    Notes: The magnetic properties of iron atoms implanted into a sapphire crystal at a dose from 4×1016 to 1×1017 Fe/cm2 were investigated using conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy at low temperature. It was confirmed that the components in the Mössbauer spectra which have been assigned to the Fe4+ state so far by other researchers are caused by fine particles of metallic iron, and about 75% of the implanted iron atoms stabilize in the form of fine particles of α iron at high implantation dose. Growth of the fine particles was simulated with a computer, and the expected Mössbauer spectra were calculated considering the influence of the nearest neighbors and next-nearest neighbors on the magnetic hyperfine field of the iron atoms. The simulated spectra agrees well with the experimentally observed spectra on the whole. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A radiation pyrometer in conjunction with a two-stage light gas gun has been used to measure shock temperatures of soda-lime glass in the pressure range 54–109 GPa. This pyrometer consists of two parts, i.e., an optical multichannel analyzer which measures the radiation spectrum over the visible range (∼450 nm window) and a four-channel photomultiplier tube system which records the time-varying behavior of shock temperatures. The measured radiation spectra are compared with the Planck function to estimate the shock temperatures and emissivities. Obtained spectra are well fit by the Planck function with moderate emissivities, indicating that relatively homogeneous thermal radiation is the main component of radiation. Obtained shock temperatures range from 2800 (100) to 5700 (300) K and they seem to represent shock temperatures of liquefied soda-lime glass (melt). The Hugoniot is well described by a linear relation, us=0.14(21)+1.92(5)up km/s. It is deduced that the radiation from liquids under shock compression, in contrast to the radiation from solids under shock compression, is more thermal and fits the Planck function well, even at lower temperatures. This is because the radiation spectrum of solids under compression often shows nonthermal radiation due to heterogeneous deformation, while the radiation spectrum of liquids under compression could not have such a nonthermal component. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A 24 h incubation study was conducted in situ in Manly Dam reservoir, Sydney, Australia. The study aimed to evaluate the relative effectiveness of grazing on phytoplankton by a resident macrozooplankton community, dominated by the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia and some copepods, in comparison with grazing by added, non-resident Daphnia carinata in the absence of the resident macrozooplankton community. Although there was some variability in the measured grazing rates among incubation bottles (volume: 1.28 L), D. carinata with a mean body size of 30.8 μg dry weight were more efficient grazers than the reservoir macrozooplankton community with a mean body size of 2.5 μg dry weight. The weight-specific clearance rate of D. carinata was 2–65 times higher than that of the resident reservoir community for five taxa of reservoir phytoplankton examined. In comparing the evidence from the literature on the limited ability of D. carinata to graze on cyanobacteria, a management strategy using D. carinata for the reduction of phytoplankton biomass may need to be considered separately from one designed to specifically control undesirable taxa, such as the cyanobacteria Microcystis and Anabaena.

    Notes: The beam commissioning of the SPring-8 synchrotron was started in December 1996. In the first ten days, the coarse tuning of the pulse magnets for beam injection from the linac, and the excitation pattern of the dipole and the quadrupole magnets, were accomplished during energy ramping of the beam. The acceleration of the beam up to 8 GeV proceeded smoothly. From January to February 1997, the fine-tuning of the synchrotron was continued and the operating parameters of all of the synchrotron equipment were decided.

    Notes: Abstract The Aspergillus nidulans hapC gene was expressed as a fusion protein with MalE or glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in Escherichia coli, and used for the purification of HapC and the preparation of anti-HapC antiserum. The CCAAT-binding factor AnCP/AnCF contains a component with an approximate molecular mass of 32 kDa that cross-reacts with the antibody. The MalE-HapC fusion protein was able to replace authentic HapC in AnCP when incubated under appropriate conditions. Furthermore, reconstitution experiments with recombinant HapC, yHAP2 and yHAP5 polypeptides showed that all three polypeptides were required for the assembly of a complex capable of binding to CCAAT-containing taaG2 promoter DNA. The relationship between AnCP/AnCF and the Saccharomyces cerevisiae HAP complex is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Carrot somatic embryogenesis was strongly inhibited in high-cell-density cultures. This inhibition was not caused by depletion of nutrients or physical damage but by factor(s) released into the culture medium from cells during culture. A conditioned medium prepared by eliminating cells after high-cell-density culture inhibited somatic embryogenesis. The degree of inhibition increased with the amount of conditioned medium. A dialysis experiment revealed that the molecular weight of the inhibiting factor(s) was below 3,500. We also found that the conditioned medium contained a high-molecular-weight factor(s), which stimulated somatic embryogenesis.

A modular symbol is the fundamental class of a totally geodesic submanifold $ \Gamma'\backslash G'/K' $ embedded in a locally Riemannian symmetric space $ \Gamma \backslash G / K $ , which is defined by a subsymmetric space $ G'/ K' \hookrightarrow G / K $ . In this paper, we consider the modular symbol defined by a semisimple symmetric pair (G,G'), and prove a vanishing theorem with respect to the $ \pi $ -component $ (\pi \in \widehat {G}) $ in the Matsushima-Murakami formula based on the discretely decomposable theorem of the restriction $ \pi |_{G'} $ . In particular, we determine explicitly the middle Hodge components of certain totally real modular symbols on the locally Hermitian symmetric spaces of type IV.

    Notes: Abstract. Nuclear interaction and charge-changing cross sections were measured for 950 ⋅A MeV 20N, 20O, 20F, 20Ne, 20Na and 20Mg beams incident on a carbon target. The experimental results are compared to other data, in particular to those obtained for stable nuclei. Root mean square nuclear matter radii and upper limits of root mean square proton radii are derived from the experimental data. Evidence is presented for the existence of a neutron skin in 20N.
