    Notizen: Abstract  The genomic organization and chromosomal distributions of two abundant tandemly repeated DNA sequences, dpTa1 and pSc119.2, were examined in six wild Hordeum taxa, representing the four basic genomes of the genus, by Southern and fluorescence in situ hybridization. The dpTa1 probe hybridized to between 30 and 60 sites on the chromosomes of all five diploid species studied, but hybridization patterns differed among the species. Hybridization of the pSc119.2 sequence to the chromosomes and Southern blots of digested DNA detected signals in Hordeum bulbosum, Hordeum chilense, Hordeum marinum and Hordeum murinum 4x, but not in Hordeum murinum 2x and Hordeum vulgare ssp. spontaneum. A maximum of one pSc119.2 signal was observed in the terminal or subterminal region of each chromosome arm in the species carrying this sequence. The species carrying the same I-genome differed in the presence (Hordeum bulbosum) or absence (Hordeum spontaneum) of pSc119.2. The presence of pSc119.2 in the tetraploid cytotype of Hordeum murinum, but its absence in the diploid cytotype, suggests that the tetraploid is not likely to be a simple autotetraploid of the diploid. Data about the inter- and intra-specific variation of the two independent repetitive DNA sequences give information about both the interrelationships of the species and the evolution of the repetitive sequences.

    Notizen: A theoretical investigation of the ground state electronic structure of InAs/GaAs quantum confined structures is presented. Energy levels of cuboids and pyramidal shaped dots are calculated using a single-band, constant-confining-potential model that in former applications has proved to reproduce well both the predictions of very sophisticated treatments and several features of many experimental photoluminescence spectra. A connection rule between their ground state energies is found which allows the calculation of the energy levels of pyramidal dots using those of cuboids of suitably chosen dimensions, whose solution requires considerably less computational effort. The purpose of this work is to provide experimentalists with a versatile and simple method to analyze their spectra. As an example, this rule is then applied to successfully reproduce the position of the ground state transition peaks of some experimental photoluminescence spectra of self-assembled pyramidal dots. Furthermore the rule is used to predict the dimensions of a pyramidal dot, starting from the knowledge of the ground state transition energy and an estimate for the aspect ratio Q. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Meteorological measurements of surface pressure to better than 1 mbar are routinely required in surface pressures of typically 1000 mbar, and detecting small pressure changes is important for forecasting. An inexpensive pressure sensor provides the basis of a barometer suitable for such general meteorological use. Signal-conditioning circuitry has been added to allow typical surface sea-level pressure variations to be resolved to 0.1 mbar using a ±5 V 12-bit analog to digital system. The sensor excitation voltage is shown to track the sensor's temperature closely, and this is extracted to provide a temperature-compensation signal. When combined with a nonlinearity correction system and a digital display, this gives a portable barometer capable of reading to ±0.5 mbar (over the range of 930–1020 mbar) for temperatures between 0 and 25 °C. The final display reading includes the temperature compensation by using a panel meter in ratio mode. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Calibration of ultralow current ammeters deployed in atmospheric ion counters requires stable current references operating at high source impedance. Using standard precision components, this current reference generates equal bipolar currents of nominally ±500 fA, cyclically for 32 s each. The currents were found to be stable to 2 fA over the temperature range −20 to 20 °C, typical of atmospheric conditions. The output current is delivered via a capacitor, and by arranging for the capacitor to be guarded at ground potential when the system is not generating a current, the reference can be permanently connected to an electrometer with minimal leakage. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Mirror facets of broad area AlGaAs SQW 808 nm lasers with fast degradation of the output power have been investigated by photoluminescence microscopy (PLM), electroluminescence microscopy, and micro-photocurrent spectroscopy techniques. Over 2000 images of the photoluminescent light emitted from the facets of approximately 20 degraded laser bars have been made. Repeating patterns associated with the degradation have been noted and classified. Degraded lasers have dark lines on the mirror facet surface which are inclined from the epitaxial plane by 55°. Pairs of such lines often form V-shaped patterns. The orientation of the observed features suggest they are planar or line defects lying the the {111} crystallographic planes. The defects demonstrate a reduction in the lifetime of nonequilibrium electron–hole pairs and increased density of states in the forbidden gap of the active region of the laser structure, and are directly related to laser failure. Observations of the evolution in size and contrast of PLM patterns with ageing suggest the defects were initially created in the active region side of the laser structures during crystal growth or during the mounting procedure, and later propagate in the {111} planes, stimulated by the lasing action. We interpret the V formation to be a way to relax a compressive strain in the epitaxial plane. A dislocation on the {111} planes could actually translate the portion of the crystal bounded by the V upwards (away from the mounting of the crystal), in response to compressive strain. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Accurate measurements of atmospheric ions are desirable in order to investigate atmospheric aerosol processes. A cylindrical capacitor ion counter is described which has a flexible computerized control system, to allow selection of ion mobility by changing the bias voltage across the capacitor. Ion measurements obtained correlate well with the ionization rate measured with an adjacent Geiger counter in clean air. Measurements of air ions using the device in current and voltage decay modes show consistent results. The collecting electrode is exposed directly in the air stream to be sampled, eliminating diffusive losses in intake tubes. The system can measure ion concentrations from 20 ions cm−3 (including typical atmospheric concentrations) and can sample ions rapidly. These characteristics enable comprehensive air conductivity measurements to be made. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
