    Notes: Abstract  HLA-DRB6 is one of the human major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes present in DR1, DR2, and DR10 haplotypes (approximately 26% of individuals). It shows several anomalies in human and non-human primates, including exon 2 stop codons (non-randomly grouped between codons 74 and 94) and a promoter region, and an exon 1 coming from an inserted retrovirus. It has been shown that not only chimpanzee but also human Mhc-DRB6 lack the usual 3’ untranslated (UT) polyadenylation signal, and in the present work it was found that the human DRB6 gene coming from an HLA-DR2 haplotype is effectively transcribed after transfection in mouse L cells, and that HLA-DRB6 molecules may be expressed on the cell surface. DRB6 transcription level is remarkably lower in human than in chimpanzee. Moreover, their exons 1 (both taken from the 3’LTR region of a mammary tumor retrovirus) are also different; this shows that these viral insertions may be an important mechanism for different evolutionary changes in orthologous genes of different species. The pathways by which DRB6 molecules may be expressed on the membrane are unclear but other examples of truncated protein expression have also been described, even within the human major histocompatibility complex (i. e., in HLA-G). Finally, the presence of mature HLA-DRB6 mRNA molecules supports the notion that splicing may take place even in the absence of a canonical 3’UT polyadenylation signal.

    Notes: Abstract Several phototrophic sulfur bacteria were identified preliminarily through the analysis of the low-molecular-weight RNA fraction (lmwRNA) of bacterial cells. This fraction includes the ribosomal 5S RNA and several transfer RNAs. These molecules were separated by high-resolution electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels, and the resulting band patterns were used as fingerprints for the identification of the organisms. We examined a large number of well-characterized reference strains together with a broad range of purple sulfur bacterial isolates from freshwater and marine environments. A cluster analysis was run using the similarity matrix calculated from the band patterns. Despite the shortcomings of the method, close relatives were clustered together yielding a number of groups consistent with the phylogenetic arrangement established through the analyses of a few available 16S rRNA gene sequences. Thus, the classification obtained gives further support to rearrangement of the group as the analyses of 16S rRNA gene sequences had previously suggested. We conclude that the analysis of lmwRNA band patterns is a rapid and simple tool for grouping and preliminarily identifying new isolates of phototrophic sulfur bacteria.

    Notes: A combined ab initio+nuclear dynamics study is performed to theoretically analyze the intramolecular H-atom transfer process in 5-aminotropolone in both the ground (S0) and first excited (S1) singlet electronic states. A complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method is used to optimize the geometries. Energies are then corrected through the second order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory. These results are used to build up reduced bidimensional energy surfaces so that the nuclear wave functions for the nuclear motions in both electronic states are obtained. In particular we have analyzed the six isotopomers that result from deuteration of the amino and hydroxy groups of 5-aminotropolone. It is found that for symmetric structures (−OH/−NH2, −OH/−ND2, −OD/−NH2, and −OD/−ND2), the two lowest vibrational levels in both S0 and S1 appear as a quasidegenerated tunneling doublet. The tunneling splitting in S0 is much lower so that the doublet at the origin, seen in the fluorescence excitation spectra of 5-aminotropolone, can be entirely assigned to the S1 state. In agreement with the experimental findings, this splitting greatly diminishes when the transferring hydrogen is substituted by a deuterium, whereas deuteration of the amino group produces only a modest decrease of such a splitting. A quite different result is found for the nonsymmetric isotopically substituted structures (−OH/−NHD and −OD/−NHD), as the isotope induced asymmetry, combined with the high energy barrier in the S0 potential energy surface, leads to a complete localization of the two lowest vibrational wave functions in S0. On the other hand, for S1 the asymmetry and energy barriers are low enough so that an important degree of delocalization of the two lowest vibrational wave functions is found. These results are again in agreement with the presence of an isotope induced quartet in the fluorescence excitation spectra of these species. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The water content was measured by microwave-, oven-, and freeze-drying in different vegetables like beans, corn, potato, alfalfa, garlic, and onions. Apart from beans and bean shells, all procedures resulted in similar values. Oven-drying seemed to be less suitable for beans. In samples which were in equilibrium with the laboratory environment for a longer time, the correction factor to dry mass was determined using a freeze-drying device, infrared-, microwave- and oven-drying. All the procedures yielded similar values for this factor.

    Notes: Abstract The relationship between chromosomal nondisjunction and semen quality was studied in two groups of males who differ highly in their semen quality: 12 individuals with low-quality semen caused by varicocele, and 8 subjects with high-quality semen, selected from sperm donors for in vitro fertilization. Chromosomal nondisjunction was inferred from the rate of disomy found in mature sperm cells. To determine the rate of disomy, we applied fluorescence in situ hybridization using satellite-specific probes for chromosomes 1, 15, 18, X and Y. In sperm cells of males with low-quality semen, the mean rate of disomy for each of the autosomes and of hetero-disomy for the sex chromosomes (XY) was significantly higher than that observed in the high-quality semen samples: more than 15-fold higher for chromosomes 1 and 15, and 7-fold higher for chromosomes 18 and XY. Yet, the homo-disomy rate for each of the sex chromosomes (XX and YY) was almost the same in both types of semen. The large discrepancy between the low- and high-quality semen in the rate of sex chromosome hetero-disomy versus the similar rate of homo-disomy strongly suggests that the abnormal chromosomal segregation in meiocytes of males with low-quality semen resulted from chromosomal nondisjunction at the first meiotic division. The results indicate that men showing poor semen quality are at an increased risk for meiotic nondisjunction, similar to women at the end of their reproductive years.

    Notes: Abstract We have obtained near-infrared (JK) imaging for 67 star-forming galaxies from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid survey. Aperture photometry at one and three disk-scale lengths have been performed on the J, K and r-band images. By comparing the r - J, J - K colors and equivalent widths of Hα with evolutionary synthesis models we derive the mass of newly formed stars, which is typically a 1 per cent of the galaxy stellar mass. The galaxy stellar masses obtained range between 3×109 and 3×1011 M⊙. The distribution of burst strengths and specific star formation rates indicate a low level of star formation activity.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied the velocity field of the Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy Mrk86 using an Hα Fabry-Perot image and 14 long-slit optical spectra. From the ionized gas velocities measured we have found that Mrk86 follows a solid-body rotation law with a central angular velocity of 34 ± 5 km s-1 kpc-1. The comparison of the modeled rotation curve with our velocity data indicates a clear dominance of the stellar mass component over the dark matter. Related with the galaxy most intense star forming knot, a very strong gradient steeping is observed. Finally, we give kinematic evidence for the Mrk86-C expanding bubble.

    Notes: Abstract Studies were previously made of the excess molar enthalpies, Hm E, at 298.15 K and normal atmospheric pressure of the ternary mixtures (ethyl propanoate or 3-pentanone) + (n-hexane) + (n-decane, n-dodecane or n-tetradecane) and (1-propanol) + (3-pentanone) + (n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane, 1-hexanol or 1-heptanol). In the present work, experimental values of Hm E were correlated through use of the Cibulka and Nagata equations, and a new correlation equation is proposed. Experimental data were compared with the predictions of the UNIFAC I (version of Tassios), UNIFAC II (version of Larsen) and Nitta-Chao group contribution models. Hm E values were used to test several empirical predictive methods, both symmetric (Kohler, Jacob-Fitzner, Colinet and Knobeloch-Schwartz), and asymmetric (Tsao-Smith, Toop, Scatchard, Hillert and Mathieson-Tynne).
