    Notes: Abstract Starting with the high functionalized trisilane SiClMe(SiCl2Me)2 and tetrasilane SiMe(SiCl2Me)3 several octa- and decasilane dendrimers containing directly neighboured branchings were prepared. In these compounds the 29Si NMR chemical shifts of the different silyl groups are shifted towards lower field compared with those of analogous groups in tetra- or hexasilanes. This observation is a helpful tool for the characterization of further dendritic oligomers by 29Si NMR.

    Notes: Abstract Silica modified with benzene was investigated by infrared and solid state 13C cross-polarization magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C CP MAS NMR). Whereas infrared spectroscopy did not allow to distinguish between phenyl and polyphenyl groups, this was possible by solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose. To predict the degree of crosslinking from formaldehyde-stressed hard gelatin capsules (HGCs) using near-infrared spectrophotometry (NIR). Methods. HGCs were exposed to a 150 ppb atmosphere of formaldehyde for 2.25,4.60,9.42, 16.0 and 24.0 hours. The capsules were filled with fresh amoxicillin, placed in a 90° conical reflector cone, and scanned in a NIR spectrophotometer. Principal component regression (PCR) was employed to analyze the spectra of the intact capsules. Dissolution profiles were then obtained for each experimental group. Results. The dissolution of amoxicillin from the capsules at pH 1.2 was found to decrease with increasing time of exposure to the formaldehyde atmosphere. A set of principal components (PCs) was formed by a linear combination of the absorbance values at each wavelength scanned. A good correlation was established (r2 = 0.963) when PC values from the NIR spectra of the HGCs were regressed against percentage of amoxicillin dissolved at 45 minutes, at pH 1.2. Water content of the capsules was found to be the largest determinant in the variation between HGC spectra at each exposure time. Conclusions. NIR spectrophotometry, combined with PCR, was successful at not only predicting dissolution of HGCs exposed to formaldehyde, but also at determining which wavelengths contributed most to spectral variation of these stressed HGCs.

    Notes: Abstract Retrotransposons are present in high copy number in many plant genomes. They show a considerable degree of sequence heterogeneity and insertional polymorphism, both within and between species. We describe here a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based method which exploits this polymorphism for the generation of molecular markers in barley. The method produces amplified fragments containing a Bare–1-like retrotransposon long terminal repeat (LTR) sequence at one end and a flanking host restriction site at the other. The level of polymorphism is higher than that revealed by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) in barley. Segregation data for 55 fragments, which were polymorphic in a doubled haploid barley population, were analysed alongside an existing framework of some 400 other markers. The markers showed a widespread distribution over the seven linkage groups, which is consistent with the distribution of the Bare–1 class of retrotransposons in the barley genome based on in situ hybridisation data. The potential applicability of this method to the mapping of other multicopy sequences in plants is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Segregation of 850 polymorphic AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism) fragments was followed in three different doubled haploid (DH) barley populations, Dicktoo × Morex (DM), Igri × Franka (IF) and Blenheim × E224/3 (BE), which had previously been used to construct linkage maps using other molecular markers. The final maps consisted of 310, 655 and 474 markers, of which 234, 194 and 376, respectively, were AFLPs. A comparison of profiles from the parental lines identified 51 similar-sized AFLPs segregating in both DM and IF populations, 20 in the DM and BE populations and 18 in the IF and BE populations. Eight segregated in all three. Analysis of the complete datasets for each of the populations using Joinmap V.2. indicated that in general terms each of the AFLPs which were polymorphic in more than one population mapped to the same genetic locus. The number of co-dominant markers segregating in a single population ranged from 6% for DM to 12.6% for IF. These results are discussed in the context of using AFLP in genetic linkage and diversity studies.

    Notes: Abstract This paper begins with a brief statistical analysis to establish the significant contribution of cooking equipment fires to fire losses and injuries in Canadian homes. Due to lack of comprehensive fire loss data for Canadian homes, further analysis is focused on Alberta data. The most frequent ignition scenario, based on a top-down analysis of Alberta home fires, was the ignition of overheated cooking oil in pots, deep-fat fryers, or pans heated on stove tops. These fires also accounted for the majority of home fire injuries. Fire characteristics of cooking oils, which point to the importance of maintaining oil temperatures below their flash points, and thermostatically controlled deep-fat fryers as the best available solution to the problem are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract To gain a better understanding of the relations between root elongation and the amount of Ca2+ bound to the plasma membrane (PM), melon plants were grown in aerated solutions containing different concentrations of CaCl2 with various concentrations of NaCl or mannitol. With increasing external concentrations of NaCl or mannitol, root elongation was suppressed. Addition of CaCl2 to the external medium alleviated the inhibition of root elongation by high concentrations of Na+, but not of mannitol. Root elongation in media containing high concentrations of NaCl was correlated with the computed amount of Ca2+ bound to the PM. A model describing relative root elongation (RRL) under salt stress was developed. This model takes into account the osmotic potential in the growing solution (based on the mannitol experiments) and the computed amount of Ca2+ bound to the PM. Calcium binding was calculated by applying a Gouy-Chapman-Stern sorption model using the same parameters deduced from studies on PM vesicles. This model combines electrostatic theory with competitive binding at the PM surface. The model for RRL allowed the computation of a critical value for the fraction of negative sites binding Ca2+ on the PM needed for nearly optimal (95%) root elongation. Any decrease below this critical value decreased the RRL. Root elongation of Honey Dew (salt-resistant cv.) was greater than that of Eshkolit Ha'Amaqim (salt-sensitive cv.) under NaCl stress. Nearly optimal root growth for Honey Dew and Eshkolit Ha'Amaqim occurred when 40% and 51% of total membrane charged sites were bound by Ca2+, respectively. The effect of osmotic potential on the suppression of root elongation was the same for the two cultivars. To our knowledge, this report provides the first fully quantitative estimates of PM-bound Ca2+ relative to salt toxicity.

    Notes: Abstract Parallelization promises to allow increasing performance demand from users of scientific computation codes. In this article we discuss implementation of parallelization techniques in industrial computation codes for applications in Fluid Mechanics (N3S) and Structural Mechanics (Code_ASTER). We outline the gains afforded by parallelization on a Cray C98 machine in production mode, using a single version of the program running in sequential or in parallel mode, with minimum modifications to the initial code. Parallelization is applied at the discretion of the user, for whom no specialist knowledge of this technique is assumed.
