    Beschreibung: The effect of wall inertia on the self-excited oscillations in a collapsible channel flow is investigated by solving the full coupled two-dimensional membrane-flow equations. This is the continuation of a previous study in which self-excited oscillations were predicted in an asymmetric channel with a tensioned massless elastic membrane (Luo & Pedley 1996). It is found that a different type of self-excited oscillation, a form of flutter, is superposed on the original large-amplitude, low-frequency oscillations. Unlike the tension-induced oscillations, the flutter has high frequency, and grows with time from a small amplitude until it dominates the original slower mode. The critical value of tension below which oscillations arise (at fixed Reynolds number) is found to increase as the wall inertia is increased. The rate at which energy is (a) dissipated in the flow field and (b) transferred to the wall during the flutter is discussed, and results at different parameter values are compared with those of a massless membrane. There is also a discussion of whether the onset of flutter, or that of the slower oscillations, is correlated with the appearance of flow limitation, as is thought to be the case in the context of wheezing during forced expiration of air from the lungs.

    Beschreibung: Complex bioconvection patterns are observed when a suspension of the oxytactic bacterium Bacillus subtilis is placed in a chamber with its upper surface open to the atmosphere. The patterns form because the bacteria are denser than water and vim upwards (up an oxygen gradient) on average. This results in an unstable density distribution and an overturning instability. The pattern formation is dependent on depth and experiments in a tilted chamber have shown that as the depth increases the first patterns formed are hexagons in which the fluid flows down in the centre. The linear stability of this system was analysed by Hillesdon & Pedley (1996) who und that the system is unstable if the Rayleigh number Γ exceeds a critical value, which depends on the wavenumber k of the disturbance as well as on the values of other parameters. Hillesdon & Pedley found that the critical wavenumber kc, could be either zero or non-zero, depending on the parameter values. In this paper we carry out a weakly nonlinear analysis to determine the relative ability of hexagon and roll patterns formed at the onset of bioconvection. The analysis is different in the two cases kc ≠ 0 and kc = 0. For the kc ≠ 0 case (which appears to be more relevant experimentally) the model does predict down hexagons, but only for a certain range of parameter values. Hence the analysis allows us to refine previous parameter estimates. For the kc = 0 case we carry out a two-dimensional analysis and derive an equation describing the evolution of the horizontal planform function.

    Beschreibung: In parts of peninsular India, sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) is grown during the dry season using water stored in the root zone. The optimum application of nitrogen is difficult to assess because no comprehensive model exists for the interaction of water and N. To explore this system as a basis for modelling in the first instance and ultimately for better management, sorghum (cv. SPH–280) was grown in the post-rainy season at ICRISAT (Andhra Pradesh, India) with and without irrigation and at six rates of nitrogen from zero to 150 kg/ha applied before sowing. The biomass of top components was measured weekly and of roots every 2 weeks. Interception of solar radiation was monitored continuously in all treatments.Leaf expansion was strongly influenced both by water and by N, whereas specific leaf area was almost independent of treatment. In the irrigated treatment, the Biomass Radiation Coefficient (e) for the main growth period was almost independent of N application at 1·3–1·4 g/MJ and was also independent of leaf N. In consequence, the main source of differences in yield was a decrease in radiation interception with decreasing N. In contrast, without irrigation, biomass, yield, e and leaf N were all maximal at 60 kg/ha N.At 33 days after emergence (DAE), root mass was almost independent of N whether water had been applied or not, but was somewhat smaller with irrigation. Later, root, leaf, and panicle mass all responded to N and to water, but stem mass was unresponsive to N with irrigation. There was evidence of translocation from stem to grain in most treatments. With irrigation, a maximum grain yield of 4·8 t/ha was obtained at 150 kg/ha N and without irrigation the maximum was 3·2 t/ha at 90 kg/ha.

    Beschreibung: To date, little molecular genetic research has been conducted in Lolium and the current study is the first investigation of diversity in ribosomal DNA (rDNA) among perennial ryegrass cultivars. Ribosomal DNA probes derived from the intergenic spacer (IGS–M) and transcribed (COD–M) regions of mustard (Sinapis alba) were used to examine 35 perennial ryegrass (L. perenne L.) cultivars for genetic diversity using RFLP methodology. Analysis of digested genomic DNA on Southern blots revealed only 10 cultivars with unique RFLP patterns. Genetic diversity was exclusively associated with the IGS–M probe, as the cultivars were all indistinguishable when examined with the COD–M probe. This low incidence of distinctions was not expected, given that the 35 cultivars were known genetically distinct entities, representing the very wide range of the major phenotypic and physiological characteristics present in commercial stocks. Furthermore, the forage cultivars were proportionately less polymorphic in comparison to the amenity cultivars. This was also unexpected as amenity cultivars are recognized as a more closely clustered group than the forage cultivars, based on morphological characteristics. The potential use of rDNA for assessing cultivar diversity and breeding histories in perennial ryegrass is considered.

    Beschreibung: During rainless weather following a monsoon, sorghum (Sorghum bicolor cv. SPH–280) was grown on a Vertisol either unirrigated throughout growth or irrigated for 7 weeks after emergence and rainfed thereafter. Before sowing, ammonium sulphate was applied at six rates from 0 to 150 kg/ha N. Roots were sampled every 2 weeks to determine biomass and root length density as a function of depth. Every week, soil water content in all treatments was measured gravimetrically to a depth of 0·23 m and with a neutron probe from 0·3 to 1·5 m.Below 0·45 m, volumetric water content was a negative exponential function of time after roots arrived and the maximum depth of extraction moved downwards at 2–5 cm per day. In the dry treatment, the extraction ‘front’ lagged behind the deepest roots by c. 12 days initially but the two fronts eventually converged. Irrigation delayed the descent of the extraction front by c. 20 days but thereafter it appeared to descend faster than without irrigation. Averaged over N rates, the time constant of the exponential function was inversely related to the root length density, lv, decreasing with depth from about 20 to 10 days as lv increased from 2·5 to 4·0 km/m3.The biomass[ratio ]water ratio was almost independent of N but increased from a mean of 5·3 g dry matter per kg water in the dry treatments to 6·9 g/kg with irrigation. When normalized by the seasonal mean difference in vapour pressure deficit within irrigated and unirrigated plots, the ratios were 13·1 and 13·3 kPa g per kg water, respectively.

    Beschreibung: Values of the strain-rate tensor represented at a 20 m length scale are found to explain the pattern and orientation of crevasses in a 0.13 km2 reach of Worthington Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A. The flow field of the reach is constructed from surveyed displacements of 110 markers spaced 20-30 m apart. A velocity gradient method is then used to calculate values of the principal strain-rate axes at the nodes of a 20 m x 20 m orthogonal grid. Crevasses in the study reach are of two types, splaying and transverse, and are everywhere normal to the trajectories of greatest (most tensile) principal strain rate. Splaying crevasses exist where the longitudinal strain rate (x) is ≤ 0 and transverse crevasses are present under longitudinally extending flow (i.e. x 〉 0). The orientation of crevasses changes in the down-glacier direction, but the calculated rotation by the flow field does not account for this change in orientation. Observations suggest that individual crevasses represent local values of the regional flow field and are transient on the time-scale of 1-2 years; they are not persistent features that are translated and rotated by flow. Crevasse patterns are thus found to be a useful tool for mapping the strain-rate tensor in this reach of a temperate valley glacier.
