement with the observed data. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report optically pumped lasing at λ∼3.4 μm from an integrated absorber structure in which the electrons confined in the InAs quantum wells recombine with holes in adjacent InGaAsSb layers to provide the gain. This type-II laser exhibits an estimated photon-to-photon conversion rate of ∼24% at 85 K. The self-consistent empirical pseudopotential method calculations suggest that Coulomb attraction can lead to a strong enhancement in carrier overlap, and the resulting small shift in transition energy is consistent with that observed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: During the summer of 2000 (June-July) 14 CTD and ADCP transects perpendicular to the West Spitsbergen Current and along the western border of the Barents Sea were made. The measurements covered the area between 69° 43’and 80° N and 01° and 20° E. The main purpose was to follow changes in volume, heat and salt content of Atlantic Water (AW) on its way north. The strongest and most stable flow of AW was located along the continental slope where northward flowing currents exceeding 40 cm/sec were measured. A few weaker northward branches were also found to the west of the slope. South-directed currents were recorded between them and eddy-like mesoscale structures were commonly observed. Measured by vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (VM-ADCP), the net northward transport of AW volume in the upper 136 m layer decreased from nearly 6 Sv at the southernmost transect to below 1 Sv at a latitude of 78° 50’N. Similarly, heat transport drops from about 173 TW to about 9 TW and relative salt transport (over 34.92 psu) from 980 × 103 kg/sec to 14 × 103 kg/sec. Transport in the southern direction prevails at the transect located between 79° 07’and 79° 30’N. The calculated baroclinic geostrophic transport of AW volume, heat and salt in the upper 1000 m layer behaves similarly. East-directed transport dominates at the Barents Sea boundary while westward flow prevails on the western side of the West Spitsbergen Current.

    Notes: Approaches to coastal management have focused increasingly on ‘soft’engineering methods such as beach/foreshore recharge or the managed realignment of coastal defences. In this context, the creation/maintenance of salt marshes is often seen as being of ecological and flood-defence importance. However, until recently, no field data of wave attenuation over Northern European salt marshes had been available; therefore the debate on the sea-defence value of salt marshes has remained highly speculative. This paper (a) reviews results from a field and numerical modelling study at Stiffkey, north Norfolk, (b) presents a scientifically based argument for the evaluation of salt marshes as part of sea-defence schemes, and (c) discusses the relationship between hydrodynamic parameters, salt-marsh surface characteristics, and possible management implications and engineering guidelines.

    Notes: Sequence analysis of the mitochondrial DNA control region was used to clarify the taxonomic status of two coastal bottlenose dolphin populations from southeastern Australia currently classified as Tursiops truncatus. A 368-bp segment of the control region of 57 biopsy-sampled, photo-identified dolphins of Jervis Bay and Port Stephens was compared to published sequences of T. truncatus and T. aduncus from different oceanic regions. Sequence divergence between haplotypes from southeastern Australia and T. aduncus was much lower than that from T. truncatus. Analyses using two different methods of phylogenetic reconstruction unambiguously placed all haplotypes from southeastern Australia in a group composed exclusively of T. aduncus. The results strongly indicated that these two bottlenose dolphin populations belong to T. aduncus, extending the range of the species to subtropical waters of the Western South Pacific Ocean.

    Notes: Nanocrystalline zirconia with a grain size of ∼5 nm was surface-doped with 3 and 30 mol% alumina by chemical vapor synthesis using two sequential hot-wall reactors. The powders were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption. Aqueous dispersions were studied by zeta-potential measurements and photocorrelation spectroscopy. Green and sintered ceramic bodies were investigated by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, XRD, and nitrogen adsorption. Zirconia surface-doped with 3 mol% of alumina displays substantial changes in dispersability and sinterability compared with pure nanocrystalline zirconia.

    Notes: In situ X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) investigations were carried out at chlorine K edge and palladium L3 edge to study the mechanism of the thermal decomposition of ammonium hexachloropalladate. The spectra show a characteristic feature for the initial step that might be explained as the formation of the precursor via ligand exchange (Cl ⇒ NH3). Multiple scattering calculations (Feff 8) for the Cl K, Pd and Rh L3 edges were successful in simulating the XANES spectra of the precursor as well as the reference compounds (NH4)2[PdCl4] and (NH4)3[RhCl6].
