Notes: Abstract The pilchards (genus Sardinops), one of the major components of the world's harvest of fishes, is distributed sporadically in the temperate zone on a global scale. Mitochondrial DNA variation in 95 pilchards from nine worldwide localities in five current systems was examined using ten restriction enzymes. Although several opinions have been proposed on the global population structure of the genus Sardinops, our results clearly rejected the hypothesis of gene flow among geographically distant populations on a global scale. Results indicate that the Japanese pilchards and the Australian and South African pilchards were derived from the eastern Pacific populations, following the speciation of Sardinops in the Pacific, after the formation of the Isthmus of Panama. An intermixing of the northeastern and southeastern Pacific populations during the Pleistocene glacial maxima is suggested from their genetic affinities.

Notes: The Hf-added FeRuGaSi alloy film has an amorphous structure in the as-deposited state and becomes nanocrystalline after annealing. Due to this structure change from crystalline to amorphous by the addition of Hf, soft magnetic degradation of the film deposited on the slant grooved substrate, which is necessary for the sophisticated embedded thin film (ETF) head structure, is greatly suppressed and the undesirable film stress is relieved. The FeRuGaSi-Hf alloy film has higher resistivity and permeability at high frequencies than those of sendust film, and the read/write characteristics of this alloy film show better performance than sendust film. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The polarization dependence of the excitonic transition in ZnSe-Zn0.8Cd0.2Se superlattices was studied by low-field electroreflection spectroscopy. A new peak observed in the lower energy side of the n=2 heavy-hole exciton E2hh at room temperature is attributed to the forbidden transition in zero field from the n=2 heavy-hole state to the n=1 electron state. This reflection change is found to be polarization dependent. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The temperature dependence of reflectance and transmittance of a thin (2 μm) CdS film prepared by laser ablation was investigated. The measurements were performed with the 514.5 nm line of an argon laser in the range 180–350 K. It occurred that due to locally enhanced absorption at the film/substrate interface, the transmitted light was considerably weaker than would be theoretically expected for a homogeneous layer. The reflectance, however, followed the theory based on Urbach's rule. The interfacial enhancement of the absorption was confirmed by luminescence investigations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  Alkalophilic Bacillus sp. KSM-K16 produced three alkaline proteases, as detected by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). The major protease, designated M protease, was recently purified to homogeneity and its properties were characterized. In the present study, two minor proteases, designated H protease and N protease, were purified to homogeneity from cultures of this organism. H protease had a molecular mass of 28 kDa, as estimated by sodium dodecyl sulfate/PAGE (SDS-PAGE) and its maximum activity against casein was observed at pH 11.0 and at 55°C. N protease consisted of two polypeptide chains with molecular masses of 12.5 kDa and 14.5 kDa, as estimated by SDS-PAGE, although it migrated as a single protein band during non-denaturing PAGE. Its maximum activity was observed at pH 11.0 and at 60°C. The amino-terminal sequences of H protease and of the 14.5-kDa polypeptide of N protease were identical to that of M protease. The electrophoretic relationship between the three enzymes was examined after they had been stored at different pH values and at 5°C. M protease was converted to H protease more rapidly at pH 11 than at pH 8 or below, and H protease was converted to M protease at pH 8 or below but not at pH 11. N protease appeared to be the autolytic product of the M and H proteases.

Notes: Abstract.  A femtosecond frequency-domain interferometer is applied to metal-free and vanadyl phthalocyanine (H2Pc and VOPc) thin films to measure time-resolved difference phase and transmission spectra simultaneously. For both samples, the phase-change dynamics is different from the transmission-change dynamics at 620 nm, reflecting that the phthalocyanines (Pc) cannot be modeled with a two-level system but by a multi-level or inhomogeneously broadened system, in which each level pair exhibits different relaxation dynamics. Because of this dynamical difference, a phase-change measurement is required to correct distortion of the transient spectra due to induced phase modulation of probe pulses. Near zero time delay, the phase and transmission changes show different growth behavior. This behavior is explained by antisymmetric amplitude and phase gratings which are produced by coherent coupling between frequency-chirped pump and probe pulses.

Notes: Abstract The static fracture toughness of a series of eutectic Al-Si casting alloy with different microstructural features has been evaluated. The dominant influence of eutectic silicon in controlling the fracture toughness is thus clarified. The relationship between the fracture toughness and the microstructure was established. Fracture toughness was found to be strongly associated with the size and morphology of silicon particles. The other feature which greatly influences the fracture toughness is the ratio (λ/DE)Si, i.e. the silicon particle spacing divided by the equivalent particle diameter, rather than the silicon particle spacing, λSi. Fracture toughness also correlates well with the void growth parameter, VGP (=σy (λ/DE)Si), proposed by the authors. The results of the present work can be used to develop an understanding of the variation of fracture toughness with the microstructural features of eutectic Al-Si alloys.

Notes: Abstract The spin relaxation timeT 1 for short-lived beta emitters13O and23Mg implanted in Pt have been measured for the first time;T 1T13O) = 2.90 ±0.65 Ks andT 1 T(23Mg) = 1665 ±140 Ks. The Knight shift for13O in Pt was measured at 300 K to beK(13O) = +(4.23 ±0.14) × 10−3. In the case of13O, the Knight shift is unusually large and the relaxation time is unusually fast compared with other interstitial impurities in Pt. A KKR band-structure calculation reproduces the present large Knight shift fairly well.
