This paper introduces a high-speed, multizone, infrared absorption spectrometer for use in tracer gas ventilation experiments. This new instrument provides opportunities for experimental ventilation research that were hitherto not possible. In order to investigate ventilation phenomena with fine temporal resolution, instrumentation capable of high-speed tracer gas concentration measurements is required. The instrument presented here uses infrared absorption to measure concentrations of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) which is seeded into the enclosure under study. The apparatus takes simultaneous, continuous concentration measurements from three sampling locations. Each air sample chamber has a flush time constant of 7 s based on a 16 l/min sample flow rate. The accuracy of a relative concentration measurement is better than 1.0%, while absolute measurements are accurate to 5.0%. The resolution of the instrument is 0.06 ppmV of SF6. Results showing detection of high-speed ventilation phenomena and multipoint simultaneous sampling are presented, and sample calculations of ventilation parameters are included to illustrate the overall utility of the instrument.
