Notes: Abstract A new CGH (computer generated hologram) common path interferometer, which can be used for testing an aspherical mirror with large aperture, is proposed. This interferometer does not have a circle of least confusion, and a spatial filter can be used effectively to stop extraneous lights so that interferograms with good contrast can be obtained. The phase shifting technique can be easily applied to the interferometer. The method of designing and making the CGH zone-plate is described.

Notes: Abstract A simulator to aid in the design of nonlinear image processing filters is developed. This simulator assists the filter design by determining parameters manually by trial-and-error. The method is also useful for improving the results of the learning optimization methods. An example of the application of the technique to improve a resultant filter by a learning method of a mathematical morphological filter is shown.

Notes: Abstract Chemicals releasing oviposition by an Asclepiadaceae feeder,Ideopsis similis, were identified from a host plant,Tylophora tanakae. A strong positive response was evoked by a methanolic extract of the plant, which proved to contain multiple stimulants. A mixture of two phenanthroindolizidine alkaloids, (+)-isotylocrebrine and (−)-7-demethyltylophorine, isolated from organic fractions, elicited significant ovipositional responses from females.

Notes: Abstract The importance of the North Pacific Intermediate Water as a sink for the anthropogenic carbon dioxide has been examined by mapping chemical and radiochemical properties at two isopycnal surfaces of σθ of 26.6 ad 27.2 obtained in 1970's. Its radiocarbon contents in 1980's were determined for comparison. The isopleths of depth and salinity at the two isopycnal surfaces obviously show that the intermediate layer of the entire mid-latitudes of the North Pacific is occupied by a similar water mass. The distributions of dissolved oxygen contents and Si/N ratios in the intermediate water indicate its source in the northwestern North Pacific and its sink in the eastern Pacific. The Δ14C values clearly designate the intrusion of the artificial radiocarbon of mostly 1960's origin into the upper intermediate water of the western North Pacific having its maximum in the subarctic zone of 40–45°N and 160–180°E in 1973. The maximum region for tritium is much broader extending to the north. These suggest that the subboreal region is active in the gas exchange and/or the warm water residing for a long time at the surface and flowing into the region across the subarctic front sinks quickly in winter. At the lower isopycnal surface, the increase Δ14C value for 14±4 years was around 27‰, which is smaller than that expected from the total carbonate increase, indicating an active isopycnal mixing.

Notes: Abstract The skeletal contents of insulin-like growth factor-2 (IGF-II), insulin-like growth factor binding protein-5 (IGFBP-5), and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) were determined in duplicate samples of human femoral cortical bone obtained from 64 subjects (44 males and 20 females) between the ages of 20 and 64 years. The results of these quantitative measurements revealed an age-related decrease in the femoral cortical content of IGFBP-5 (r=-0.272, P=0.031) in the total population. Although the femoral cortical content of IGF-II did not show a similar decrease with age, it could be correlated to the femoral cortical content of IGFBP-5 (r=0.442, P〈0.001). In constrast, the femoral cortical content of IGFBP-3 did not decrease with age and could not be correlated to the femoral cortical contents of either IGFBP-5 or IGF-II. Comparisons of these results with previous measurements of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), in extracts of the same bones, showed significant cross-correlations between the femoral cortical contents of each of these growth factors and the femoral cortical contents of IGFBP-5 (r=0.625 for IGF-I versus IGFBP-5, r=0.554 for TGF-β versus IGFBP-5, P〈0.001 for each) but not IGFBP-3. Together, these data indicate average net losses of 60% and 29% of the femoral cortical contents of IGF-I and IGFBP-5, respectively, and apparent net losses (i.e., nonsignificant decreases) of 21% and 25% of the femoral cortical contents of IGF-II and TGF-β, respectively, between the third and the sixth decades (i.e., decreases from young adult values of 75.1 pmol/g of bone for IGF-I, 124.7 pmol/g of bone for IGF-II, 0.71 pmol/g of bone for TGF-β, 115.6 pmol/g of bone for IGFBP-5, and 26.2 pmol/g of bone for IGFBP-3).

Notes: Abstract Uranium and thorium contents of solar salts were measured by neutron activation analysis. In advance of neutron irradiation, U and Th were concentrated and separated from some interfering elements by neutralization in which they were precipitated with aluminium hydroxide from solutions obtained by dissolving the salts in water or dilute nitric acid solution. The uranium and thorium concentrations determined were from several hundred ppt to 10 ppb. It was strongly indicated that uranium tends to remain in the solution (brine from seawater) phase in the process of solar salt production while thorium tends to transfer to the solid (solar salt) phase.

Notes: Abstract A new technique to measure the radius of a concave mirror is proposed, in which the radius is calculated from the difference of the two interferograms obtained before and after shifting the sample perpendicular to or along the optical axis. By comparison of these two shifting directions, it is shown that since the amount of shift can be measured accurately and the result is insensitive to the tilt during the shifting, better accuracy can be obtained by shifting the sample along the optical axis.

Notes: Abstract Sieve tubes play important roles in the transfer of nutrients as well as signals. Hundreds of proteins were found in pure phloem sap collected from rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Kantou) plants through the cut ends of insect stylets. These proteins may be involved in nutrient transfer and signal transduction. To characterize the nature of these proteins, the partial amino-acid sequence of a 13kDa protein, named RPP13-1, that was abundant in the pure phloem sap was determined. A cDNA clone of 687 bp, containing an open reading frame of 122 amino acids, was isolated using corresponding oligonucleotides as a probe. The deduced amino-acid sequence was very similar to that of the ubiquitous thiol redox protein, thioredoxin. The consensus sequences of thioredoxins are highly conserved. No putative signal peptide was identified. Antiserum against wheat thioredoxin h cross-reacted with RPP13-1 in the phloem sap of rice plants. RPP131 produced in Escherichia coli was reactive to antiserum against wheat thioredoxin h. Both E. coli-produced RPP13-1 and the phloem sap proteins catalyzed the reduction of the disulfide bonds of insulin in the presence of dithiothreitol. These results indicate that an active thioredoxin is a major protein translocating in rice sieve tubes.

Notes: Abstract The surface of a microspherical structure formed in the aqueous suspension of thermal heterocomplex molecules made by heating aspartic acid and proline can adsorb basic amino acids such as histidine, lysine and arginine. It can also adsorb adenine, cytosine, adenosine and cytidine. Electrostatic interactions acting between those monomers to be adsorbed and the adsorbing surface are responsible for the adsorption.

Notes: Abstract We have cloned a mousewee1 kinase cDNA (mwee1). The clone is 2258 bp in length and its open reading frame corresponds to 646 amino acid residues. The molecular weight of this kinase is 87 kDa in SDS-PAGE, which is about 1.7-fold larger than the human p50 wee1 kinase reported previously. In a cell cycle, the mousewee1 kinase is phosphorylated at M-phase, and anin vitro study using a mitotic extract revealed that phosphorylation occurs in the N-terminal domain, which is absent from the humanwee1 kinase, resulting in inactivation of the kinase activity. The N-terminal domain or entire molecule is extensively phosphorylated bycdc2-cyclin B kinase. Furthermore, the activity of thewee1 kinase was reduced by phosphorylation with the mitotic extract which containedcdc2-cyclin B kinase
