Notes: Abstract In a series of ozone-sonde soundings at the Hohenpeißenberg observatory, starting in 1967, the most striking features are increases of \sim2.2% per year in all tropospheric heights up to 8 km during the past 24 years. These facts have recently been published and discussed by several authors. In this paper, we present some evidence for the increase of tropospheric ozone concentrations during the past 50 years 1940–1990 in the territory of the northern edge of the Bavarian Alps, including the Hohenpeißenberg data. In December 1940 and August 1942, probably the first exact wet-chemical vertical soundings of ozone up to 9 km height were made by an aircraft in the region mentioned. These results were published in the earlier literature. We have converted the results of the flights on 4 days in December 1940 and on 6 days in August 1942 to modern units and have compared them with the Hohenpeißenberg ozone-sonde data of the December and August months. We also compared the data at the ground with the August results of Paris-Montsouris 1886-1898. Our results show an increase of ozone concentration at all tropospheric heights in Upper Bavaria during the past 50 years, compared with the Montsouris data in August during the past 105 years. In the recently published papers, the increases since 1967 were approximated linearly. Our results, extended to the past, show non-linear trends, with steeper increases since 1975-1979. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed. Quite recently (in case of the December months since 1986/87, the August months since 1990), the ozone mixing ratios at and above Hohenpeißenberg seem to have decreased.

Notes: The exotoxin pertussis toxin (PT) produced by virulent Bordetella pertussis bacteria is regarded as the main virulence factor of the organism and held responsible for most of its pathological effects. Identification of functional sites on PT would greatly facilitate site-specific detoxification and thus also the development of a new vaccine. For the investigation of structure-function aspects of PT we have prepared and characterized eleven monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) (UB-A1, UB-A2, UB-A10, UB-B7, UB-B12, UB-D4, UB-D7, UB-D10, UB-F7, UB-G1, and UB-G12) directed at the native toxin. Only UB-B12 and UB-D10 recognized PT in Western blotting indicating that most of the mAbs were directed against conformational epitopes. The mAbs were assayed for their ability to interfere with the binding of PT in model receptor systems like a solid phase binding assay using fetuin as receptor moiety, hemagglutination of chymotrypsin-sensitized goose erythrocytes, and the PT-mediated induction of the clustered growth pattern (CGP) of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Five of the eleven mAbs (UB-A1, UB-A2, UB-B7, UB-B12, and UB-D7) interfered with the binding of PT to fetuin on solid phase and with PT-mediated hemagglutination. UB-A2, UB-B7, and UB-B12 also inhibited the induction of the clustered growth pattern of CHO-cells. This indicates that the determinants recognized by these mAbs are associated with the formation of the carbohydrate recognition sites of PT. Thus, the monoclonal antibodies described in this study will be valuable tools in the further analysis of the structure-function relationship of pertussis toxin with respect to receptor recognition and binding.

Notes: Analytical and numerical calculations of threshold behavior and electro-optical characteristics in twisted chiral nematic layers are presented, when weak anchoring in the tilt and twist angle of the director is assumed. An analytical expression for the effective twist angle and the Fréedericksz threshold voltage is derived. In cells with bistabilities, we investigate the influence of the anchoring parameters and device parameters on the width of the hysteresis. Using the 4×4-matrix formalism of Berreman [J. Opt. Soc. Am. 62, 502 (1972)], we demonstrate the influence of the weak anchoring on the transmission-versus-voltage characteristic.

Notes: The alloy system Six(SnyC1−y)1−x was investigated. The purpose is to form material with reduced strain at silicon heterojunctions. In this work, samples were prepared by coimplantation of tin and carbon ions into silicon wafers within the dosage range 1015–1016 cm−2, followed by rapid thermal annealing. Rutherford backscattering and channeling, Auger sputter profiling, and secondary-ion-mass spectrometry were employed to study the crystallinity, chemical composition, and depth profiles. A near-perfect crystallinity for 0.5 at. % of tin and carbon was achieved. For high-dose implanted samples, tin segregation was observed. This work demonstrates promising features of group-IV semiconductor synthesis by ion implantation.

Notes: The surface chemistry of GaAs-oxide removal with an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) hydrogen plasma has been investigated with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is found that As oxide is efficiently removed at room temperature, and heating expedites the removal of Ga oxide. Band bending changes during ECR hydrogen-plasma oxide reduction are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The effects of added poly(vinylbutyral) (PVB) and oxidized Menhaden fish oil (O-FO) on dilute suspensions of Al2O3 in the azeotropic solvent mixture 73/27 Wt.-% trichloroethylene/ethanol were studied by static (SLS) and dynamic light-scattering (DLS). The DLS correlation function consisted of four terms from: 1) interdiffusion of the two solvents, 2) diffusion of Al2O3, 3) diffusion of added O-FO and/or PVB, and 4) an induced velocity of particles through the scattering volume due to “laser pressure.” The amplitude and relaxation time of all terms could be determined. Addition of PVB to the Al2O3 suspension resulted in an increase in particle size corresponding to the adsorption of a monolayer of coils. Addition of O-FO to the Al2O3 suspension did not produce a significant increase in particle size, indicating either no adsorption or a compact conformation of O-FO molecules on the Al2O3 surface.

Notes: Abstract A numerical calculation of particle trajectories for a recently proposed triple-slit experiment has been performed by starting from the Einstein-de Broglie picture of wave-particle duality. The nonrelativistic quantum potential due to the sum of three quantum waves superimposing in space and time gives rise to an interference-like distribution of particle arrivals on a second screen that is not predicted to exist in the usual (“Copenhagen”) interpretation of quantum theory.

Notes: Abstract We investigate an extension of the Standard Model with a second Higgs doublet, showing a two stage phase transition. Wash-out of a baryon asymmetry after the phase transition can be easily avoided in this class of models.B+L transitions are more strongly suppressed in the intermediate phase than in the high temperature symmetric phase, however. Therefore, it becomes more difficult if not impossible to generate a sufficient baryon asymmetry during the phase transition.
