Notizen: We have developed an interatomic potential to investigate structural properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride. The interatomic potential used the Tersoff functional form to describe the Si–Si, Si–N, Si–H, N–H, and H–H interactions. The fitting parameters for all these interactions were found with a set of ab initio and experimental results of the silicon nitride crystalline phase, and of molecules involving hydrogen. We investigated the structural properties of unhydrogenated and hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride through Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that depending on the nitrogen content, hydrogen has a different chemical preference to bind to either nitrogen or silicon, which is corroborated by experimental findings. Besides, hydrogen incorporation reduced considerably the concentration of undercoordinated atoms in the material, and consequently the concentration of dangling bonds. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A novel realization of the classical SU(2) algebra is introduced for the Dirac relativistic hydrogen atom defining a set of operators that allow the factorization of the problem. An extra phase is needed as a new variable in order to define the algebra. We take advantage of the operators to solve the Dirac equation using algebraic methods. A similar path to the one used in the angular momentum case is used; hence, the radial eigenfunctions so calculated comprise nonunitary representations of the algebra. One of the interesting properties of such nonunitary representations is that they are not labeled by integer nor by half-integer numbers, as occurs in the usual angular momentum representation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: hrp gene expression in the phytopathogenic bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum GMI1000 is induced through the HrpB regulator in minimal medium and upon co-culture with plant cell suspensions. The putative outer membrane protein PrhA is specifically involved in hrp gene activation in the presence of plant cells and has been proposed to be a receptor of a plant-dependent signal transduction pathway. Here, we report on the identification of two regulatory genes, hrpG and prhJlocated at the right-hand end of the hrp gene cluster, that are required for full pathogenicity. HrpG belongs to the OmpR subclass of two-component response regulators and is homologous to HrpG, the activator of hrp genes in Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria. PrhJ is a novel hrp regulatory protein, sharing homology with the LuxR/UhpA family of transcriptional activators. As for HrpG of X. c. pv. vesicatoria, HrpG is required for hrp gene expression in minimal medium, but, in addition, we show that it also controls hrpB gene activation upon co-culture with Arabidopsis thaliana and tomato cell suspensions. In contrast, PrhJ is specifically involved in hrp gene expression in the presence of plant cells. hrpG and prhJ gene transcription is plant cell inducible through the PrhA-dependent pathway. From these results, we propose a regulatory cascade in which plant cell signal(s) sensed by PrhA are transduced to the prhJ gene, whose predicted product controls hrpG gene expression. HrpG then activates the hrpB regulatory gene, and, subsequently, the remaining hrp transcriptional units in all known inducing conditions.

Notizen: Connectedness is a central characteristic of industrial networks with significant methodological implications. One of the most important implications has to do with the choice of the sampling unit. This paper introduces the concept of an issue-based net and suggests its use as a unit of analysis in networks studies. An issue-based net can be defined as a net of relationships amongst actors who are concerned with a particular issue through mutual or conflicting interests. Using a research project on the dynamics of the port wine industry in Portugal, the paper elaborates on the use of such a sampling unit as a way of understanding processes of change mainly driven by interaction amongst groups of interests.

Notizen: Abstract Several 9-(2-R phenyl)xanthenediones have been synthesized and the x-ray diffraction structure for the 2-methylphenyl derivative (4b) has been determined. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n, with a = 11.729 (3), b = 9.674 (3), c = 14.628 (4) Å, and β = 106.30°. It presents a partially hydrogenated xanthene system in distorted boat conformation for the heterocyclic central ring, and an almost ideal envelope conformation for the outer rings. The aromatic substituent at the ninth position is at 84° in angle with the xanthene system.

Notizen: Abstract This paper presents a complete characterization of the local dynamics for optimal controlproblems in three‐dimensional systems of ordinary differential equations by using geometricalmethods. The particular structure of the Jacobian implies that the sixth‐order characteristicpolynomial is equivalent to a composition of two lower‐order polynomials, which are solvableby radicals. The classification problem for local dynamics is addressed by finding partitions, over an intermediate three‐dimensional space, which are homomorphic to the subspaces tangentto the complex, center and stable sub‐manifolds. The main results are: a local stability theoremand necessary conditions for the existence of fold, Hopf, double‐fold and fold‐Hopf bifurcations.

Notizen: Abstract A set of YEp Saccharomyces cerevisiae-based, integrative Hansenula polymorpha plasmids was constructed to express lacZ gene under yeast gene promoters. The HpLEU2 and HpURA3 genes were used both as markers and to target the integration of plasmids into the corresponding H. polymorpha genome locus. The frequency of transformation reached with these plasmids linearised either in HpLEU2 or HpURA3 was around 100 transformants per microgram of plasmid DNA; in all transformants checked by Southern blotting the plasmid was integrated into the genome locus corresponding to the gene plasmid marker. PCR showed that about 50% of the transformants contained more than one plasmid copy per genome. Experiments carried out using the developed plasmids to determine the strength of the gene promoters involved in nitrate assimilation in H. polymorpha revealed that, in the presence of nitrate, the nitrate reductase gene promoter (YNR1) was the strongest, followed by nitrite reductase (YNI1) and nitrate transporter (YNT1).

Notizen: Abstract  To enhance the level of resistance to insects in tropical maize germplasm we have developed techniques to successfully transform elite tropical maize inbred based on the activity of specific cryI proteins against four major maize pests – corn earworm, fall armyworm, southwestern corn borer and sugarcane borer. Constructs containing cryIAb or cryIAc synthetic genes were used. To generate transgenic plants we have established methods for biolistic bombardment and the selection and regeneration of immature embryos and calli from the elite tropical lines CML72, CML216, CML323, CML327 and hybrids. Transgenic plants resistant to the herbicide BastaTM contained the bands for the cry, bar and gus genes as detected by Southern blot analyses. A simple leaf bioassay presented varying levels of resistance to Southwestern corn borer of transgenic tropical maize carrying the cryIAc gene. Analyses of the progenies confirmed the sexual transmission of the introduced genes and their stable expression.
