Notes: Abstract Highly substituted arenesulfonates are chemically stable compounds with a range of industrial applications, and they are widely regarded as being poorly degradable. We did enrichment cultures for bacteria able to utilise the sulfonate moiety of 14 compounds, and we obtained mixed cultures that were able to desulfonate each compound. The products formed were usually identified as the corresponding phenol, but because we could not obtain pure cultures, we followed up these findings with quantitative work in pure cultures of, e.g., Pseudomonas putida S-313, which generated the same phenols from the compounds studied. Many of these phenols are known to be biodegradable, or to be subject to binding to soil components. We thus presume that the capacity to degrade aromatic sulfonates extensively is widespread in the environment, even though the degradative capacity is spread over several organisms and conditions.

Notes: Abstract Pleurotus ostreatus is a hetertothallic homobasidiomycete whose mating is controlled by a bifactorial tetrapolar genetic system. Although this mechanism is well accepted, there is a lack of knowledge about its molecular basis, as the incompatibility loci have not been cloned and sequenced. As a first step towards the elucidation of the molecular structure of the A-type incompatibility locus, molecular markers have been isolated which correspond to genomic sequences present in different strains of P. ostreatus but not in other higher basidiomycetae. These markers reveal single-copy genetic regions in which some degree of genetic variability can be detected.

Notes: Abstract The electrical and thermal conductivities of an YbInCu4 polycrystalline sample have been measured within the 4.2–300-K range. The behavior of the heat conductivity has been found to change sharply above and below T v =70–75 K, the temperature corresponding to an isostructural phase transition from a state with an integral valence (T〉T v ) to a mixed-valence state (T〈T v ) of Yb ions. A preliminary qualitative analysis of the results is presented.

Notes: We describe a parameter extraction technique for the simultaneous determination of physical parameters in nonideal Schottky barrier, p-n and p-i-n diodes. These include the ideality factor, saturation current, barrier height, and linear or nonlinear series, and parallel leakage resistances. The suggested technique which deals with the extraction of bias independent parameters makes use of the forward biased current–voltage (I–V) characteristics and the voltage-dependent differential slope curve α(V)=[d(ln I)]/[d(ln V)]. The method allows (a) establishment of the current flow mechanisms at low and high bias levels, (b) extensive of the permissible ranges of determined parameters beyond what is possible in other published methods, and (c) to automation and computerization of the measurement processes. The method is verified experimentally using metal–semiconductor structures based on Si, InGaP, and HgCdTe as well as an InGaAs/InGaAsP multiple quantum well laser diode exemplifying a p-n junction. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Using high resolution neutron scattering on a powder sample of HoNi2 11B2C magnetoelastic effects are observed in this compound for the first time. At low temperatures the tetragonal lattice is distorted along the [110] direction, in which the long-range ordered Ho moments are aligned. The length of the unit cell in [110] direction is shortened by about 0.19% compared to its length in [1¯10] direction. This lattice distortion is considered to be related to the existence of the commensurate c-axis modulated antiferromagnetic structure. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Layers of Ga0.25In0.75P were grown on InP by metalorganic molecular beam epitaxy and studied by ion channeling and asymmetric high-resolution x-ray diffraction. The angular difference between the substrate and the layer channeling angles agreed with the corresponding angular difference calculated from the x-ray results. Negligible relaxation was found in Ga0.25In0.75P layers up to a thickness of 50 nm. Thicker layers were found to be partially relaxed. In the channeling experiments an additional minimum in the substrate angular scan profile at an angle corresponding roughly to the layer's minimum yield was found. This extra minimum was attributed to the steering effect at the strained GaInP/InP interface [S. Hashimoto, Y. Q. Feng, W M. Gibson, L. J. Schowalter, and B. D. Hunt, Nucl. Instrum. Methods B 13, 45 (1986)], and was confirmed by a comparison with the x-ray diffraction measurements. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The feasibility of inducing a compressive residual stress in the matrix of a Nicalon-fiber-reinforced BMAS-glass-ceramic-matrix composite through a creep-load transfer treatment was studied. Specimens were crept at 1100°C under constant tensile load to cause load transfer from the matrix to the fibers, then cooled under load. Upon removal of the load at room temperature, the matrix was put into compression by the elastic recovery of the fibers. This compressive residual stress in the matrix increased the room-temperature proportional limit stress of the composite. The increase in the proportional limit stress was found to be dependent upon the applied creep stress, with an increase in creep stress resulting in an increase in the proportional limit stress. Acoustic emission results showed that the onset of significant matrix cracking correlated closely to the proportional limit stress. Changes in the state of residual stress in the matrix were supported by X-ray diffraction results. Fracture surfaces of all specimens exhibited fiber pullout behavior, indicating that the creep-load transfer process did not embrittle the fiber/matrix interface.

Notes: A multimedia learning environment would appear to benefit from an intelligent tutoring system that draws on didactic expertise, knowledge of the program structure, and knowledge of the learner's previous activities. On the other hand, one may argue against a tutor because of the damaging effects on learner autonomy: the tutor may hamper genuine learning by taking the learner by the hand, whereas what the learner needs is to have sufficient space to move freely through material in an explorative rather than an executive mode, generating her own queries and finding her own solutions. It is argued that tutoring may be a necessary stage on the road to autonomy.

Notes: Abstract. We study cubature formulas for d-dimensional integrals with a high trigonometric degree. To obtain a trigonometric degree $\ell$ in dimension d, we need about $d^\ell/\ell !$ function values if d is large. Only a small number of arithmetical operations is needed to construct the cubature formulas using Smolyak's technique. We also compare different methods to obtain formulas with high trigonometric degree.
