    Condition of larval and juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus ) from estuarine nursery habitats (1997)

    Notes: Abstract RNA:DNA ratios of larval and juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) collected from nursery habitats in the Aransas Estuary, Texas, in 1994 were quantified using a highly sensitive ethidium-bromide fluorometric technique. RNA:DNA ratios of wild red drum were evaluated by comparing individual values to a linear regression model derived for starved laboratory-reared red drum. Wild red drum were in relatively good condition with 〈5% of the RNA:DNA ratios within or below the 95% prediction interval of 4 to 5 d starved red drum. A multiple-regression model explained 54% of the variability in the RNA:DNA ratio of wild red drum, and identified length and water temperature (midday) as significant factors. RNA:DNA ratios increased with fish length [≃1.1 mm−1, over the size range investigated (5␣to 20 mm)]. The effect of temperature on the RNA: DNA ratio was assessed on different sampling trips, and ratios increased with increasing temperature. Abundance of larval and juvenile red drum in the Aransas Estuary varied as a function of both habitat (shoal grass Halodule wrightii, turtle grass Thalassia testudinum) and site (Aransas Bay, Redfish Bay); however, no differences in RNA:DNA ratios were detected between habitats or between sites. It is postulated that the nutritional condition of newly settled red drum from the Aransas Estuary in 1994 was relatively high, and that starvation was of minor importance.

    Notes: Summary Standard laboratory posted-offer markets respond slowly and incompletely to demand shocks. In these one-sided markets, where sellers control the setting of prices, very little information is transmitted via the process of exchange. For this reason, traders have trouble distinguishing randomness in their own experience from changes in market fundamentals. This paper reports the results of twelve laboratory markets conducted to assess whether some common variants to standard posted-offer rules can correct the adjustment deficiences. Although discounting, multiple postings and excess demand information all improve performance, we find that response remains poor, and efficiencies low.

    Notes: Abstract The length scales for QCD and for nuclear physics are about the same, both about 1 fermi, and this directly motivates a search for a QCD explanation of nuclear phenomena, beginning with the deuteron. We first review the theoretical tools and results relevant to nuclear QCD, and then discuss data for several reactions. In particular, the remarkable data on deuteron photodisintegration agree with the naive perturbative QCD predictions for their scaling behavior and disagree with predictions from traditional approaches. This may be the first distinctive signature wherein considering the quark substructure in a nucleus is crucial in explaining some phenomenon.

    Notes: The ability to discriminate successfully among cultures of all species of the Listeria genus by infrared spectroscopy in combination with canonical variate analysis was confirmed. The robustness of the method was demonstrated by showing that the separation of L. monocytogenes and L. grayi was hardly affected by variations in broth medium, incubation temperature, incubation time and cell washing procedure. Discrimination among 24 strains of L. monocytogenes according to serotype allowed two groups to be recognised, one comprising serotypes 4 and 4b and the other containing serotypes 1, 1/2b and 1/2c. When strain variation was included in the species discrimination model, the classification of all the L. monocytogenes strains was virtually 100% correct.

    Notes: Abstract We focus on the implications of movement, landscape variables, and spatial heterogeneity for food web dynamics. Movements of nutrients, detritus, prey, and consumers among habitats are ubiquitous in diverse biomes and can strongly influence population, consumer-resource, food web, and community dynamics. Nutrient and detrital subsidies usually increase primary and secondary productivity, both directly and indirectly. Prey subsidies, by movement of either prey or predators, usually enhance predator abundance beyond what local resources can support. Top-down effects occur when spatially subsidized consumers affect local resources by suppressing key resources and occasionally by initiating trophic cascades. Effects on community dynamics vary with the relative amount of input, the trophic roles of the mobile and recipient entities, and the local food web structure. Landscape variables such as the perimeter/area ratio of the focal habitat, permeability of habitat boundaries, and relative productivity of trophically connected habitats affect the degree and importance of spatial subsidization.
