Notizen: The relative densities of high-voltage stress-generated traps near the anode and cathode in 10-nm-thick silicon oxides have been measured after both positive and negative gate voltage stressing. The density of traps near the stress anode and cathode were approximately equal after negative gate voltage stressing. The density of traps near the stress cathode was higher than near the stress anode after positive gate voltage stressing. These results implied that impact ionization near the anode was not a significant generator of traps in 10-nm-thick oxides. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The infrared spectrum of the rare gas–spherical top complex Ne–SiH4 has been recorded in a supersonic jet in the region of the SiH4 ν3 triply degenerate stretching vibration at ∼2189 cm−1. In contrast to the previously measured Ar–SiH4 spectrum which showed almost equal rotational spacings within each band (corresponding to transitions between different internal rotor states of SiH4 within the complex), the Ne–SiH4 spectrum is complex with no obvious regular band structure. However, by analogy with the Ar–SiH4 spectrum, four bands of the Ne–SiH4 have been assigned and analyzed in terms of Hamiltonians incorporating Coriolis interaction between the angular momentum of the SiH4 monomer unit and the overall end over end rotation of the complex. These bands correlate with the SiH4 R(0) (K=0←0, K=1←0) and P(1) (K=0←0, K=0←1) transitions. Derived rotational constants demonstrate that the neon–silane separation (∼4.13 A(ring) in the ground vibrational state) is larger than expected by analogy with Ar–SiH4, indicative of nearly free internal rotation by the silane monomer unit in Ne–SiH4. The smaller anisotropy of Ne–SiH4 compared with Ar–SiH4 results in a new angular momentum coupling scheme. Transitions arising from 22Ne–SiH4 correlating to SiH4 R(0) have also been observed and fitted; the higher than anticipated intensities demonstrate a novel isotope enrichment effect in the supersonic jet which is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A study is presented of the low-n (n=1,2,3) magnetohydrodynamic stability of equilibria with reverse shear safety factor profiles. The low-n stability boundaries are found to be characterized by resonance structures due to internal so-called "infernal'' mode types of instabilities. The parametric dependence of shear reversal width and depth, current, and pressure gradient on the beta limit are determined by using profile models that allow each parameter to be varied independently. Reverse magnetic shear is found to have a stabilizing influence for modes with toroidal mode numbers n≥2 leading to the possibility of improved β limits in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Plasma Phys. Controlled Nucl. Fusion Res. 26, 11 (1984)]. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Tl2Ba2Ca1Cu2Ox thin films with excellent alignment have been grown on CeO2 buffered R-plane sapphire using an ex situ anneal step in argon atmospheres at temperatures of 720–740 °C. With this low-temperature process we have overcome the serious problem of reaction layers being formed at the CeO2/Tl2Ba2Ca1Cu2Ox interface, which can degrade film properties. The presence of a sharp CeO2/Tl2Ba2Ca1Cu2Ox interface has been confirmed by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and high resolution electron microscopy observations. Films have well connected morphologies, with critical temperature (Tc) values of up to 101.6 K and critical current density (Jc) values of up to 1.25×105 A cm−2. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract. Currently there is growing interest in the restoration of drained peatlands in Britain. In order to investigate some of the effects of changes in land management practices on the biogeochemistry of peatlands, a field experiment was designed to manipulate the hydrological conditions in a naturally drained acid gully mire in Mid-Wales. We report preliminary results of the effects of experimentally rewetting the mire on the hydrochemistry of bromide in the peat-water. Results show that rewetting had a dramatic effect on the concentrations of bromide, which increased substantially. Peak values approached 1 mg/dm3 in some samples following rewetting, compared with typical values 〈 0.05 mg/dm3 under the drained conditions. Bromide was positively and significantly correlated with Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) in the peat-water, which suggests that Br- is derived from breakdown of organic matter in the reducing conditions following rewetting. The bromide mobilized by rewetting may be leached out of the system and/or re-assimilated by the wetland vegetation. Further monitoring is needed to determine whether the observed hydrochemical response of bromide to rewetting of the mire has any longer-term effects.

Notizen: 1. Caridina zebra is a common atyid shrimp in some tropical rainforest streams in far north Queensland, Australia. Genetic variation at five allozyme loci was used to estimate the level of dispersal among populations of this species, within and between stream systems. Shrimps were sampled from nine streams in the Tully River catchment and two headwater streams in the adjacent Herbert River catchment in an area under consideration for extensive hydroelectric development.2. High levels of genetic differentiation were recorded among most populations which suggests that, like other fully aquatic species, movement is limited to a very small spatial scale.3. In the Tully catchment, populations of shrimp from streams with confluences at high altitude showed less genetic differentiation than those from streams which directly entered the lower river. Dispersal between the latter streams is clearly limited by the presence of large waterfalls and cascades.4. Adjacent stream populations were often highly differentiated, despite their close proximity, suggesting that overland dispersal is unlikely. However, populations of shrimp in the two streams in the Herbert catchment were strikingly similar in genetic structure to those in adjacent headwater streams of the Tully. Such similarity may reflect relatively recent changes in drainage patterns.

Notizen: Abstract The majority of marine populations are demographically open; their replenishment is largely or exclusively dependent on a supply of juveniles from the plankton. In spite of much recent research, no consensus has yet been reached regarding the importance of recruitment relative to other demographic processes in determining local population densities. We argue 1. that demographic theory suggests that, except under restrictive and unlikely conditions, recruitment must influence local population density to some extent. Therefore, 2. the question as to whether the size of a particular population is limited by recruitment is misguided. Finally, 3. the effect of recruitment on population size can be difficult to detect but is nonetheless real. A major weakness of most existing studies is a lack of attention to the survival of recruits over appropriate scales of time and space. Acknowledgment of the multifactorial determination of population density should guide the design of future experimental studies of the demography of open populations.

Notizen: This feature is in three parts: the first two are case histories of the contrasting experiences of two Western companies which expanded abroad for the first time in the mid-1990s, into different countries in Eastern Europe. One is so far successful, the other not. The third section draws out the implications of these experiences: although still quite risky, investment in Central and Eastern Europe can already be made to pay by firms that enter as part of a well-conceived and financed global strategy. Particular benefits are lower labour costs and access to untapped markets.

Notizen: Abstract: A knowledge base management system (KBMS) realises a combination of techniques found in database management systems and knowledge-based systems. At the data model and knowledge representation level, many systems of this kind constitute a marriage of the relational data model and the rule-based reasoning. Experience has shown that either approach is restricted in the way it can express the demanding information and knowledge structures required for applications like decision support systems. Two new technologies offer an exciting new integrated approach to knowledge management. Object-oriented database management systems (OODBMS) provide an object model that supports powerful abstraction mechanisms to facilitate the modelling of highly structured information. Whereas case-based reasoning (CBR) systems are knowledge bases which organise their capabilities around a memory of past cases and the notion of similarity. Both types of system are built upon two fundamental concepts: 1) the retrieval of entities with potentially complex structure, called objects in the former, and cases in the latter type of system; 2) the organisation of those entities in collections with common characteristics. In an OODBMS such collections are termed extents, and in CBR they are usually called categories. In either system, the conceptual meta notion to represent both, objects as well as extents, and cases as well as categories, is the class.Revolving around a Conceptual Case Class and extending a standard object model, this paper proposes a novel and general approach to represent case-knowledge and to build KBMSs. The work presented here is a spin-off of the design of an object query language within the ESPRIT project Lynx.
